When is it OK to get a bigger container?

  • The thing that has changed my home more than anything else has been accepting the reality of the space that I have. I call it "The Container Concept." Declutter until stuff fits easily within the natural boundaries of my home.
    Then answer isn't to get a bigger container, but that doesn't mean I can NEVER get a bigger container. In this video, I'm talking about how to know when it's okay to get a bigger container and how to choose the new container.

    I have found that decluttering makes for many empty containers. It is amazing to me how many containers I have that are empty. As I go, for now the empty containers are in the garage until I know what containers I need and will use in the end. You have really have helped me. Your take it there now and not pulling it all out is a game changer for me. When I watch other people and they say pull everything out, I cringe.

    I find myself thinking of the drawer as the container and the cutlery insert as the organizer. In your book you are very clear that decluttering and organizing are different things. So I find myself thinking the container didn’t change, the organizing tool changed. Or maybe the container in the new house was bigger than the old house so the organizing tool needed to be bigger. Not that it makes a difference for I do so love the ways you have helped me wrap my brain around thinking about stuff. Thank you.

    This made total sense to me! In this case, a bigger container was warranted, not to hold more stuff, but to be able to see the stuff you already have and make it easier to access. Which can also help you declutter! Very cool how that worked out! Thanks for making this video (and every video you make)! 😊💖

    The "live with it for a while" is a very good concept, I had some utensils that when I purchased I regretted at first because they weren't what I was used to using. The older ones were more narrow, lighter but kept bending at the stem whereas the newer ones were more solid, heavier but as I found over time didn't bend when using so they actually became my favorite ones to use.

    🤣 I love your disclaimers. My husband and I are both crickets so we do line up our silverware but when you were talking about how it might drive people like me crazy that you don't I was thinking "I can live with that but I could not open a package and just start putting atuff in it". It a great reminder that videos I watch are edited and I shouldn't assume that I know the whole story. Truly though I really love your honest and real life approach in your videos and your books. I think the one thing you've said that has had the biggest impact on me is the idea of "If I needed this would I even remember that I had one". It has helped me let go of so many things that I was keeping just in case because truthfully if I needed them I wouldn't remember that I had them at all.

    My container that is too small is my whole kitchen. I feel like I have too much stuff because some of it lives in the office (neatly on a baker’s rack), but if I lived in an home with more than two lower cabinets, I wouldn’t feel like keeping a food processor that I do use a least a few times a month is too much. There is only so much decluttering I can do and still be a person who cooks actual meals. (And bakes as a hobby.)

    • @Saforra99
      @Saforra99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely a tricky thing! We've decided to store some things that we don't use very often up in the attic, labeled + easily accessible, so that helps make our day-to-day space more functional. But we were also able to add a lot of shelving on one wall to be most of our food + pot storage.
      And definitely, prioritizing things you actually use! If that means that the office maybe can't hold as many things (because it has to be kitchen overflow), that is okay too :)

    • @mrsducky3428
      @mrsducky3428 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! Small kitchens are an issue! One of the things we had to do when we moved in here was to put the refrigerator in the dining room, because it wouldn't fit in the kitchen! (They are divided by a wall) so in the refrigerator spot, we added a thrifted lower cabinet & a bookshelf perpendicular to each other. Worked for many years!
      That's been replaced by a rolling cart with a stainless counter top, which can be pulled out, houses all the appliances, like the food processor & vac seal unit, use the appliances on that counter top then put the appliance back on the shelf, & push back into place. Can wheel it to the sink, or into the dining room, wherever I need it to go! And, we even added a power strip to the cart, so multiple appliances can be used at the same time, and just plug the power strip cord into whatever nearest socket!
      It's a total game changer!

    Love the advice, puppies, & comments at the end. I was so focused on your advice and how I would apply it to my home that I didn't even notice that you were wearing your pajama pants. Good choice to leave it in because we are all real. That's what we love about you.

    I loved this video! I don't need things to go the same way or neatly either. Thanks

    I also like to swap containers, when I feel like my needs are changing. Oftentimes it happens for me with hobbies. When I indulge into a new one (or spent more time than usual with an old one) and I need to store more supplies I pair down hobby items that I spend less time with and swap their spaces.

    I LOVE containers! 😁 They are so CUTE, efficient, beneficial, affordable. Containers are like puppies, i've never seen one i don't like. 😉
    Guess you could call me a container hoarder!
    I have waaaay more containers than inventory to put in them.

    I love your dogs. Also, great info on the topic of when and if to get another container. I’m a container kinda girl. As I declutter so many containers are set free. Interesting paradox.

      But, now, I am using up the containers that I freed with stuff that had no containers. The container system mostly works in my home. But, this is a farm, so space is not the problem - putting it where I want it is the problem 🙂 Sometimes, ends up in the workshop building or huge barn - but getting much better and I am now motivated to climb the ladder - almost 80 and disabled to get down all of the containers and shipping boxes that I have saved and organized and donate a lot of it. Yes, I save shipping boxes because they are specific to the item that you might have to ship back some day UGH! Yes, I have had to pay for boxes and internal organizers to ship some things back for repairs.

    I recently decluttered my discolored flatware and substituted another set I already had. I love the look of your bamboo Do-Lolly but for me I still cant justify the price!

    It’s interesting that your new container, was actually less roomy than your old one, even though it looks bigger. The advantage is that it spaces your utensils out for easier grabbing. Love the dog! Love your response! 😂 Perfect timing.

    You are changing lives here. Seriously. The concepts arent hard but they are not the way people like us usually think. We need the container limit method explained to us.
    I have SO MUCH STUFF. It's a burden. I am about to do some serious cleaning and decluttering. I want to feel happy andnlight and know it isnt earth shattering if i get rid of something and realize i actually need it and rebuy something.
    My downfall was we moved from a house we lived in for 17 yrs. My kids grew up there. I didnt realize how hard that was going to be. Leaving that rental. Yes we rented the same house ALLLLLLL 17 yrs until we bought our home. We then bought a 1974 time capsule and had to renovate EVERYTHING. Our stuff was in totes and boxes for almost a yr. I didnt even have a kitchen for over 10 months. I had a big white room with a fridge. No sink, no counters, no stove or cooktop. During that time i gradually bought more kitchen stuff for my kitchen as it was constructed. The end result is extreme clutter and double everything. I am even now 6 yrs later, trying to declutter. Ive been thinking and realized the ONLY things i want to keep from the old kitchen at our old house is my cookie sheets. Ive baked cookies every year since my kids were little on them and i live them. I have fancy new ones and i use those for everyday use but for cookies i revert to the old ones. They just work better. Im going to really declutrer that kitchen because it really makes me crazy because it has too much stuff i never use. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.
    You are literally making our lives better. Thank you so much.

    Yes! 🤣 As a cricket it was driving me nuts that all of them where not tidy and that you didn't COUNT them all to make sure you had the same amount of everything.

      That's funny. I figured she had a wad of them & it would probably be enough for her family. 😄 But now that I think about it, I counted mine to make sure I have a complete "set".
