    can I just say as cis woman I had a hysterectomy and I am so glad I did! I had the full one with everything removed and it was a good choice for me. I was nervous and recovery was tough for the first 2 weeks but not having a severe cycle with health complications anymore is a huge benefit to me.

      +Stoner Jesus I believe that if a cis woman gets a full hysterectomy, she will need to take oestrogen fo the rest of her life. I think it would be dangerous to not have any hormone replacement therapy. I may be wrong, I'm curious to see Cathy's answer.

      yes I am on estrogen but NO not for the REST of my life. I will take it until about age 50 then wean off with my dr's help and then i will skip menopause completely just like the other women in my family have already done with no issues. then at that point there is no estrogen needed at all just like a post menopausal woman

    That's good that you covered the myths to such an extent, but...I'd have really liked to hear more about the procedure itself, what it feels like and how it heals, ect, instead ^^, No harm meant, what you said was still very important! Just...yeah, from a practical point of view, I'd have liked more field knowledge.

    I want to get a hysterectomy so badly. I've had a Pap test and a pelvic exam, even though I'm only 19, because of the birth control option I decided to get and I felt like shit afterward. It made me so dysphoric. Also, the idea of being able to get pregnant is just repulsive to me. I'm so paranoid about getting pregnant that I double or triple up on the protection when I have sex with my cis male partner. Unfortunately I need to be at least 1 year on T to get it (so Aug 4 2018) but I also have university and have to take summer courses for the next two years so that leaves no time to get it. I'll probably get both top surgery and a hysto after I get my degree but the wait is so stressful.

    • @loverboyn-n-SoupBrain
      @loverboyn-n-SoupBrain 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ik this is old but its dumb you had to wait because you can get atrophy of the uterus that can cause infection and kill you buck angel talks about it and they symptoms of t long term because of the lack of estrogen your uterus no longer functions properly

  • @eoghanmcl7497
    @eoghanmcl7497 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I had my blood hormones checked at about 3 months on T and something was wrong with them, they later found a cancerous mass on ones of my ovaries and auxiliary tumours in that area, now 9 months on T and had the tumours removed but not everything else down there (which was meant to be happening ) because I started having a bad reaction to the anathetic so monthly check ups for a year and every six months after that.
    As my mum pionted out to me, being trans kind of saved my life as I wouldn't have noticed until later at which piont the tumours may have grown or spread elsewhere in my body so I am very lucky. I would recommend as chase said if u dont plan get exams etc. get a hysterectomy so there isnt any chance you will go through what I've been through in the last 6 months as it was very painful and frightening and I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy

    Thanks for the useful information. I'm one of those people who actually does experience a lot of dysphoria related to having a uterus (and I always have done), and for me, hysterectomy (preferably also including vaginectomy) is more important than top surgery. Not only does every pap smear feel like a medieval torture session, but I tend to get a lot of infections that require invasive exams to determine what kind of infection(s) I have, and every single time I have to get an exam for that, it's incredibly traumatic and extremely physically painful. I have a lot of dysphoria relating to having a uterus and a vagina, and the older I get, the worse both the dysphoria and the physical pain of a pelvic exam get, and the dysphoria is probably making the physical pain worse as well. I'm just getting started on the process of my medical transition because my health insurance only just started covering it in the last few weeks, but I am both nervous and excited to finally be able to do what I've been wanting to do for so long.

    Thanks for this, Chase! I actually literally had my hysto today. It was great to see a video about it today. Personally for me I did it because of endometriosis and extremely painful period cramps, which did not stop with T (even if though my period itself stopped). So that's another reason I would add there! Thanks so much for the video again.

    Have you ever checked into polycystic ovarian syndrome? I have a huge pile of information about pcos and Trans men, up to 75% Trans men *could* have pcos because it more of an an endocrine issue than a gender thing... it's really interesting to dig into it. You do NOT need a hysto because you go on testosterone! Doctors do not know!!! I had a hysto because of pcos, and felt a HUGE difference in my mental and physical health 😊 (partly because there's no way I can bleed now!) To me, it was the best thing I ever did for myself, but it was a LONG journey to get where I am today. I can't get top surgery because of a sloo of financial problems, but bless all those who can get what they want, when they want, and are happy with what they blow uave, and for those who haven't, please don't give up! There are alternatives to your situation and you can feel comfortable in your own skin! 😉

      OMG I know 3 years had passed but I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and I'm looking forward to transition and there's NO INFO about it anywhere. Do u know where can I find info about it? Also will starting T complicate the situation more? Would I need a hysterectomy just to be safe?

    • @pmbluemoon
      @pmbluemoon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peckgardner There isn't much out there on transgender and PCOS, I've compiled what I know by reading up on PCOS sites, and then looking up a site called the www.hystersisters.com. I'm not a doctor, just a very curious person so I would suggest looking up anything you can on PCOS and trans vlogs like this one
      helloclue.com/articles/cycle-a-z/what's-it-like-to-have-pcos-when-you're-trans
      There's a lot of threads about it, but not much for scientific research as of now, just personal experiences and blogs/vlogs. Every body is unique as well, so something might work for one person, but not for the other.
      There are a few abstracts that are fairly inconclusive as well, but still have a good bit of info on the subject.
      www.endocrine-abstracts.org/ea/0041/ea0041ep682
      I hope you can find the answer that suits your preferences the best way you want to for your journey. My best wishes, do your research where you can find it! ✌👍

    UGH. I neeeeed that so badly in my life. My doc REFUSES to prescribe T without an annual PAP test and I cry for like an hour after each time, first one she was alarmed and asked if I had been raped before kind of bad. I'm hoping to get enough saved up that within a year I can either get started on top surgery or the hysto combo.

    Great video Chase! I live in California and, thankfully, did not need to have any surgeries to have my legal name and gender marker changed. I just provided the court with a letter from my diagnosing therapist and treating endocrinologist. But I do know that there are other states right here in the US that require these surgeries to change your legal documents. The more I think about it the more I'm not ok with it.
    So I have a question, does anyone else see this as a form of forced sterilization?

    My mum had a hysterectomy after severe firbroids because the doctor claimed that keeping the ovaries would make them cancerous though tbh she hates pap smears.

  • @jaceleo1843
    @jaceleo1843 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, you don't need to get a hysterectomy, but in the end you will probably NEED to get a hysterectomy. As a transman on testosterone for 20 years, I never wanted to get a hysto because I hated having to undergo any type of surgery although I did have top surgery. But as the years went by, the uterine pain and cramping progressively worsened; no treatment helped. In the end, after 18 years of T, a hysto was the only option to treat the unbearable pain.
    If you never have uterine pain or cramping then you will not need to get a hysto, but still will need to get gyo check up each year; but if or when the cramping and pain comes, a hysto will be the only option. Don't put yourself through useless pain and suffering like I did.

    It's super bad, and I know it's super bad, but I've only ever had a pap smear and pelvic exam once by my mother's coercion and it was a really really threatening experience (I was like? Eight? Nine?). I completely blacked out and I only really remember the whole trauma leading up to the event and just the thought of having to get another exam has caused me to have panic attacks. It's super Not Good. I'd honestly just love to have a full hysterectomy soon as I am able, to get rid of the risk and the need altogether.

    • @mockingjay478

      WTH?! Kids that young don't need it, and that's basically pretty close to medical/sexual assault to have that forced on you, whether coersion or flat out force.
      Please, consider talking it out with a psychologist (not a counsellor or whatever, but an actual psychologist) who is understanding of trans issues. It's really important to work through because these tests are vital. They should always be your choice. But they pick up some really important stuff, and as Chase said, if you can't handle the testing, it's worth considering getting an oopherectomy + full hysterectomy. Parts that aren't there can't turn cancerous.
      I say this as a trans guy who is really overdue for one because I just can't trust anyone down there right now.

    Pap smears aren't that bad! I am almost 2yrs on T and I got mine done when 23. My doctor wasn't going to force me to get one (never been with a man, no fingers NOTHING). And she just suggested one to make sure there were no mutated cells either preexisting or caused my T for whatever reason. It's rare but it's best get it done. My doctor used the smallest tools possible for me and made sure I was comfortable which I was. Of course the pap itself feels weird and uncomfortable.. but it's over as quick as it started. The most uncomfortable thing for me was the pelvic exam.. finger in was more uncomfortable that the tool for insertion.. just make sure you have a nice doctor who will use what you want to make you comfortable and not painful.

    • @sadfaery
      @sadfaery 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      wendigo For some people, you're right, it's not a big deal, but for others, it depends on your level of dysphoria and other factors like the size and shape of your anatomy, because even using the smallest tools possible, I still feel like I'm being ripped apart every single time I have a pap smear, which is not helped by the fact that I don't ever voluntarily insert anything in there and apparently I am more narrow than usual to begin with. It might not be a traumatic experience for some people, but it most definitely is for others.

    • @Evan-xk3db
      @Evan-xk3db 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sadfaery yes understandable, I went into this with a lot of dysphoria and was googling countless things. So many horror stories around how horrible it is and painful etc.. so I was trying to avoid this because of how much negativity was around it. When I left the office it was more of a "better safe than sorry" mentality and I went alone.. I had no one there for me for comfort. So I do understand the dysphoria and fear. The most traumatic thing for me was the fingering. It felt more uncomfortable than the tool itself for me.. my doctor used one that is for small children who end up putting toys in themselves. Of course she told me if she couldn't see anything would have to go bigger (I would of just backed out if that was the case). It's true more narrow folk have a harder time :/ but I thought it would be good to speak on a positive experience more so than all the horrible ones. We need have physicals done.. but that being said I'm looking into getting a total hysterectomy because I don't want it to become a ritual thing.

    I heard that if you do get a hysterectomy you have to take testosterone for the rest of your life because you can't produce hormones naturally is this true?

  • @shawnchurch2641
    @shawnchurch2641 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So here's what I don't understand. For a FTM trans individual, having this procedure done can be considered something to celebrate. However, to the vast majority of the population that isn't trans, if any "cis" woman who has to undergo such a procedure it's considered a tragedy. The same thing goes as far as breast removal. One group says that this is good while one says that it is bad. One group says that having these parts is bad while the other doesn't. It's just something to think about.
    BTW, before anyone says, "Oh a cis person talking about trans topics." I'm not actually cis or trans. I'm not nonbinary, gender neutral or agender. I don't identify with gender at all. I don't use gender labels or tags. I'm genetically male but I don't identify with it. It's just an aspect of my physical being, no different than my eye color, hair color or blood type.

    • @wewantyourblo0d
      @wewantyourblo0d 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm not sure where your confusion lies. You're talking about two very different types of people - cis *women* and trans *men*. I'm not going to speak for all trans men, but many feel they weren't meant to have those parts in the first place, while cis women do, and therefore it is a tragedy to lose them when it is involuntary.

    • @shawnchurch2641
      @shawnchurch2641 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the fundamental problem. If you're genetically male or female then you are supposed to have certain parts. Male and female are defined by their role in reproduction. Males are supposed to have XY chromosome, a penis, testicles and a certain testosterone level. Females are supposed to have XX chromosomes, a vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and a certain estrogen level. That's how they've evolved for the purposes of reproduction. Male and female is not a mental concept, it's a fact of biology. If you want to identify as or with a different gender then you absolutely have that right. However, when it comes to biological matters surrounding male and female, don't try to claim things that just aren't true.

    • @wewantyourblo0d
      @wewantyourblo0d 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You didn't make any of these arguments in your original comment, which is why I was confused lol.

    • @shawnchurch2641
      @shawnchurch2641 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's another problem. Male and female biology and anatomy are pretty basic, common sense concepts that are taught in high school. Nobody should have to explain to another grown adult how these things work.

    • @wewantyourblo0d
      @wewantyourblo0d 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think you're misunderstanding. It seemed from your first comment that you were confused as to why transgender men often celebrate a surgery that cis women find tragic. This question could come from myriad perspectives. Your second comment was all about biology vs gender identity, and it wasn't evident in your first comment that that was the position you were coming from. I was just trying to clarify what you said had trouble understanding.

    So you mentioned PCOS; I was diagnosed with it when I was like, twelve, and it does produce a lot of testosterone (in my case, at least). I always struggled with having a beard, I took the Pill so I could fit in with all the girls. But now, I'm glad I got this much testosterone and I don't need to inject it or something. I still want to do HRT, because if I get the female parts inside of me removed, they will also kinda remove the part that produces testosterone and that scares me, kinda.

    • @uppercaseCHASE1
      @uppercaseCHASE1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Yes. Almost all bottom surgeons require you to have a hysto 6 months before phalloplasty. The reason being that most people have a vaginectomy (removal of the hole). This way there is no way to do pap tests or pelvic exams. Some people do keep one ovary though BUT you have to get tested because you cannot get pelvic exams and ovarian cancer is scary.
      You can however, have phallo without a vaginectomy. I'm not 100% sure if the surgeons would require you to get a full, partial, or no hysto for that though. You'd have to ask your phallo surgeon.

    I have a question.. When you get Phaloplasty everything's closed down there, right? So there's no way to get Pap tests and all that. Is Hysterectomy required in order to have Phaloplasty performed?

I’m agender, he him specific pronouns and all the lovely jazz❤️ and I want one cause just the thought and like knowing....about menstrual cycles or chances of pregnancy makes me so.....uncomfortable

    If trans guys that are on T and if they have a total hysterectomy does it mean that my quote on quote female natural hormone will disappear and that I will need to take said hormone to even out my hormones? because I know that the body does need a balance of both hormones

      @rilee5275 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Lucas When you start testosterone, you'll meet with a qualified doctor, most likely an endocrinologist. They will answer that question. However, I don't think you'll have to take estrogen as well as testosterone. Transmasculine people who have gotten a hysterectomy don't have to take estrogen as well as testosterone.

      I think mean the hpv shot? It protects against Cervical cancer. Unfortunately, garadasil only protects against 9 different strains of hpv, so the shot doesn't protect against all strains of hpv (some of which can lead to cancer). So the shot definitely lowers your risk, but it doesn't eliminate the risk totally. Also, don't smoke, that increases the risk too. Edit for clarity:(Garadsil is one of the brand names for the HPV shot, and none of the hpv shots protect against all strains of hpv, there are 40+ different strains of HPV that are sexually transmitted.)

      Alex Lucas Like me, you've probably had an HPV vaccination which protects you from a few particular strains of HPV which most commonly leads to cervical cancer. You are in no way immune to any type of cancer. Just mostly from a virus that can lead to a cancer.
      Please educate yourself about what you put into your body and it's implications.

    Hey Chase, thanks a lot for sharing this info. I’ve been on T for almost 2 years and am going for a consult for a total hysterectomy with an oophorectomy. I have lately started having pain in my abdomen that feels similar to period cramps, but I haven’t had a period in at least 2 years. I figure it’s my body saying something needs to be done and I’ve heard other trans men have experienced this as well. Do you know if this is a very common thing?

    I want to have a hysterectomy, and donate it either to my MTF trans friend, if we're compatible of course. I mean, I don't need it or want it, and that's something she needs to be herself. That's kinda my reason why I want everything removed from me.

    Hey Chase ! What is the number of time you should get a pap and pelvic exam in one year ? I'm planning to take T and do top-surgery but I'm freaking out at the idea of an hysterectomy, so I'm interested in knowing that to prepare everything in advance, even though I'm still 23.

    Chase, what happens when a trans guy gets a full hysterectomy and is on hrt? Will his t levels stay the same or would they increase due to there no longer being estrogen?

    hey chase do you know anything about post menopause ? and when we get a hysterectomy we lack estrogen in our bodies to maintain our bone structure that means we most likely to get osteoporosis after hysterectomy. that's why i don't want to get hysto as long as i can to protect my bones but i don't know if that's ideal to do so

    I have a question. What happens to your hormones after a hysterectomy? Theres a lot of confusion about it online.. Do you HAVE to be on T or something that gives hormones to your body after having a hysterectomy?

      The Concert Experience they go all over the place lol I had a total hysterectomy in late dec of last year and it sent me directly into menopause. I was about ten months on testosterone when I had it done and now I'm nearly two years and I have about 20 hot flashes a day. you're also dependent on testosterone after your hysterectomy because your body no longer has hormones in it. but on the positive side my body will adjust to what's going on and I no longer have to worry about exams or having a period or having any sort of cramps. also your body stops the battle of testosterone and estrogen because your estrogen is no longer there. so you need less testosterone after your hysterectomy. pretty cool

      Yes, unless something goes terribly wrong. The recommendation is to wait about at least 2 months after the surgery so it's fully healed though. The actual vagina isn't removed during the surgery, only the reproductive organs further up.

      Sneauxphlaque q pap smear is a yearly test done by a doctor. They do a pelvic exam and take a swab on the cervix and send to the lab to make sure you don't have any abnormal cell growth (cancer) test for stds, cysts, and overall health.

      The recommendations on when to get your first pap, and how often, depends on which country you live in. The recommended age in the U.S.A. is 21. I would ask your doctor, because they might recommend something different depending on your risk factors.
