So about Scotland's sexy attack | Squidge Rugby

  • Go back a few months, and Scotland's attack was so sexy FHM were having serious meetings about whether an attack pattern could be considered "a woman". However, when faced with the mediocre might of Wales, Scotland seized to a halt. So, what made Scotland so hot in the first place, and why were they so lukewarm? Squidge Rugby looks to get to the heart of just that...

    You asked for ideas... it might be interesting to look at various plays that certain teams have developed and brought into the game - the reasons why etc and how those innovations have moved game on. I.e. choke tackle, cross field kick, disruption of the touchdown (try), blocking/holding. Very good keep it up!

    Watched this and the Murray video, liked both and have subscribed. I find the rapid pace captions a bit funny. But when you're actually pointing out stuff in the clip (example, number of defenders vs attackers) it gets a bit annoying having to pause the clip every 1.52 seconds (that's right I made a reference!). So yeah, might get tired of all that pausing. Overall though, good effort.

    NIce one Squidge. It has been many a long year with nothing to smile about in Scottish rugby. I watched a lot of rugby in the 80s when we were half decent for a short spell. Great point about Hogg making blockers out of his team mates.

  • @Formakiwi
    @Formakiwi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Scotland were foolish to dump Cotter so quickly; the improvement under his stewardship was a major turnaround, and Townsend's elevation after just two years coaching at the Pro 14 level smacked of political preference. Their sparkling variety on attack and ruggedness in defence only became possible because of Cotter's emphasis on skills and conditioning, backed up by Scott Johnson at the SRU, which pushed the clubs to drastically improve those areas of the game. With Cotter bumped in favour of Townsend and Johnson now heading back to Australia, it remains to be seen whether the national side or the clubs can continue to build on those improvements, or whether we're likely to see a reversion to more traditional Scottish standard of football.

    There are similarities with how Scarlets play. Though Scotland fell down away from home when their high risk style without the crowd support backfired badly. Scarlets seem to have the edge in this respect with away victories vs Munster and Leinster last season and Bath this. Leinster thrashed them with a superb display recently. They were never at the races so can't blame their style.

    • @boobiedu
      @boobiedu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom-Henry Jones They went into the England game as underdogs and there were no real expectations for them to win they always play better when that sort of pressure is off of them (in the autumn their worst game was against Samoa and although they still won it wasn't as convincing as the AB or aus g game). It also helped they had the whole of Murrayfield behind them the whole time against England but crowds don't score tries so there's maybe no substance to that argument

    • @tom-henryjones2868
      @tom-henryjones2868 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kapes ox Yeah true, I believe home advantage is the key in the 6N, rarely see a team win a Grand Slam with 3 away games (England 2016 an exception). Also what are your views on the abuse of Eddie got this week

    • @boobiedu
      @boobiedu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom-Henry Jones I though it was pretty disgraceful tbh definitely ruined a great weekend when I saw it, there’s just no need. I’ll never claim to be a fan of the guy but no one deserves that. If it turns out they were rugby fans i’d like to see some sort of ban from SRU. unfortunately as rugby gets more popular up here i’m scared it’ll attract more of a football crowd i mean there’s already people trying to start Mexican waves during games. I’m probably being too cynical or maybe it’s my inner old man but it’s a bit annoying when your trying to keep up with what’s going on.

    people don't seem to realize that Townsend has had both his Glasgow team AND his Scotland team given to him on a plate!
    Sean Lineen spent years and years building the Glasgow warriors culture, then built up the team from young talent with the occasional Fijian for flare, lol they made the play offs before Townsend even got there!
    then Cotter AGAIN! spent a couple years building the squad, took them through a world cup... only to be thrown to the curb for being successful!!
    im not saying Townsend isnt a good coach! but hes only ever coached someone else's team! he left Glasgow fine.. but they were starting to go down hill right before he left. the new coach has had to almost rebuild the squad after Townsend baby sat them for years

    • @llamaofvinter5801
      @llamaofvinter5801 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is some weapons grade bollocks right here.
      Firstly, he brought through plenty players, players who would be key in what Glasgow were trying to do. He brought Jonny Gray, the best Scottish lock on the roster from the academy and gave him all those starts from age 16, signed Leone Nakarawa, the truly world class talent Glasgow successfully signed and utilised to full potential, and developed him into a player that Racing wanted to buy out of contract and did.
      He managed Hogg, who developed an ego after his Lions stint. Toonie benched him, brought him back for Zebre where he scored two tries in the first half and Toonie brought him off because he didn't like his attitude, where Hoggy didn't play another game until next season. I mean do you even understand the magnitude of the events that took place, the risks Townsend took in order to check what was the star man for Glasgow and Scotland, who is now thriving and far more controlled and mature for the lessons learned during that stint. It would have been easy to let him go unchecked, risk him going downhill, becoming another prima donna who pissed their talent away and develop a reputation that was not good. But he didn't, he risked losing Hogg to other teams, alienating him potentially, the star man of club and country, and consigned him to sit and think about what he was becoming.
      The decisions alone there changed Hogg's career. No doubt about it. Imagine Scotland with a Hogg who refused to play, or thought he was better than he is, put himself before the team, underestimated people by overestimating himself? Townsend displayed some world class player management in how he handled that situation, because it would've been easy to take a backseat and not act.
      He also won the league and don't give me this "other coach's team" bullshit. He's achieved more with the teams his predecessors assembled than they ever did. Lineen never won a title, Glasgow made two playoffs but never looked ready to actually win anything and the gradual rise was no guarantee he would've got the team there. Townsend had them scoring more points than anyone else in the league the next season, losing to Leinster in the semi by 2 points. 2 seasons later they did what no Scottish team has ever done and won the title but the season before it, we were again playing like true contenders, making the first final ever, the season after that, we looked like champions, ready to come of age and under Toonie they did it. He took the team to another level, as he has done with Scotland.
      Townsend has changed a great many things in the way Scotland play. What has happened? Higher 6N finish than Cotter ever managed, beat Australia in their own backyard using Greig Tonks from 15, then again at Murrayfield by a record margin of victory, again without Stuart Hogg, that's two results that Cotter failed to win in the two attempts he had at it with arguably stronger squads, twice with Hogg.
      Came 5 points away from beating New Zealand (if not for Kieran Read's illegal slapping of the ball on the tryline, it likely would've been a victory), achieved far better Autumn and Summer test results than Cotter ever did, using squads ravaged by injuries (Darryl Marfo anyone? Brought in from Irish to Edinburgh, didn't do much for Edinburgh, reveals Scottish qualified, selected bizarrely and Townsend has him packing down vs best team in the world, not ideal, yet he actually looked good, what is that if not inspired but also making do with what you have), and beat England, something of greater value than most rugby matches, especially in this Scots' lifetime. I don't doubt Cotter was a great coach and he did what we needed him to do, but relative to him, Townsend has us playing far more exciting rugby, and achieving far more results with the way the team plays.And he's not even a year into the job. That's the kicker. Townsend gets results and he gets them quick. You don't need to take a dogshit team from rags to riches in order to be considered a good coach if you're taking solid foundations and making them even better. He spent 5 years at Glasgow as well, so it wasn't a "pop in", "use and abuse the squad" before fucking off elsewhere. No he stayed, he grew that team, recruited, improved for long enough to warrant taking charge and look how that's gone. Strength to strength.
      And Dave Rennie or "the new coach" since you're such a clued in fan who knows so much about all this, has barely had to change anything at Glasgow. He's added a lot, but he's got a much larger budget because Townsend got Glasgow in the European knockout stages for the first time in the club's history I might add, which is a sizeable bump in budget, and because the new league setup with the South African money massively increased how much they had to play with. But it's still largely the same players being used. Hell plenty have been reclaimed. Matawalu, Jackson, Grant, Van Der Merwe. Guys who left came back because they like the club so much, that's the impression they left with under Toonie.
      Glasgow was left in a good place for Rennie. It wasn't perfect but it's still a top team that narrowly missed playoffs but still made it to European knockouts. Hardly a step down from where his predecessor left it. The front row changed a lot but due to players choosing moving on not Toonie leaving them with nothing. The locks largely the same, hooker still strong, back row largely the same, 9 same, 10 same, centres same and back three the same. It's just had additional players added to increase the squad size, which is needed to compete in this era of the league and Europe. But that's something Toonie could never afford to do when he had control. Glasgow has the means to do it now. Rennie should be driving the team even further with all the stuff he has to play around with. I think he has taken Glasgow at a similar level to Townsend, if slightly improved through his emphasis on fitness which has been a real difference maker, but Toonie and Rennie are similar coaches. They worked together down at the Chiefs so they're familiar and they play very similarly.
      Talk about like Rennie's had a lot to do. He really hasn't because he and Toonie play similar brands of rugby so it's literally just making it his own with tweaks like the emphasis on fitness, using quite a lot of youth all over the squad, and replacing players who moved on or weren't re-signed because of any number of reasons, something Rennie was heavily consulted on, given he'd be coaching the team.
      TL;DR: STFU You couldn't be more wrong.

    Just watched this! Funnily Wales v Scotland this weekend near enough the same result! I'm sure Scotland see themselves as Wales equals but in reality (At the moment, it could all change)it's like a little brother who thinks he should have won all the things his big brother did was never really good enough even with his talents!
