The metal scrapyard may have been the site of National Railway Equipment (NRE). NRE was a scrapper of locomotives and also a dealer and rebuilder of them. I was a railfan back in the 1980s and 1990s. Back then my railfan buddies and I would drive down from the Northwest Side to Dolton Crossing (it was a lot safer back then) and we'd always make a side trip to NRE to see what locomotives were sitting on the siding.
Thanks for the video. As a kid, I grew up in South Blue Island. Hung out In Dixmoor a lot . Sure has Changed. Now I am in Mokena. Yes and go to the town of Phoenix.
Once again we see the devastating effects of de-industrialization and the loss of manufacturing jobs which sustained communities such as this. Most who can afford to leave do so. No significant development replaces what is lost. Poverty, crime, and corruption ensue as a result. Such typical a scenario now as to be cliched.
I worked these areas (the last several videos) as a field manager for a big company for over a decade and grew up nearby. I still live about ten minutes away in a pretty good spot, Oak Forest. I only dream about New Zealand. Nice to hear from ya! 🫡
There is a 1997 article in the Chicago Tribune about the Dixmoor Park District having 59 police officers. They had 7 in 1994. The Park District had no office. I think the article is behind a pay wall so this is a clip "The Dixmoor Park District currently collects nearly $250,000 in taxes. Until recently, it listed as many as 59 officers on its police force, including, federal prosecutors alleged Friday, a leader of the Traveling Vice Lords street gang. The Park District doesn’t have an office, and its phone number is disconnected. In fact, the entire village has only one little park. Even officials at Dixmoor Village Hall aren’t sure how to contact the Park District or where to find its officers." “The last time I heard, they were in St. Mark’s Church,” said Towana Ashley, a village water clerk. "Dixmoor has just a tiny “tot lot” called Children’s Memorial Park. The park at 143rd Street and Paulina Avenue has two swing sets, a slide and a couple of plastic whales and pelicans for children to rock back and forth. There’s a fence around the swing sets, but the seats are falling off the swings, and there is no lighting in or around the park."
I know the southern portion of Cook County is getting worse over the years, especially in South Side Chicago. When it comes to suburbs, Dixmoor, IL is quite a different struggling suburb in Chicagoland. I think Dixmoor has to be the most corrupt suburb in Cook County.
What about Harvey, IL? It sucks too. When I think of the northern portion of Cook County, it's decent, but the best suburbs in Chicagoland has to be in DuPage County.
If you're a Harvey resident would you really want to annex Dixmoor? Thank you Chris for another entertaining video of where not to buy a home in Illinois. Gritty music fits this city perfectly.
Blue Island is a popular place for train watching especially at the junction and cross-overs of Broadway St on the north side of town. There are several rusty steel bridges over the SAG -Cal Channel which make for nice photo backgrounds. There is a lot of train movements through this intersection. The area is a little on the grungy side for sure. There is a little unpaved parking area, and one of the homes has quite a nice garden growing in his backyard during the summer including a small orchard of peach trees. I did find a Dunkin' Donuts in the town proper, so how bad could it be? I forgot to ask if they had toasted coconut!😜😂 If you run out of locations in the rust belt, we have quite a few super fund sites here in New Jersey! Keep up the good work!
I deliver cardboard to a company in Dixmoor all the time. Yep the whole region is trashed. Dixmoor, Harvey, Blue Island, Posen, Calumet City, Dolton, Sauk Village, Chicago Heights, Homewood, Markham, South Holland and many more are all sadly trashed.

But as more people move out of Dixmoor I can also see demographics changes in the town as more Hispanics/immigrants moving into places like Blue Island Posen and creeping eastward towards these areas and Harvey.

What needs to be done with 90% of these kinda areas is all remaining residents should be given money to relocate and the land should be completely cleared and reverted back to farmland. We're literally wasting billions and billions of dollars every year trying to keep these kinda suburbs afloat for what exactly? There comes a point when its time to just turn off the lights and abandoned the whole property.

it really should be annexed, there's no point in it existing on its own at that size, the fact it *can't* exist on its own. it doesn't sound as if there would be a lot of government redundancy to eliminate.
Local Government sounds about like Detroit was when Kwame was in there. Knew a fellow that got his tail in a ringer because he had dealings with Kwame, had a lot of money too henceforth why K. cuddled up to him. Crooks all.
I remember when moving to certain south suburban towns were a sign that you made it. A status symbol, if you will. Now, whether you're in the city or the suburbs, it's basically one in the same.😞

Great video next time do Northbrook Illinois they cook the books too they live behind those gates in those gated communities they are bad people.
I know why this mayor won't be investigated. You know why, too. But we have manners and we don't need to say it out loud. Just know that we know. And we are keeping account for when the temperature in the country is right. Accountability will be meted out, justice served.
So you hate blacks and you eagerly look forward to lynchings being legal? Got it.
Thank God for living rural, no city water for me! Well water with high water tables! 🤪
thank god if your pickup truck broke down, it's only a 45 minute walk to the nearest grocery store lmao
@@Clementinee lol, I can easily get food out the door of my house, deer! Let alone garden is huge!!!! Don’t have to depend on a store! Also have multiple vehicles! Not like you, have to depend on a local grocery store!!!!
Why is it so easy to not have to answer to anyone for embezzling money? Because in Illinois, there are no consequences...or so folk think...
Thats too bad about the steel manufacturing back in the 80 s i became a certified welder and did it for 3 years.not healthy but fun .
Blue island still standing strong for now 💀💪
At least it's NOT Ford Heights or some of the near South-East HOODS of Rockford!!!😮
Rockford is not as bad as Dixmoor. Nothing is as bad as Ford Heights.
@@ChrisHarden Sauk Village is really bad.
Send migrants there. Then you will see how fast the government fixes the water issue.
it really should be annexed, there's no point in it existing on its own at that size, the fact it *can't* exist on its own. it doesn't sound as if there would be a lot of government redundancy to eliminate.
Who wants to annex it?

Why do towns name there town after there water tank ?
So many of these towns in Illinois are dying.
There are a lot. Even for Midwestern state standards.
You think it's just an Illinois problem? 😂😂😂😂😂
Now, whether you're in the city or the suburbs, it's basically one in the same.😞
No it aint some suburbs aren't dead nor villages look at oak lawn evergreen park
Chicago has a lot of nice suburbs still. Just not the ones that I’ve been showing recently and not that many towards the south.
Go check out Robbins . Where Robbin' is what they love to do there 😂
