Daddy bought his cars from Mr. Anderson. My Mother worked at Watson's for a while & then the Dairy Bar. and that is where my parents met. The "castle" use to have these big numbers that they put out for guides of some sort for the river boats. A friends Father, Mr. Ron, worked there & my friend & I played there. LOVED this video111

Enjoyed that one! (I'm from Mississippi, and we usually think of Illinois as being "up north", but in the Ohio River towns of Illinois I always feel like I'm still down south.)

Southern Illinois should be called Northern Kentucky, it's very Southern and not always in good ways. Lots of poverty.

Cairo (Kay ro)was on my list since "The adventures of Huck Finn" the Movie. The bridge over the Mississippi from Missouri ends at a stop sign by a park at the south end of town, a right turn puts you on another bridge to Kentucky over the Ohio River. Cairo has Magnolia trees and levees with massive flood gates on the highway to keep floods out. The "City of New Orleans" still passes through Cairo ,a town with history...

When was a boy 65 years ago Cairo was still an active town as it was a river and rail hub. I was lasr through there 20 years ago and it was sad to see how much of Cairo is gone to ruins. It shouldn't have happened to such a historic place. Now it is lost to changing timrd.

I grew up in southern Illinois. When I hear of rents in California, Florida and Oregon being outrageously high, I think of these quiet midwest towns with nobody on the streets and wonder what a two bedroom home would rent for? These towns are perfect for retirees. I now live in Virginia and we have the same quiet little villages. So enjoyable with homes going back to the 1700's.

I live in Central Illinois about equal distance between Springfield and St. Louis and for me this is the best place to be the way times are. House prices are high but other costs are not bad and Illinois does not tax retirement nor Social Security so it is ideal for my wife and . My wife and I have lived average cities (Decatur IL ) , large cities (St. Louis Mo.-San Antonio TX ) and small towns (Gillespie and Lebanon IL ) and there were good and bad things about each. But here in Gillespie where I was raised, we are living the small town life but are only 50 minutes from either St. Louis on Springfield IlL.) We can enjoy a relatively safe area to live with access to hospitals, restaurants, and city amenities like the Sr. Louis Zoo and At Museum, Cardinal Baseball, Blues Hockey, and the Lincoln Home, Law Office, and Presidential Library. There is also the Mississippi and Missouri River nearby and the historic cities of Alton, Belleville, Lebanon, and Cahokia within an hours drive.

@@bentnickel7487 Yeah. I would agree. We don't have a lot of things in a small town but at 75 the issue is not what I need , but how get rid of the stuff i've accumulated and inherited over the years.
Grocery shopping becomes simplified. Between the foods that i have outgrown, and the stuff the doctors won't let me eat, shopping is simple, cheap, and i recognize most of the songs.LOL

Southern Illinois is horribly hot and humid nine months of the year. The other three are mud season. Hubby is from a town a little farther up the Ohio river. He hates Wisconsin winters, however he doesn't miss the other nine months. Wow, a court house without a security guard and metal detection system!

I read a "Trail of Tears"history book many years ago that said someone felt pity for how hungry the Cherokee's were and gave them pumpkins to eat. However, this gave them diarrhea which made things worse for them. Also, they were given spoiled & rotten food many times on their journey east to west. This book commented that vultures would travel along and at night roost in nearby trees. Sitting around camp at night they could hear the droppings knowing full well that that was their relatives and members of the tribe. An estimated 6,000 died on the 1,200 mile trip. Did they not bury the dead? Not hard to believe they didn't. Hard to hear at times that America is a Christian nation.

Suggest that you check out an interesting and historic Illinoiis town which my wife and I had the pleasure to live in for several years before i entered the Air Force. , Take a trip to Lebanon Illinois and step back in time on their main street and the Mermaid Inn . Charles Dickens stayed there on his travels in the United States. Take in a stage play at the Looking Glass Theater, established in 1973 and still going strong 51 years later. My wife was the first secretary on the board and I came in two years later. Well worth the trip. especially at Christmas when the downtown looks like something from a Currier and Ives drawing.
