The ad at the end of this video has a lovely violin playing. I wish I could find the music for this.

I really do like Slim Dusty! His music has a lot in common with American Country Music. I'd love to have a beer with Penguin, Daniel, and Lilly R, 'cause they could be my mates! ;-)

I related this tale to a yank while I was in Nth Qld - and he believed it!... I kid you not.

The song is very reminiscent of characters from American Tall Tales and Folklore
Like Paul Bunion, John Henry, and Davy Crockett
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tall_tale#American_tall_tale
some are obvious fantasy, others are exaggerations of real life figures

It just occurred to me: they can't play this song in Australia any more. Big John can't be "a killer with a gun;" no one knows what a gun is any more down there! Still a good song, though.

You can still own a gun in Australia it's just safer than the yank's laws.

One of the differences between AUS and the US is their origin.
The US was born in revolution by 13 individual colonies who formed independent States which feared too strong of a central government. That's why it took two tries before we arrived at a consensus on a central government, the Constitution of the United States. Even then there was distrust of a central government, so the first ten Amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, were adopted. The First Amendment guaranteed freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to peaceably assemble, and the right to petition Government to address grievances. The Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms, not for sport or hunting but to ensure the security of a free state. These were obviously the most important ones. It's my opinion that the Second protects the First, the other eight and the rest of the Constitution.
Australia was founded as an off-shore penal colony for Mother England. Only Guards and free colonists were allowed to have firearms. Gun control more or less has a longer history in Australia than in the US.
I live in a State (the Democratic Peoples Republic of Maryland) where I can own certain handguns and long rifles and shotguns but not others. I also do not meet the "good and substantial reason" to obtain a concealed carry license. The only people who can carry in the DPRM are active and retired Law Enforcement Officers, those with a documented threat against them, those with a perceived threat (judges, prosecutors, lawyers, politicians), those who routinely carry large sums of money or large quan of valuables, and criminals. Criminals are not supposed to carry any weapon, open or concealed, but being criminals they do as they damn well please. As your own Senator David Leyonhjelm said o
f Australia after the Lindt cafe deaths, we are a State of “disarmed victims”.

Lol, you placed a comment saying "Slim would've sung this song around 50 years ago!" and I told ya it was from the 70's since I bought 5 Slim Dusty albums recently in a 70's Slim Dusty collection. This album is one of them.
