I was hoping for 80 or 91, but April 78 is an inspired choice. The 30 Trips 78 show from May and the 2 Dave's picks from April 78 are perfect representations of the steps away from the pristine clean 77 sound the band was moving away from. Can't wait to listen. Thanks Dave.

As much as I love the 70s don't get me wrong, I've got plenty. Would like to see some releases from years that you haven't touched yet ie: 86,88,89,91.😉😁✌
I love this release, late 77 thru fal 78', Wolf, fat distortion, emphatic singing by Jerry, love it. I saw 4 shows Spring 78', later in the tour in May, Dartmouth, UVM, RPI and Springfield and they were all fantastic shows. I've had many of these Betty Boards for years, but a few shows I don't know, Tampa, Pembroke Pine and the 1st Fox show, so I'm excited for something new and then re-listening to the rest on 11!! is gonna be fun. Thanks Dave and Rhino.
The box set is so good! And Huntington is one of my favorite shows EVER. I'm glad you finally released it. But please come through on the "stand alone" version for RSD some day. Yes, the show is that good! And Huntington could use a release like this ... I think the city would actually celebrate it. :-)

My friend asked me one time what is your 3 favorite years In order ? I always said '77 '78 '79, they were really at the peak of their playing during those 3 years and are my absolute favorite years along with '83 '84 '85 even though those years dont get any love !!!!! 💀⚡
This has been repeated a few times by Dave L over the years: those October 1974 tapes were cut up and destroyed to make the Grateful Dead movie. Those closing shows have been preserved and released to the maximum extent possible with the release of the 5 CD "Grateful Dead Movie" soundtrack. There is nothing else to release from those 5 nights of shows -- and further, the recordings that were made had weird dynamics and mixing anyway (check out the 5 cd soundtrack and you can hear it). David L mentioned all of the work that went into fixing those mixes for the 5 CD release because of the awful recording/mixing that was done. So to be clear, there are no October 1974/five nights at Winterland to release. Lastly, I think Dave L did the best he could releasing that May 1974 Reno show in the Mars Hotel 50th set. I don't think there is a lot more 1974 really worthy of release.
I love the Grateful Dead, however, unfortunately I don't have $200 to spend on 19 cd's. The principles of mastering are beyond me, but thank you sincerely to the tapers making aLL of this music free.
Last year’s box set wouldn’t play in my CD player. First time ever!!! Hopefully this one will work in my player. I own everything, and I still haven’t heard last year’s box set. Fingers crossed.
I'm not really sure I agree with others about 1978. To me, 1978 is a year where you hear everything starting to fall apart -- due to drugs, relationships, etc. Big shows -- like Egypt -- proved to be a let down. Vocals are rough at times -- listen to the US Blues just posted with Weir screaming and Jerry's voice breaking consistently. I think 1978 gets heralded because of the recording quality; which are amazing Betty boards no doubt. I remember trading tapes and being so stoked on the sound quality of these shows and the "With Love from Egypt" shows. But in hindsight, the shows just don't do it for me. The setlists (to me) get boring and bland and the playing -- in particular Keith's huge drop off -- is not as much fun. It also doesn't help that Keith switches up pianos, equipment, etc. But this run is really hit or miss; thus, to quote Dave previously, where the band would drive to the cliff and sometimes simply drive off the cliff. I think you hear all of that here and they drove off the cliff A LOT at these shoes. I'm not sure I would listen to this box very much; as I barely listen to Red Rocks 78 and the Closing of Winterland. Stoked for others though.
I have to agree, Garcia's increasing (Hard) drug use hit the Creativity, the Joy and the Essence of why the earlier stuff hit so hard. Oh Jerry, ride the dragon, don't chase it.

When they came back in 1976, there was a freshness to their approach -- they were extremely well rehearsed and their vocals and playing was phenomenal. It is the perfect mix of what folks love about 1977 and 1974. But to me, 1978 is hard because you hear how it has all fallen apart two years later. What is wild is that I actually find the January 1979 shows to be better -- with much more nuanced and finer playing -- then anything in 1978.

My first show was the Sportatorium 4-7-78. It was my first show so it was fun, but I've had trouble listening to it since then. Jerry seems really off, just not playing. Maybe my memory is off.
Donna gets a bad rap cuz of the Playing in the Band shrieking, but she really added a lot to the sound otherwise. Gimme the Donna/Keith era all day long.
This is a ridiculous choice. One of the most pristine SBD’s in existence comes from this show. One of my favorite shows ever, but why would you choose this show when you can’t/ shouldn’t remaster it any better?

I dont care for the illustrations that are shown...not incredible at all. Just becasue an artist is "hot" doesnt mean it fits with your tribe.

I have GD exhaustion. Dave, please pivot and circle back to reintroducing vinyl sets of classic shows that got gobbled up by road trips or box sets. Tuscaloosa 77 or Louisville 74, etc. I’d even auto-purchase a special re-release of Veneta 72. Or 40 trips. But, Scranton 71? No thanks. April 78? How do we get an April 78 set before Fall 79? I’m afraid it’s because Fall 79 was in road trips? No matter - all love and appreciation. Just sharing my reaction.
Daves Picks 51 is the first let down -- full miss -- I have heard. Only the third disc -- 4/12/71 in Pittsburg -- is listenable and frankly it isn't that special. The Scranton show has awful recorded vocals -- such that the playing simply cannot overcome it. It also isn't the most dynamic/exploratory jamming the Dead ever did. I will also admit that as soon as I get a Dave's Pick and I see who recorded it I usually know it isn't going to be very dynamic or good. Not to be mean, but Kidd and Rex simply were not Betty or Owsley. Therefore, while I'm not a huge fan of 1978, I understand why this would be released as a box set: these are Betty boards and thus are well recorded and sound great. I think the recording quality in parts of 1970, 1971 and 1979 - 1986 make it hard to dive into those years and commit to a box set.
It's weird, to me, that they use FOMO marketing, and only selling collectors' editions, instead of having everything that been published, available on demand. Now, for vinyl, you can't do that, because of how logistics works in the vinyl industry. But for a CD release... if LiveNation could do it on the same night as the show...
I could listen to Dave talk about the Dead for hours. And this box really does sound like a winner....
