  • Warn was the supplier of all the manual locking hubs for the CJ5/7/8. This restoration is for the Premium Warn 9062 model which was the dealer upgrade to the traditional Warn hub. I removed these from my 1979 CJ7 Golden Eagle trim with the narrow track axle.

    If by chance you cannot find a gasket, you can make your own very easy. Go to NAPA and buy some gasket material. Just cut a piece off and lay it where the gasket goes. Hold the material in place take a hammer and lightly strike the gasket material till you start to see the material starts to show the shape of the hub. Do this all around, Once you have the shape or impression just cut it out. You have to do the same thing on the inner and outer sides of the hub. When I was a young buckaroo I used to use Telephone Books front and back covers to make gaskets.

    Just looked at Warn website, they have rebuild kits for these (yay!). There is a chart to look up your particular truck/jeep. The rebuild kit for the CJ is about $40, depending on where you get it.

    I just serviced the driver side wheel bearing and hub on my CJ5. Whoever was the last guy that did it either owns the grease company or flatout does not know it does not need the entire barrel of grease.
    A quick search for the gasket(s) for the Warn hub brought up Amazon!!
    To fill letters like you want to do I just lightly rattle can the letters. Once the paint flashes (drys) I tightly wrap a rag or paper towel around my finger (chose your finger) and wet my finger with lacquer thinner. Then it is just a matter of brushing my finger over top to wipe away the over spray of the part. The lettering remains painted. Sometimes I mask recessed areas, such as the recess where your fingers go into to turn the hub "switch."
    Once you try this trick you will become hooked on the technique. I use the trick for raised letters also. I will polish the entire part or lable or whatever it is, light paint the entire part and let it flash a bit. Then I use my finger with a rag soaked/wetted in lacquer thinner and carefully lightly brush my finger over the raised letters. Then I usually squirt some clear over the entire part or label or tag or whatever it is and let it flash until totally dry to seal the work.
    The result is better than AMAZING!

      Love this build. Thank you for the "better way". It's awesome that we get to share knowledge and experience which results in a better, nicer looking restoration for us all :)

      @@coolguy_CJ7 I have many many tricks to share. So far I have seen how the steering column is assembled, and how the fuel/temperature is diagnosed from you. In fact, your channel is the one I look to first for clues and mostly get answers!!
      Keep the good work.

    Good video, looks like a good project to do on mine. I did a quick search on the torque for those screws. Stainless steel #10 coarse thread is 22 inch/Lbs, fine thread is 31.7 in/Lbs. Did you ever find the gasket? It looks like the Warn Premium hub are still made and look the same. I will call or email Warn before I do mine and see if they are the same. Cheers!

      I did. If you call Warn, like you're doing, they should have a set that they will happily send you.

    What’s up cool guy. I am doing a rebuild on a 78 CJ5. I. Have the Bates version hub. Can those be replaced by the newer hubs you have?

    • @coolguy_CJ7
      @coolguy_CJ7  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely. As long as the spline count of the hub matches the spline for the stub axle, you should have no problem. For a 78, your hub should be the 6 bolt wheel hub.

    Did you find a matching grey paint for the hub body assembly? if so, what brand and color code. Thanks much

    • @coolguy_CJ7
      @coolguy_CJ7  ปีที่แล้ว

      I went with the Rustoleum Satin metallic Aluminum color.

    Anyone know where to find the bolts to attach this to the hub? They are m10 x 1.5 x 35 but the head is much smaller than normal. Can't find em anywhere.

      Are you looking for the cap bolts? The small black ones with the Allen head? You can get them at Lowe’s or HD in the specialty drawers.

    I have the Btes hubs on my 1978 CJ5 rebuild. Can they be easily changed out with the newer version hubs like are in the video?

    • @coolguy_CJ7
      @coolguy_CJ7  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can. But it depends on what you want to achieve. The Bates hubs are pretty good from what I hear. The WARN are better, but I don’t have any verification on quality or strength improvements.

    SUPER rookie question... how can you tell its a 9062? I recently bought a 75 cj5, and took these off today and it looks similar, but its definitely locked up.

      WARN was the only company that AMC used for their hub lockers in the 70s and 80s. There are many other brands that work or fit like Mile Marker, but WARN was the only brand that came on CJs. Plus the dana 30 stub axle has a 27 spline shaft. If you go to WARN's website (www.warn.com/premium-locking-hub-9062) you will see this exact hub.

      After some digging, joining the Jeep forum and posting pictures, i found out the one I have is the model m-195. I was able to disassemble it more and found a washer behind the turning portion completely rusted to the retaining ring. Now I’m trying to track down a square o ring, and a new washer. This video is so helpful though and thank you for the assistance!
