@Qasim Hussain I disagree. The Chasers are actually stronger than they were back then (with the exception of Shaun). What changed are the questions got harder and thus the average amount of steps was reduced. If you start asking the earlier series questions now, the Chasers will be able to go back to how many steps they used to be going. I think the later series version is more interesting, since it is still fast-paced but rewards harder questions being answered.
@Qasim Hussain I have watched the old series. Yes I agree nobody will go up high 20s now because again like I said, the questions are just harder and it's not as easy to intercept to go faster either.
@Qasim Hussain I think it works still. The harder questions are more challenging and I'd say more challenging questions give the advantage to the person that is truly the most knowledgeable/the better quizzer.
The first 'pushback' opportunity (0:49-1:00) is priceless. Bradley Walsh: "Wrong". The older contestant jumping in confidently: "Peach" (also incorrect). The reaction from the younger contestant with arm movements. The hardened gaze from the older contestant in response. I think Walsh also saw the funny side to the agitation from both contestants. Ahh.. loved it. Not that I knew the answer; in fact, to me, 'Melba sauce' sounds strange.
I think the younger contestant knew the right answer. Melba sauce is a sweet sauce made from pureed raspberries thickened with icing sugar,. Named after Dame Nellie melba. PM is a dessert of peaches and raspberry sauce with vanilla ice cream, invented in 1892 or 1893 by the French chef Auguste Escoffier at the Savoy Hotel, London, to honor the Australian soprano. Delicious! Love this show and Bradley Walsh creases me up.
Was watching a few season 1 episodes on challenge recently and couldn't believe the difference in attitudes. A contestant got 9,000 on his cash builder and was disappointed he didn't get 12, bradley unenthusiastically described it as "pretty good" whereas in later years he'd say such a score was superb. A contestant got 18 by themselves in a final chase which was seen as 'not bad', and someone was practically vilified by everyone else present for taking a low offer of £200 instead of the middle offer of £2000 even though there was already £20000 in the pot with only one other player left. Now that would be called sensible, a no brainer. The high offers were much much lower then, and the low offers higher. No minus figures at all, never mind minus ten grand. As someone has said, it was taken much more seriously then and has obviously evolved like anything else. There was just the one chaser, and he was presented as a formidable, virtually invincible powerhouse. Not like the ribbing and micky taking we get now. As i say, was pretty shocked as i don't remember it ever being like that, although maybe i didn't actually start watching it until slightly later.
Just wondering, are you trying to say it's better now or how it used to be I can't quite tell. Either that or are you just telling the differences without an actual opnion?
They didn't keep track of fractional seconds back then. If you look closely, the timer will stop halfway or almost the whole way through a second on a wrong answer (e.g. 1:41, 0:47, 0:34) but when it starts again, it runs through the whole second beefore ticking down regardless. Also, when the clock restarts, the music always picks up from the start of a measure, unlike in later seasons where they just resumed the track from exactly where it had stopped before.
Mark Labbett came across the pond to do the American version on cable channel GSN for a while as well. The host of that version was Brooke Burns, who I think was previously on "Baywatch" for a while. She did alright as host.
Mark has returned to America to be one of the chasers on a new version for ABC. It is now presented by "The View" co-host Sara Haines. The other chasers in this version are former "Jeopardy" champions Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, and James Holzhauer.
@@JosephSeabourne Product placement is ok as long as it isn’t promoting weapons or foods with high sugar levels. (There’s more but I’m not typing them all out, just 2 examples).
ah, where it all began. Wonder what those contestants are doing right this second. Would be pretty cool to be them, known forever as the first ever contestants on the chase.
@Qasim Hussain Thank you, it's mainly because there's been all kinds of best ones, high targets, high prize money, clean sweeps, etc. How could you possibly list them?

The very first final chase has 18 steps, just like their face looks that they wouldn't do. Also that man on the left looks like a mix of BJ Novak and Aaron Rodgers.
I saw the first episode on challenge yesterday, where Ian won 20,000 in the cash builder, Driss opted for 200 instead of the 9,000 he had accumulated. He was very mean by doing so to ensure himself a place in the final and get half of what Ian had earned. It wasn't well received by both Mark or Ian who said he wasn't a team player. A sneaky little git. He should at least have played for the 9,000. You could see the dislike for him on Ian's face. That's why Mark only paid compliment to Ian at the end of the show.
Things have really become laid back since the first episode.
The first series takes everything so seriously, in later series they realised that really doesn't work.
