  • I saw this video last year and it made me laugh so much. I admire Sigur Ros even more after seeing this interview. Some call it excruciating, some call it awkward - I call it genius. This is how all media interviews should be conducted. Don't you think?

I remember going to a Darkness show in Wolverhampton nearly 20 years ago and Frankie came out to greet the fans. He invited a few of us for a drink in a local bar and we had a great time. It might have been tedious for him, but for us it was the greatest thing ever. He hung out with us squares and embraced us enthusiastically with stories and anecdotes, as well as advice. He answered all of our inane questions with vigour, as I think he knew these questions were important to us. As a young aspiring bass player, this was huge and inspired me to buy a thunderbird bass, grow a mustache and treat everyone better. Frankie is still one of the coolest guys I've ever met. He even indulged in a game we called 'face grab'. I don't think it's fair to judge Sigur Ros by Frankie standards, but I think they could have done better, for the fans at least.

I just don´t know how to feel about this.
My countrymen in Sigur Rós, whilst obviously very talented, come across as a bit arrogant in this interview.
I mean, if you don´t want to do an interview, don´t. If you´re bound by a contract to do so but don´t want to, still show up and show a little bit of respect, do your "job" so to speak. Even if you don´t like the questions, and even if you´ve heard them a thousand times before.
That is just embarassing to watch and not a mature thing to do. This behaviour is the epitome of being arty-farty and I for one can´t stand it!
Yeah... that´s how I feel about this ;)

I've just watched the whole interview and i think it's great, they answer all the questions but with the minimun amount of words, maybe is just their idiosyncracy (I also went to check on their music and it's epic, loved it, thanks again for introducing me to good music).
This is really funny for me because i've just watched an interview of the italian band Måneskin in the Rolling Stone channel that is the complete opposite of this one, 180º, all the band members wanting to talk at the same time, moving all the time, teasing each other, very caotic, very italian

I remember first hearing Sigur Ros in college around 2004 or so. Blew me away. Hadn't heard anything like it and I've got quite a diverse scope even if I do say so myself. Heard Untitled first and then Hoppipolla and went all in. Love them. They have some similarities to Bjorks later work, or more, she shares them as her later albums followed the 'established' sound of Sigur Ros.

My girlfriend made a good point recently regarding having to justify creative decisions in our time at university. Surely the point of art in all forms is to say something that can't be done in typical words/conversation, so then what's the point in dissecting it and doing the abstracted emotion/meaning a disservice?

I'm sort of torn about this. On one hand, there is sort of a painful comedy about it, whether the band is intentionally sabotaging the interview or just...somehow constitutionally unable to engage. On the other hand, it's not like the radio station is purely the parasite in this relationship. There's supposed to be some mutualism. The station exchanges exposure for content. I understand the band may be forced into it, but once you show up, perhaps make an effort. I know bands can feel like they're being treated like puppets or dancing monkeys, but they have the upper hand in the power dynamic and letting this guy twist in the wind just seems like really poor form. Unless they are just more legitimately hopeless at interviews than the interviewer is. That to me is, by far, the funniest option.

    • @murph8411
      @murph8411 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I can’t make up my mind whether the band are just painfully shy/awkward and have nothing to say or if they are having a laugh. Sometimes when I see them glancing at each other and smiling it looks as though they are taking the p but it could also just be a sign of how awkward they feel.

    • @phrike7588

Yeah. This is partially why musicians become musicians. If they didn't want to be seen and heard by as many people as possible, they would've stayed in the basement. And this is part of reaching out to more people. You can hear and see a lot of musicians and actors whining about doing interviews and acting like defiant annoyed children, so ...media and fans have gotten you to this far, so now you can afford to say "f you" and act this way? And sure, it's more fun with fresh creative questions, but "boring repetitive questions" is needed if you want new listeners to take interest in you. They seem to want "advanced course" questions when interviewers need to do introduction stuff.

Can't believe they're doing an interview. They've been round forever and make fairly obscure music - manager needs sacking.
Seen the NPR logo and thought it would be great to see The Darkness do a tiny desk concert.

In terms of awkwardness this is nearly up there with Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins press conference when they returned from the moon... Nearly.

Any chance you could do a video on your top 3 frontmen and their music, but also give your usual honest critique? Would love to know who you consider to be the best and how they could of been better in any way.

Hey Justin, love the channel! Speaking of interviews. Do you remember the Interview The Darkness did on Loveline (A widely syndicated radio program in LA, California) back in 2005. I remember hearing it at the time and not knowing you all and thinking you guys walking out was kind of douchey. But as ive grown my opinion has changed as i realize the subject matter of the show was pretty dark on that night. Do you even remember this event? And if so, what was your persoective at the time then vs now.

Haven’t heard the interview, but IMO, you can’t get more douchey than Adam Corolla and “Dr” Drew Pinsky. Just being aware of Justin and the fellow Darkness members, since this channel started, I’d trust they did the right thing. And I’m aware Justin was not his best self during that time. I’d still trust his judgement to leave. I also know many people enjoy Loveline and it’s not an opinion on them.

@@phoenixgirl70I'm not blaming Justin and the band for walking out on the interview. Clearly they were not informed by management on the premise of the show. But to throw out this opinion based off of one side without hearing the interview is a bit ignorant. I grew up on loveline in the late 90s and early 2000s and it was a safe space for so many troubled kids including myself who needed advice they couldn't go to their parents for. If you have no context on the history of this show I can see why people think this way. Adam had a habit of finding the humor in tragedy and sometimes it didn't always end in the best result. But he and drew always came into this show with the intent of helping these people and I like to think they did more good than they did harm. Hell, Drew did the show for years pro Bono which is crazy considering his busy schedule as a working practitioner and tv personality. I just don't like how Justin still blindly holds this narrative that the fault was with the show and not his management. They busted the darkness' balls about it on occasion but they did that with most European bands and it was pretty much a bit for humor more than malice. If you actually listen to the episode which is on youtube you can see for yourself and make your own judgments.

@@SleeepyJohn That was my problem with it. I was in my early 20’s and I’d hear calls that were serious, people really needing help and they rarely got any, usually because of Adam wasting time and being rude and sure there were people who listened for laughs but many of them needed help. Any helpful advice at all. And how many people knew Drew was an addiction specialist? He had no right giving his opinion as a doctor on the subjects he did. Some people called in to goof around but many more didn’t and with the shitty health care system in the US some people were clinging to any hope of getting to talk. Adam wasn’t used as a way to lighten stuff up, he took over or interrupted so often making crude jokes. And Drew has just become a money hungry pos willing to do anything to get on tv. But as a kid you enjoyed it but you think they did anything but waste the Darknesses time or they found the show tasteless and left? It was 20 years ago. And Sigur Ros rarely do interviews as a a group. Other bands have a basic script of who answers what questions. They aren’t those media trained machines. The singer should have been by himself, he’s usually the one to do interviews. Sorry to go so hard on a show you loved and have good memories of. But man, they pissed me off! A bad reminder, lol.

That interview of Sigur Ros' was Brilliant ! The only thing I can think of that rivals it in the annals of rock interviews is the PIL interview of Johnny Rotten & Keith Lavine done in the early 80's .. This tops it though !

There's something intrinsically scandinavian (northern regions and island nations) about this demeanor as well. Zero urge to small talk or 'talk for the sake of talking', very introverted -- almost somber -- vibe and not afraid of silence. The polar opposite of your average american :D
