North Queensland Native Stingless Bees - Disappearing Roosting Males
North Queensland Native Stingless Bees - Disappearing Roosting Males Normally a mating swarm will last a few days, with males roosting overnight outside the hive. BUT not always. Here is an example of roosting males being attacked and killed off by ants as they roost. So no more males.

North Queensland Native Stingless Bees - Removing Old Pollen You see many bees collect and store A LOT of pollen. You ever wonder " does pollen go off, or decompose". Whell pollen is a protein source, they put it in pots to ferment with bacteria to make peptides and amino acids so they can feed to the young and adults alike. Like all food it can get too old, decompose and go off, even rot. Bees...

Thanks heaps for this video. Our #1 hive got wiped out by Phorid fly, and our #2 hive was strong but I noticed after relocating it onto an aluminium trestle a line a small ants coming up to it. Have put pavers down under each leg and extremely carefully dabbed some insecticide right at the bottom of each leg so that only anything that climbs the bottom inch touches it, and hoping thats enough to repel ant attack. Do you observe any other symptoms of the bees or the entrance or the smell if ants are mounting a big attack? Cheers =) David

Makes me wonder if the entrance holes are too big? Just the military in me wants to make the hole smaller so its easier to defend. Im only new to this hobby. Ive just put 3 your traps (Bottles with Water / Honey / Vinegar an placed them strategically so the flies have to come past them before hitting the Hive. Can take the boy out of military, just cant take the military out of the boy I guess......

    • @grahamsanders9970

Logic says to make the entrance hole smaller, BUT remember it also allows air into the hive so it can breath. Too small a engtrance will kill the hive.

Graham, thank you. I've noted these bastards on a bit of tape that fell off about 1 month after I harvested some honey! Noted a couple sort of walking in and out. I opened the hive at dusk and I got covered and bitten badly by a lot of my bees. Basically shoved it back on and taped it up. Do you think I need to do anything more? My hive is pretty strong.

Thanks Graham, great video. I never saw a phorid fly until one of my hives was attacked by a swarm that lasted for days. A few days into the swarming, the phorid flies bombarded the hive, wasn't hard for them to get in as it was weakened. I set up a trap inside the hive also, which caught the lions share of the flies. Good tip with the tape, makes sense. So, I would suggest that anyone that has a hive being attacked by a swarm, keep an eye out for phorid flies.

Hi Graham, very informative as with all your videos. Love all of your videos. I have Tetragonula carbonaria in Redcliffe QLD. I rescued them from my mum’s place a few months back. Their home was an old decaying log. When I brought them to my place, we found there were still a lot of bees near the old log. I mustn’t have gotten all the brood or the queen. I then made another box/hive and managed to get all of the remaining bees and brood into it. Now we have a small hive at my mum’s and I I have 1 at my place. Just wondering if the smaller hive doesn’t do well can I bring it to my place and connect it to my stronger hive to boost it ? As I’ve seen you do this with hives you have done.
