I see many comments telling that they are rude or uninterested, but we don't take account that they come from Iceland and it's a different culture. I've met a couple of Icelanders once and they can be quite difficult to meet, also many friends can tell me the same experience and it's not bad it's just different. Because of their culture they are not really so much easy to be really open, but of course they can be open when they want, specially if they consider you a person to trust.
That's the reason of those very simple answers, it's because they don't want to reveal too much of their process, of course they have their own process of making music because they play really precisely. Maybe it's too personal to reveal how they make music, maybe they don't overthink it but always there's a way that we musicians make our music even if it's personal or if it's simple. It's not like "we simply create it" they have their ideas and processes but maybe they are not fancying to tell everyone about it.

The questions are just fake typical bullshit. Icelandic culture does not open up or respond to people asking fake questions. Ask fake questions get fake answers.

If you ever play music or create music, you would know these questions are stupid. We don’t discuss when we make music. Just jam together and try interact and feel the sounds and get inspiration along the way. All work out naturally. Or sometimes it doesn’t work then we will stop playing together. Not that we have any plan to do anything or achieve a certain product beforehand. We cannot explain in a few words how to create it.

I've done similarly distressing interviews. Everyone fears dead air and if the people won't answer your questions, you tend to follow up with either a leading question or polar questions, which invariably end up with the interviewee responding with a 'yes' or a 'no' and more dead air. The worst one I had was discovering I was the 15th person to interview someone that day and no-one told me until 10 minutes before that the person I had been expecting to interview had been taken ill!

So many comments here saying the interviewer blew it and that Sigur Ros are a-holes... Seems like the interviewer did a fine job to me. +TutorialBump I think there was more to this interview than we're seeing. They seemed like they were pissed off about something. They are quiet, mellow, people but they seemed like they were trying to get back at the interviewer for something in this one. For example, if you watch the interview with Nardwuar, they're being goofy and playing around and totally cool with him. I think they were pissed off in this one haha

It's called promoting an album/tour or whatever. You have to remember that like pretty much any prominent aritst, Sigur Ros are signed to a label and their manager will have them do a lot of press etc.
It comes with the territory, and while they'd probably not prefer to interviews after a 14 hour flight, they don't really have too much of a choice. It's not too bad though, as the very nature of their music shows how they have freedom in the studio.

Why does he thank them at the end - for turning up or just a polite way of ending the interview?

This interview was incredible. They refuse to pretend they're anything more than a few musicians who happen to make good music. So many musicians are completely full of themselves.
The thing is, they answered all the questions. They just answered them in a way that most people wouldn't expect musicians to answer them. I respect them for it.

The questions didn’t demand that they pretend they were anything other than that lol. There were plenty of thoughtful ways they could have engaged with the questions, they decided to act like teenagers giving a presentation they’re not interested in. Really ridiculous display, but you spin it however you like.

Interesting questions is the first thing a interviewer must do if he wants to connect with down to earth people like that. I don't think these guys like to waste a good silence to talk about nothing.

I mean what the fuck do you think they wanted him to ask them about then. He's giving them pretty much every opportunity to explore the motivations behind their music and talk about their creative process. Pretty much everything you'd expect musicians to actually care talking about.

props to the interviewer, not his fault that the members of sigur ros ONLY know how to make music, NOT socialize and interact with other people...
