How to change radiator (coolant) hoses on a Ford Model A -plus shout out to

  • Quick, easy way to change the radiator (coolant) hoses on a 1928, 1929, 1930, or 1931 Ford Model A. For coolant, I use whatever antifreeze is on sale at O'Reilly's. I either buy full strength and mix it 50/50 with distilled water, or I buy the premixed 50/50 antifreeze and use it straight.

    I'd use the hot water method to soften the hoses otherwise I'd have to wait 11 months for the next sunny day in Yorkshire, seems to be permanent liquid sunshine recently!

    I don’t own a Model A. My current recipient of spare time is a 1966 Land Rover Series 2A. That being said, I’m very much enjoying your channel. I’ve always liked the Model A for its classic design and simplicity. My Grandparents first car was a 29. In many ways the simplicity of the old Land Rover is very similar to the Model A. If you own a car that makes you smile, it’s worth its weight in trips to the therapist. Lol

    I just had an issue with my modern 2005 F250 with a water leak. I first thought it was the reservoir burping out again and it turned out the top hose's clamp was loose. Whew, that was a relief, after having the thermostat changed out, someone forgot to tighten up the clamp. Anyways some more great advice, thanks Paul, have a Blessed weekend and Happy Fathers Day!

    As my grip strength wains I find it advantageous to use more tools. I use a pair of channel lock pliers to grab the hose at the attachment point and rotate it slightly to break it free. Of course if you have gorilla grip hands that I lack...pliers may be optional.
    I use the ABC's to look at rubber items.
    A: abrasions abnormal
    B: bruises bulges
    C: cuts cracks cords
    When in doubt, toss it out!

    Hey I have to ask. Isn’t walking around your shop barefoot dangerous. My dad had a workshop he loved to work on anything mechanical. If I or my sisters came into his shop without shoes on our feet he’d chase us out because of it being a safety issue. Just curious. Thanks for your videos. I’m quite the 🪭 even though I don’t own a Model A.

      I'm mostly American Indian and have mild autism. No shoes is pretty normal for me. Haven't been injured once this way. I did get a broken foot once at work, and I had steel toe work boots on when it happened, so if we go strictly by facts, I have ONLY been injured when I wore shoes, never without them.

    Hi Paul, do you have any guidance for door adjustment on a '31 roadster? I can't seem to find much out there for the roadsters. The doors take a significantly more pull to close than what I see on other cars.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Roadsters are all metal and can be bent. We tweaked on Roadie's doors for about half a day to get them to close so nice. This is one of those times you need someone who has had a body off a frame before to help. You may need to shim the cowl or body, of maybe just tweak on some metal. Ask around your club for someone with experience. You need eyes on it to do this.

    • @SgfGustafsson
      @SgfGustafsson 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ModelA Thank you! The lower hinges are worn out, probably from people using the door to lift themselves into the seat. I can get it to line up nice but the lock mechanism takes way to much force to click in to the catch.

    I have a dumb question. I have a 33 ford and the radiator hoses are very dry and one of these days, they will go off. I looked under the radiator for a petcock drain and I don’t see one there however. On the sides of my engine block there are petcock drain on both sides. Is that where I drain my coolant for a flathead V8? Thank you 😊

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not a V8 expert, but I believe so. The V8 has two lower hoses (two water pumps also) and I believe those are where you drain.

    I watch almost every video you make, and I agree with 99.99% of the things you do and the tips you offer, but I think you just demonstrated one of the 0.01% things I don't agree with.
    No doubt that the original radiator hose clamps, used in Model As, almost a hundred years ago, can be approved upon, but using worm clamps is a big step backwards. These "constant diameter" worm clamps are not designed to be used on radiator hoses, where they are exposed to many extremely wide temperature cycles. If you put them on the hose while cool, they will loosen up as the car warms up and the clamps expands, and if you tighten them while hot, they will stress the cast iron and steel fittings (especially at the lower inlet of the radiator) and may even cut into the hoses as they shrink. They will certainly shorten the life of your hoses.
    If you want to upgrade Henry's old clamps and insist on using worm gear types, at least use a "constant tension" style worm gear clamp that is spring loaded to deal with the expansion/contraction issue. Even better though, would be a spring-loaded T-bolt clamp that is also constant tension and has no sharp edges or perforations. But I think the best clamp (and easiest to use) of all would be a wide band, constant tension, spring clamp. Spring clamps large enough to fit Model A hoses are difficult to find, but there are companies that sell them (e.g. Belmetric Fasteners). Almost every auto manufacturer in the world uses them as OEM equipment on the radiators of new cars for a reason.
    Keep the videos coming, Paul. You and Tina are rock stars among the Model A community, and I learn so much from you both. Thank you.
