Make sure they stay tight after every outing. Use locktight is a must. Mine got loose and broke of 4 studs and I need to get a new hub or drill them out or make new holes all together now. But no drill press.
I did have to drill out at least one broken bolt. A good set of drill bits and some left handed drill bits make easy work of it. I don't have a drill press either. Just go slow and methodical about it.
I see a tap in the future being inserted into that hub . The previous owner probably meant to do the same or something else is abound . The bolts were finger tightened via socket & extension for another day . May have to go up a size bolt ? That is if the hub will permit clearance. To be continued .....
Well, once I took of the hub itself, sure enough, there was a snapped of bolt. It was really easy to remove with some heat and left-handed drill bits. All the threads are clean. I've already tested out some new bolts and they fit/thread perfectly. Guess I dodged a bullet on that one.
Glad to hear it , jeep projects are work enough but rewarding . You ought to know . Also glad those left handed bits work for someone , never had too much luck but then again , I live in the northeast .
I have the same hubs. When I remove the allen bolts, the selector plate does not just come off. Feels like a spring is holding it back. And the total hub assembly won't come off either..???
Sorry so long in response. It there anyway that you still have it in 4WD? I can’t think of any reason why it won’t release unless it has bound up on the end of the axle shaft tooth. Email me at dellis6914@gmail.com and send pictures.
I don’t think so. May not be correct, but the Dana 30 axle shafts have a different length for the 6 and 5 bolt hubs. Plus, they might have a different spline number. The 6 bolt was for the narrow tracks and I can’t remember what year they changed over to the wide track 5 bolt hub. But I may be wrong…
Standard? I am swapping Warn Hubs for the factory covers that have no lock/unlock feature. Yep, locking Hubs were an option. Yep, 43 years later my CJ5 will get what it always wanted.
Thanks for that. It really does seem that 81-82 was when they changed a ton of stuff. B-column on the tub, went to wide track axles, dana 300 from dana 20, 3 point seat belts, high back seats. Must have been utter chaos.
U dnt have to assume.i can tell you..theyr a pain in the butt.. Last guy didnt service every 30k. Hae 2 stripped hex heads. Not drilling too good.those little bolts are super hard steel
I can respect that, but my push is that a lot of the CJ7 audience has never done anything like this before, so I try to provide as much detail as possible to help them figure things out. It works for some and not for others. Kind of like the intro theme song. :) Some love it, others hate it.
@@coolguy_CJ7 love the video - I’m just trying to watch as many as I can as I’m rebuilding my CJ7 and just need to get to the information parts. Thank you for making them though!

@@coolguy_CJ7thanks 🤦🤦🤦no wonder my dad passed down an left handed drill bit set 😂😂😂😂.
Uhh I'm so yunnng
Mine have a flat washer then a lock washer on all 6 with cap nuts.
Whatever helps them to stay on, I suppose. Sometimes with these CJs you need to go little overkill.

@@coolguy_CJ7 apparently I just wasn't pulling hard enough. Probably hasn't been apart in a long time.
can you swap the 6 bolt hubs onto the 5 bolt hub axles?

Well that's cool. I'd love to see what they look like.
1980 was the last year for the 6 bolt!

Sounds like you're having fun. :)
Try and find a left handed set of drill bits. It will make it a lot easier.
Great video but holy cow do you talk a lot about non-essential stuff. Please just get to it.

Don't get me wrong. I totally appreciate the feedback. My wife says the same thing. :)
