Even soldiers who aren’t infantrymen don’t understand. The pride doesn’t exist because we have a job that’s physically impressive. It certainly doesn’t exist because it takes a higher level of intelligence to perform our duties. It’s sad and I hate to admit it, but any college student or high school grad can physically do what we do. It’s not THAT demanding and doesn’t take a physical anomaly. Nobody will ever be able to compare us to professional athletes or fitness models. And it doesn’t take a very high IQ to read off serial numbers, pack bags according to a packing list, or know that incoming bullets have the right of way. The pride of the infantryman comes not from knowing that he’s doing a job that others can’t, but that he’s doing a job that others simply won’t. Many infantrymen haven’t seen a lot of combat. While that may sound ideal to the civilian or non-infantry soldier, it pains the grunt. We signed up to spit in the face of danger. To walk the line between life and death and live to do it again - or not. To come to terms with our own mortality and let others try to take our life instead of yours. We have raised our hands and said, “Take me, America. I am willing to kill for you. I am willing to sacrifice my limbs for you. I will come back to America scarred and disfigured for you. I will be the first to die for you.” That’s why the infantryman carries himself with pride and arrogance. He’s aware that America has lost respect for him. To many he’s a bloodthirsty animal. To others he’s too uneducated and stupid to get a regular job or go to college. Only he knows the truth. While there are few in America who claim to have respect for him, the infantryman returns from war with less fanfare than a first down in a high school football game. Yes, people hang up their “Support Our Troops” ribbons and on occasion thank us for our service. But in their eyes the infantryman can detect pity and shame; not respect. CONSIDER THIS: HOW EXCITED WOULD YOU BE TO MEET THE AVERAGE INFANTRYMEN? NOW COMPARE that with how excited you’d be to meet a famous actor or professional sports player and you will find that you, too, are guilty of placing the WRONG PEOPLE ON A PEDESTAL. You wouldn’t be able to tell me how many soldiers died in the war last month, but you’d damn sure be able to tell me if one of the actors from Twilight died. Yet the infantryman doesn’t complain about that. He continues to do his job; to volunteer his life for you, all while being paid less in four years than Tom Brady makes in one game. Well yea, because the MoH isn’t exactly an award that is given for happy memories. While it’s the highest honor a Service Member can receive, it’s given for their actions on possibly the worst/scariest day of their lives.
I'm Proud to say I am the 3rd Great Nephew of Medal of Honor recipient Richard E. Byrd. It was the beginning of the aviation and patriotic legacy passed down to me. I hope to attend the Naval Academy in a few years.
You wouldn’t have made it there on your own. Being related to someone who was awarded a MOH will open doors. But you’re always going to be riding coattails based on your “patriotic legacy.” So long as you understand that and are humble about it, I wish you all the luck in the world. If not, don’t join. We have enough dirtbag officers to deal with already.
Don't try to "win" a MoH, just keep the people under your command alive and you'll be their hero. No one with a brain tries to "win" decorations people receive combat decorations for being in the wrong place at the wrong time but some how they get themselves and their battle buddies out of terrible situations against all odds.
What makes all these men the greatest to walk the earth is they didn’t do it for the medal. They did it for the men beside them and the people back home. God bless America

Last year at a McDonalds in West Texas I happened to meet Gary Littrell MOH and had a good talk. Many of the vets of Vietnam pay for their service for the rest of their lives with injuries that never heal, cancers that have no cure and family and friends that turn their back. All I can say is please thank them for their service.
I’m sure someone has said this before in the comments but I feel compelled to address it. If you are the person who disliked this, and are reading this, please remove the dislike. These men made our country and hundreds of million people free and safe from authoritarian regimes. It is very disrespectful to dislike a video about them.
Proud as hell to have met, prayed with, cried with and laughed with 12 of these men, though we lost Gary Beikirch in 2022. 3 of these men were dear friends of my father. They are the epitome of humility, grace, and love for their brothers. We must strive to be worthy of the sacrifice they all represent.

Harvey Curtiss Barnum Jr was my Boot Camp battalion commander when I went through Boot Camp at Parris Island in 1979. Seeing that blue ribbon with the five stars during final dress uniform inspection was almost hypnotizing. I had 3 interactions with him while I was in Boot Camp and all were positive. I'm sorry our paths never crossed again in the field artillery world.

Now those are real heroes. The men who are Medal of Honor recipients, they had earned it and they earned it the hard way and many unwillingly. But still accepted it for recognition of team effort. These guys are studs and real team players. These are the people who I truly admire over, and who should be an inspiration for all Americans and all Americans should be proud of them.
I'm not an American, and my country is not always on the same ground as US when it comes to politics. But i always admire these gentlemen's extraordinary stories of valor and putting other's lives before their own. For me it's a virtue that all human, regardless of nationality, political conviction, or religion can always look up to.

When on active duty, we were working the Indy 500 over Memorial Day Weekend back around 1998 or so, and they were saluting CMH recipients that day. Got to sit in the sky box with about a dozen of these guys and watch the race and drink a few beers, one of my treasured memories. I remember getting their names and then going back later to read their citations, you'd never know what they went thru, they were the most gracious and down to earth guys. A few have passed away since then, sad loss to our country.
I met Mr. Williams at his party thrown for his achievement. Was a very respectful and polite man when we spoke. However I could tell he was very in his own head and was a very battle hardened individual.

This brought tears to my eyes. Allow me to quote Patton, referring to those KIA, "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the who . Rather we should thank God that ." And for the living, my homage to Patton: We need to thank God, that such men live.
If you think about it, the fact that less people are getting awarded the Medal of honor over time is a good thing. It means these great men and women are doing theit jobs morr effeciently in a way that minimizes the amount of lives lost. A common theme I’ve noticed in Medal of Honor recipients is for saving lives not taking them.
The one thing that all CMH recipients have in common is none of them set out to win a medal

Look at their faces and remember them next time you deploy. They know the meaning of sacrifice to fight for their brothers and sisters. Remember those faces. Every soldier, sailor, marine, and airmen should have that mentality.
