    The return of gravel traps, that's nice to see! The asphalt run offs were way too large and possibly more dangerous as a result.

    • @sauldula
      @sauldula 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Nah gravel is more dangerous, friction from tarmac is higher allowing you to slow down faster without the risk of rolling over. And the bikes really hate gravel runoff, and track day cars as well. It's really just for making drivers less aggressive in the entry speed because there so much of a larger punishment for going off, which will in turn make it safer

    All these changes are to make Spa safer for motorcycles. They've done a good job. Eau Rouge and Radillon had to be changed to stop accidents being funnelled back onto the circuit at the blind crest, so to avoid changing the track layout, they've moved the banking back and moved hundreds of tonnes of earth. Can't have another Hubert-esque crash there again.

    • @psyaviah
      @psyaviah 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, but they managed to keep the corner they way it is. That must have been a challenge. All in all, all the changes across the track kept the character of the track intact imho, and only made it better in terms of safety, but also a very good and calculated move where both bikes and racing cars are safe or have more challenging scenarios.

  • @StarkRaven59
    @StarkRaven59 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    I don't really understand what all the hate is about. The overall track layout hasn't changed. The cars will still work about the same as they always have. There's just more runoff and some gravel in certain areas, and a shortcut for motorcycles so they aren't slamming into a barrier that can't be moved. It's still Spa in the end.
    I do have concerns about the runoff space into turn 1, if someone on a motorcycle has a brake failure there, it could get very ugly.

    • @karelpgbr
      @karelpgbr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To touch on your concern on break-failures on motorbikes, you don’t stay on the bike, look up Maverick Vinales Austria brake-failure.
      Any rider with a brain will step off.
      Edit: th-cam.com/video/K0J9iXzeRNc/w-d-xo.html

    • @StarkRaven59
      @StarkRaven59 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@karelpgbr Vinales' brake failure is precisely what prompted my concern. Even if you get off the bike, you still need somewhere to slide and lose speed. Vinales himself slid almost the length of the runoff. La Source/turn 1 if I've got my names wrong, seems to have a limited amount of space available. That said, it is a shorter straightaway, so hopefully it's less of an issue. Even more hopefully, we never find out.

    • @psyaviah
      @psyaviah 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StarkRaven59 indeed, correct. And it has been widened, and it is a shorter straight just after a chicane where you are building up speed, but not massive amounts. And there's a lot of gravel now as well. They've done a good job overall in what is possible - and kept the track essentially the same.

    I literally do not understand at all why people seem so upset about this. The track is basically identical. The reason the turn 1 runoff was so heavily utilized is because it was THERE. As a driver, knowing there is a huge runoff encourages you to bail out of corner limits early to keep your speed up as much as possible, or to push another driver wide because you know he has plenty of asphalt to work with out there. Now, knowing there is gravel, drivers will drive differently. In fact, it’s almost like they’ve figured this out already at other tracks with grass or gravel on corner exits, hmmm….
    Also, people talk about butchering an iconic track but that just shows a complete lack of knowledge on the history of the circuit. There used to be a freakin WALL on the outside of the T1 exit. Every corner had grass and trees on the outside. There were houses on the sides of the straights. Spa was way more “butchered” years ago.
    These changes are essentially innocuous and/or long overdue. The track is the same. It makes no sense to complain just because they added a second layout to a single corner while keeping the original layout nearly the same for the vast majority of racing series.

  • @charlesmatthews-dewing6718

    I don't mind the loss of the tight walls up to Eau Rouge, the accident in GT a few years ago when car ended out of the circuit kind of meant that was going to happen eventually. The only one that saddens me is at the top of the hill. I think they should have had a separate corner in the existing chicane for the motorbikes, meaning the wall could be kept on the outside, let's be honest it is low speed, but make a mistake or lose it in the rain you will hit the wall - Perez for example.
    Otherwise don't think it has taken too much out of the track, just made it safer and better viewing options. Overall well done Spa, much better than when they got rid of the old bus stop 👍

    • @psyaviah
      @psyaviah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No worries, they did not change the iconic character of the corner (see www.spa-francorchamps.be/sites/default/files/image/16.03.2022_logo_05.jpg). But they did add as much runoff on the left side, which would prevent cars bouncing on track as we've seen so many times before. It's massive how deep they cut the runoff, also mind, the new grandstand that is now in place. For me this is probably the best they could have done by keeping the track's character intact, but also increase safety.

      1. Codemasters make an annual title, so unlike GT, Assetto and Forza where they have 4-7 years to develop their games, codies get ONE. They have limited time and thus limited resources to make 100% updated and realistic tracks, especially as they make entirely new ones like Miami for 22, Vegas, Qatar for 23.
      2. Tracks change their layouts and features depending on sponsorships, the events, the time of year etc. So at times they do look like they do in F1. There are few tracks still using a 2012 version or model in the 2020 game.

      Spa isn't getting easier, it's getting harder. Way more gravel trpas then asphalt runoffs, which is exactly what many GP drivers wished for. The new corner after Bruxelles ist only (the bottom line in the first part of video) is just for Motorcycle use, car races still use the other (top) corner. The racetrack layout for cars actually hasn't changed in any way, making a mistake just got both safer and more punishing.

      Layoutwise nothing has changed for car races. They widened some runoff areas and added some gravel traps where there was asphalt runoff before (something many GP drivers wished for). The only change in terms of layout is adding the corner option in the first part of the video (no-name corner between Bruxelles and Pouhon) for Moto GP races, but the original corner layout is untouched and will still be used for all car races.

      Why? What was massacred? The track itself was partly resurfaced, but not altered, so it's just as before. The new alternate paths allow other categories to enjoy this masterpiece of a track without changing the familiar layout. There are even some new gravel traps, which most people see as a positive.

      If the cars are too big, then fix it yourself, you made the fucking regs, why in God's good name can't you fucking fix them, hell F1's been shit since 2017 with those beast mode regs, if they stuck with the main regs for 2016 with some minor detail work here and there, F1 would be better than where it is now.
