Thank you for this video Callie ❤️ I'm an older rider, have ridden most of my life. Several years ago I developed osteoarthritis in both hips. Made it painful to ride (and other things too). It got so bad that I couldn't sit on my horse without terrible pain. My hip/iliopsoas and the whole pelvic region had became very tight & shortened. Finally I had both hips totally replaced and it took about a year to rehab. But!!! I can ride pain free now. However!!! It's a daily practice to work at range of motion, stretching my muscles and ligaments. Ongoing. I started doing yoga as soon as I was able during my physical therapy. I joined a wonderful online yoga/exercise program specifically for equestrians and it has changed my life, not just my riding life. I never thought I'd have rom again in my pelvis but I do. I have to work at it tho. I've signed up for your yoga class and I feel that I can always learn more and be better. I'm grateful you're offering the class. I'm very glad that nowadays there is a sharper focus on the importance of the riders body as it relates to success in the saddle and better communication with our equine partners.

I have a metal rod in my back from scoliosis surgery. I’ve had chronic pain for 12 years. I was diagnosed with MS in 2017, which has exacerbated my back pain. I’ve had to give up skiing, hiking, and some basic household chores that require repetitive bending and twisting. My balance is now an issue having MS. I just turned 51, and finally got my first horse 2.5 years ago. I haven’t ridden on any consistent basis for over 20 years. Some say I’m crazy to want to ride. While this could be true, I can confidently say, my horses provide emotional and mental therapy. They help me relax regardless of how bad of a day I’m having. I will be riding regularly this Spring regardless. I watch and save your videos and would love any advice on how you would proceed if you were me. I’m trying to find someone close who can help me. We live in a very small rural area with the closest trainer an hour away. A 30 day training course at his barn is 900 dollars. I’m on disability and only my husband is working. Thank you for all the videos you post. They actually help me a lot. Just wondering if you might have specific tips for someone with my issues. Thank you..

I am almost 75, so I have a range of pain daily from the various sports I have participated in. I find some of the yoga positions are just not doable due to arthritis in my hands and wrists, problems with my knees, a torn tendon in my right shoulder, etc., etc. A few years ago I started practicing Soma therapy which is combination of therapeutic yoga, Hanna Somatics and Hatha yoga. It is very slow (which helps me slow down - which is NOT easy), and the idea is to train your brain to release those muscles that have become habitually tight due to trauma. It has helped amazingly and I practice it every night. There are some yoga positions I can still do and your video reminded me of a couple that I can definitely include in my daily practice.

I have broken my right leg three times over the years, the last break (2012) was just below the knee.
I have had 3 different horses flip over backwards onto me, which has caused some injury to my right hip that has come back to haunt me.
I also has acute Polymyositis many years ago, which has left a muscle or two in my right leg permanently paralysed.
At the moment, my physio is riding my horse.
Thank you for sharing these three stretches/yoga poses; they will come in handy.

I have bad shoulder mobility and that brings some challenges to my riding. I have been doing Crossfit for 2 years now and its really helped my riding a lot. I'm lucky to have found a crossfit coach that used to be a rider herself so she understands what exercises are most important for my riding. We actually do a lot of down dog at crossfit. Sometimes we do down dog to a push up.

Also have diastasis recti from my child birth, working to close in the gap to have a stronger core. Now your suggestion of yoga will now be added to the list! Thanks again

Thank you for advocating for off horse fitness. So many riders don't do this. I have been riding for 8 years, started at 51. I started yoga 6 years ago and it helped with my stiff hips. I learned about the psoas muscle 2 years ago and learned how to use it which really helped with lower back soreness. Then a year ago I started a comprehensive exercise program for riders including yoga, core strength and fitness called dressage rider training and that made such a gigantic improvement in my riding that I am still amazed every time I get on. That along with good training from my instructor keeps my 21 year old horse sound. The rides we have now are just amazing!

Favorite pre-riding exercise - stretches from side to side, keeping my torso straight and just stretching hips and knees from side to side. On horse exercise - circling arms and crossing arms over neck of horse to touch toes on opposite side.

Hello Callie, thank you for another great video. I have a pinched nerve in my lower back (L3-L4) from a sports accident 5 years ago and comes with it, cronic inflammation. I have mostly gotten used to the pain and occasional sessions with the physio helps. I have renounced a back operation as I am afraid I will never be able to ride again, so its something I put up with and I am happy in that decision. I was really interested to see that you use Yoga to help supple up and have subscribed to Yoga for Riders. The postures you mention (downward dog, rag doll...) help to open up the hips and supple the lower back and pelvis area a lot and I am hopeful that working on my posture will help me and also my horse, who is very tolerant and patient when I get it wrong.

Catching fatigue before we start sitting cricket causing either sciatica, shoulder and or neck pain, can get so bad the fascia in the head can tighten making eyebrow lifting hard to do. So is there routines to break long posture holds so that fatigue does not get the best of us? Great video, actually watching to see how I could get back into riding.Blessings to the journey and good health for all

this is a very important step: body control and body awareness. I practice pilates & yoga as well as fitness. core training for riders helps to build muscles, earn more flexibiliy for tendons. Thanks to Pilates I could align my body and control it in a precise way, inner connections were built, really important is to know how your body works: you need to build up your muscles, all of them, especiallynthe little ones a long your spine.
But you should start doing these exercises with some instructor. There are a couple of basic rules to avoid injuries as well. My very problem are my feet and toes. I have to work on their flexibility and tonification.

I had a bad fall where I chipped my T4 vertebra. I still have days where my back hurts, especially into the hips. My chiro treats both me and my horse as usually if one of us is slightly off, the other is as well. I also get the shockwave therapy as that does wonders and really hits the spot. Fully agree on being active outside the saddle. I am not the fittest of people but I try to do cardio/pilates in the morning as I ride in the afternoons. I also do pole dancing twice a week as that has helped with core and really focusing on a strong back with flexible hips

My back rounds forward which pushes out my stomach. Had surgery way back in 1996 and developed bad happens from there. I have to work really hard to keep my shoulders away from my ears and pull my belly button in so that my back is not shaped like this. ). It really impacts me at the canter. I have had frozen shoulder on both shoulders so lifting them toward my ears is a constant struggle. Between the two issues I struggle to follow the movement of my horse.

My hips can hurt. I am 5'4" and ride a 16.3 OTTB who is nicely filled out. I am also 68 years old. I do pigeon pose, forward bend, squat pose, and lunges. I always do the squat right before I get on as it both opens your hips and lengthens your back at the same time. Also lunges. I do the other poses at home after riding. Yoga helps so much. Thanks for your videos and teachings.

Thank you for sharing what works for you! I already do pigeon pose, it has helped open and loosen my hips somewhat, I think! I actually have no idea if my hips are tight or flexible, I wish there was a test or something, haha. I have asked my instructor, but she isn't much for feedback like that, so I don't know. Thank you for listing the poses you do, I will try the squat pose for sure, my lower back hurts after riding a posting trot for any length of time and I have never had any previous back issues, so I want to deal with it as proactively as possible, thanks!

I feel you 😟 I also had some terribly painful problems with my hips, so I stucked for few minutes and literally can't move, so I won't feel paralizing pain if do so. It was happening in very differents moments, after end of the ride, while I was on mountain horse trip or the worst what happens still - when I just lay down on the floor and I can't normally get up. But fuck, I'm 19 and this though is paralizing me

I'm not able to ride much right now, so it's great to have things I can do to physically improve my riding, as opposed to just the mental things like reading and videos! My whole life I've had "heels down" screamed at me. It's only after an injury they discovered I have abnormally short Achilles. I've been doing yoga the last few years and it's helped so much! Any tips on poses/ mental imagery etc for terrible posture? I sit at a desk for 10 hours a night. I knew I had terrible posture on the ground, but it didn't affect my riding. Now I'm rounding all the time! 😣

They make those vest things that help with posture, maybe wearing one while you are at your desk would help? I hold terrible tension in my shoulders, (I am a super nervous, tense person) and tend to have them up by my ears, haha, I never realized how bad it was until I started riding and was made aware of it. I want one of those vests to wear around the house... As it is I have post-its all over my apartment reminding me to pull my shoulders down and back and to BREATHE, haha. My boyfriend thinks I have gone insane!😳 But it has helped, my posture is much better now on the horse but I still lose it sometimes while posting, I want to try one of the vests while riding too, to see if it helps! It couldn't hurt, anyway! Best of luck with everything!

great video and great news about yoga for riders sessions. I'm looking forward to it. I personally struggle with left side (left leg from hip joint to ankle) weakness and it's longterm ongoing problem. I wasn't aware of how much I compensate until I started riding. I cannot correctly rest my weight on the left side and it makes me very unbalanced and prevents control of the horse. for this struggle I do combination of yoga and pilates. on top of this, around 2 mo ago Ive had a back injury (bulging disc L5/S1) and I haven't been riding since then... I wonder how this gonna affect my riding. I hope it doesn't mean I can't ride a horse anymore.

Another very helpful video, thank you, Callie!
I have been trying to find exercises and yoga moves that help with riding, I currently do pigeon pose to open the hip? I hope it works for that, it really seems to loosen and open them...
I need to try things for relaxing the lower back- I find that after a lesson spent working on posting trot my lower back is often very sore, which is odd because I have never suffered from back problems or pain of any sort before starting to ride! Are there any specific poses for loosening/strengthening the lower back that have helped you, besides those that you mentioned in this video? I am signed up for the new course, I can't wait for it! Thank you so much, without your videos I would still be bouncing and sliding like a sack of potatoes, haha! I have an excellently credentialed instructor, but I think she is better at doing than explaining how to do, if that makes sense? So your clear and straightforward tips have been an absolute game changer for me, I wouldn't be where i am without them! You clarify and support what my instructor is trying to get through to me, I would really be much less aware of many important little things if not for your help! Now if you could just help me master sitting trot, haha!
    Thanks again for everything!

And as long as you put the video of the yoga poses and instructions on here, I will favorite it and even try to use it often. Very helpful! I'm very stiff in my hips and mostly my shoulders but can we please talk a out that horse! So responsive and relaxed, and he instantly flexed his neck when she brought her hand down! Someone's been doing yoga too I guess :)

My issue is I have a slightly shorter leg on one side, I have stiffness around my ankles also from plantar facilitus and I just lose my stirrups when I change from sitting trot to canter. I then end up clinging to the side of my horse and losing the motion altogether. Sorry along one

It’s the opposite for me I can ride whenever I want and I am very lucky for that but I don’t have a trainer. I am going to see one in August but I have to go to her and she wants to use one of her own horses.

I would love to know if you have an answer for me - the muscles on either side of my very lower back (coccyx area) really become tight after riding - I have a feeling it's due to my own tension / fear whilst riding, but was wondering if you have any solution. I do yoga after every ride and have many stretches that really help, but would like to know the root cause? many thanks

I have moderate scoliosis and kyphosis in my spine. I am physically unable to balance myself in the saddle the same way as everyone else. I find I have a very weak core and poor range of movement in my body.

Maybe try magnesium. I use epsom salt diluted in warm water and rub it into my legs.

Don't know what it is, propably of my great, sick-from-birth spine, but I can have sometimes big problems with my hips and lower back. In short, I used to have attacks of so paralizing pain that I literally couldn't move for few minutes, I was feeling like my nerves in spine have some knife spining inside them if I moved. It could happen in any time, while I was laying on bed, when I get off the horse, to this day it still always happens when I lay down on the floor and I can't get up. I'm scared, as this is something people much older than me gets and I'm just 19, how can I have something like this?! I found out that since before every ride I stretch, these attacks haven't happened, but if I lay on the floor - here we go again 😭
