  • North Queensland Native Stingless Bees - Removing Old Pollen You see many bees collect and store A LOT of pollen. You ever wonder " does pollen go off, or decompose". Whell pollen is a protein source, they put it in pots to ferment with bacteria to make peptides and amino acids so they can feed to the young and adults alike. Like all food it can get too old, decompose and go off, even rot. Bees will remove pollen past its useby date, and normally you dont see it as its part of al the waste that leaves each day. Here is a great example of the old pollen being removed, and dumped right outside the hive.

I wonder if they also remove pollen because it's been infected with mites etc

Yep, remember its protein after all, and it can be removed for all sorts of reasons. Its off, infected, its has dried out, and yes it can be full of pests, like mites as well.

How does their honey taste compared to honey bees?

Honey taste is more complex, sweet with a citris'lactic tang to it.
