Did this journey 5 days ago in a Peugeot 108, it is completely possible just keep it 20kmph or less otherwise the rocks will kick up from underneath the car. The walk after you park it is NOT for the faint hearted or physically unfit. You have to walk 2 kilometres through the mountains, and the walk back up is TIRING... Easy to say it is NOT wheelchair accessible! I am I am not in shape, and not out of shape and I had to stop a good three times to rest on the walk back up to the car. However it is completely worth it! Make sure you take lots of supplies with you. Keep everything in a ruck sack on your back. Carring possessions up and down in plastic bags or one sided weighing bags will really make it tricky. Keep your hands free for stability! Definitely going back to Balos!

Just did this trip 2 weeks ago with a rented Fiat Panda. It can be done- just drive slowly in high gears. Very bumpy ride. I'm glad I didn't take the boat as it only docked for about 2-3 hours and left. My wife and I spent a good 6-7 hours there until sunset- no rush, enjoying the splendour. Yes, the walk back up the hill is punishing so I suggest doing it after sunset when it's cooler.

yes, it is one hell of a beautiful beach/lagoon. we went to elafonisi a few days later but I prefer Balos.
you definitely don't need a 4x4 to get up there. the evidence is at the end of the video - so many normal 2 wheel drive cars visible at the car park.

been there today, absolutely ain't worth taking in august unless you start at 6 in the morning. cars start parking along the road just after the gate at 12:50 all the way to terminal parking which means you have to walk over 2 kms only to reach the end of the road let alone getting to balos beach...

hi. This year in July, severely motorcycle ride from Polish to Krete.chciałbym ask whether the road is still not without asphalt, and how far you have to cross the stretch of bumps and rocks to get to the beautiful beaches .. ;)?

Having done this drive and walk 2 years ago I have to warn anyone to think carefully before undertaking. The road is hairy and dangerous in places ONLY suitable for a 4WD I did it in a small Fiat and wished we hadn't.
The walk from the top is 20, 30 mins down a steep hill, the decent is OK. The return up a steep hill in 30 degree heat is in itself dangerous and a challenge for all but the fit and able NOT suitable for small children. A great little video but I will never be repeating, I will take the boat next time.

I was there a year ago and had the same bad experience. That was the only bad day of my 10 day vacation on crete. It was absolutely not worth the huge effort to get there and to get out of there. Any relaxation i might have gained on the beach was gone within few minutes after i started to climb those tormenting stone stairs back up in the burning heat of the sun.

The lengths people go to to visit a beach always fascinates me and gives me a chuckle: 1. Fly to a foreign country. 2. Rent car. 3. Drive down crappy road. 4. Look at beach. 🤣

There is not a single car hire agency on the island that is going to let you off in the event of a broken suspension, exhaust pipe, oil carter or ripped off tire on this road or any other similar road. Beware!!!!
