  • Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common birth defect of the heart (congenital heart disease).
There is a communication between the pulmonary artery which carries blood to the lungs and the aorta which carries blood to the rest of the body in fetal life.
This communication known as ductus arteriosus, closes soon after birth. If it remains patent beyond a few days after birth, it is called patent ductus arteriosus or PDA in short.
