Snoopy Concert (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

  • A playthrough of Mitsui Furodan's 1995 Japanese-exclusive adventure game for the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo, Snoopy Concert (スヌーピーコンサート). I am playing using the English translation patch from AeonGenesis.
    The game does support the SNES mouse, but I found it way too imprecise and clunky. I'm using the gamepad.
    Snoopy Concert is a pretty sweet game. Well... it's really not a great GAME, per se, but it's a fun title that really manages to be charming and nostalgic. The gameplay is a lot like Pacman 2: The New Adventures, but unlike Pacman, Snoopy is pretty willing to listen to you via Woodstock (aka cleverly disguised mouse cursor).
    The presentation is second-to-none, and that's what makes Snoopy Concert so special. It captures the feeling of the Snoopy comic perfectly, and it really feels alive. The graphics are all of extremely-high quality and pull off some neat effects you don't typically see on the SNES, and the music is exactly what you'd expect of the Peanuts. I felt like a kid again playing this - it's like a timewarp in the best possible way.
    And the soundtrack was also done by the infamous Hirokazu Hip Tanaka. How's that for a Chuck Norris roundhouse to the jaw? Yeah. It's awesome.

      I didn't know that Charlie Brown was popular enough in Japan for them to make a video game of it. I also hear the drums from street fighter 2 that Zangief's stage starts with.

    As a game, it's not really that great, but as a sheer experience, Snoopy Concert is awesome. It totally feels like a living, breathing version of the comic. Hirokazu "Hip" Tanaka's soundtrack certainly doesn't hurt it any, either.

    This looks really nice and sounds amazing! Really can't imagine why it never got localized, but it makes me smile to know that Japan liked Peanuts as well.

    • @Taneuma_563
      @Taneuma_563 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      There might actually be a reason why. You see, back in the late 80's, A company named Kemco made a sports game for the Famicom about Donald Duck in Japan that was simply called "Donald Duck". They wanted to bring it to the US as "Donald Duck" as well, but they ran into an issue.
      Capcom had owned mostly exclusive console rights in the US to use Disney properties to make games out of, and it would be difficult and time consuming for Kemco to negotiate with Capcom to license their game to them, so they reached out to United Features Syndicate (the copyright owner of the Peanuts strip at the time), and asked for the exclusive console rights to make games using the Peanuts IP within the US.
      They approved, and as a result, Kemco was only allowed to make games in the US on console using the Peanuts IP. If anyone else wanted to make a Peanuts game on consoles within the US, they would have to publish it through Kemco.
      Kemco actually owned the license until about the early 2000's, which brings me to my conclusion that the reason why this may have not been localized is because Nintendo didn't want to go through all the trouble of negotiating with Kemco to release the game in the US.

    0:39 the conversation on from that is hilarious. Another kid saying that Linus is too old to send her a flower.
    Then he wants to find out where she lives and Snoopy is like "and? Not really my problem"
    It is cool to see something cute and innocent like this without the cynical sarcastic overt overtones todays world would slap this with.

    • @rossdavis428
      @rossdavis428 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Troy Wright You are absolutely right; modern-day Political Correctness would ruin genuinely innocent concepts such as this~
      Isn't it amazing how Charlie Brown came out in the 1950s and yet it still has more insight regarding equality and morality than the modern day SJW ideology?
      I found this assessment to be quite astounding by comparison~

    • @troywright359
      @troywright359 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @alabaster5302 it would be way more overt today. I feel like the peanuts franchise handles it in a much more real yet wholesome way, without necessarily needing to be overly mean or hostile.
      I suppose I'm thinking of how it might be read as 'stalking' or something, perhaps family guy would make fun of it, but they aren't a kids show. Maybe you're right and the world is generally the same. It's me who has gotten older.

    Perhaps the reason that Snoopy Concert did not receive a US release is because the game utilized the SNES mouse, and the peripheral sold poorly (it was also for this reason that Kid Kirby, a spin-off to the Kirby series akin to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, was cancelled).

    • @EmmBee27
      @EmmBee27 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We likely didn't get it because the SNES mouse was rather unsuccessful, and releasing a game like this that exclusively used it would've been a bad idea. The only options would've been to bundle it (which would've raised the price of the game) or not release it at all. Translating it might've also been a factor.

      The game allowed you to create your own avatar and interact with several characters in the Peanuts franchise and do several quests which would allow you to meet more characters.
      The game also has several minigames having to do with Snoopy.
      The Japanese is basic enough for someone who is learning the language to be able to understand it without much problem.
