Ross fitted me in i530s recently, retro loft and graphite shaft. Getting much better flight and descent angles now with a little extra distance as well. So far so good!
funny how subjective the preferences of these clubs are when different hands get hold of them. I'm swinging a 7i in the 93-97mph club speed, and found the 245s were consistently the better club across the board. the only mark in the win column that Ping got was a little more ballspeed - which I was not looking for. 245s were fit to modus 120x steel shafts and ordered a couple weeks ago. excited for new sticks!
@@epgolfstudios to the central point of your video, though, several brands in this "players distance" space make exceptional clubs and ping is included.
@rickrisatti6029 yup true Mizuno do offer a good spectrum of shafts which is brilliant. But they do also cost £20 more per club than the Ping so for a 4-PW set you're still paying £140 more of the Mizunos. And for most people all manufacturers would have a stock shaft that is more than suitable
I like these videos with the slower swing speeds , I was surprised that 75mph was considered average , myself at 62 yrs old thought I would be lucky to be at the average but I am at the 82 to 85 mph range and don't have any problem launching either of these models so happy here !! and you are right they are launching too low , I am assuming you are using a tour ball Pro v etc. for people that like these irons but are needing more launch maybe a ball change would help like a Callaway Supersoft or something similar as it should launch higher as a two piece ball does and could mute the clicky sound of that Ping.
I agree that at 75 MPH the player should be looking at one of the HL (high launch) models from these brands. These irons should be tested at 80 mph at a minimum which will change spin and launch dramatically.
Great video. The COG of both of these means they will launch the ball higher which for the right swing will result in high shots with decent land angles. I recently went for a fitting and tried all sorts of different head and shaft combinations. I ended up with i530’s modus pro shafts and I’m delighted with them.
Yeah COG plays a small part but loft is by far the biggest factor in launch, so I would still class these as relatively low launching irons. But that's not too say they aren't brilliant, because they absolutely are. They just need to for the player well and there will be loads of golfers out there that these irons will be amazing for
@@epgolfstudios the loft on the 7 iron is 29 deg so quite strong but if you hit a really high ball (which I do) then the landing angle will still stop the ball quickly. Keep up the good videos. I’d love to see a matchup between the new Vokeys and the S159’s..
@@derekturner744 absolutely yes. And yeah I never really do much with wedges tbh as the head to heads are just a bit boring 😂 if you have a 54* degree Vokey Vs 54* S159 the numbers would be identical. So when it comes to wedges its all just about getting the right bounce and grind for the player and the versatility needs. And some manufacturers might just have better options for you than others
Good to see you going the extra mile to test clubs at the speed of an average golfer, not many in the TH-cam world do. I play the i525 for almost 2 years now and love the,m, did try out the old Mizuno pro 225 but that’s a tag too compact for my liking despite a slightly better feel, interesting to note you said it’s the other way around in this generation, sound like it’s down to preference between these two.
Thanks Ricky! We always like to do stuff in depth! And yeah absolutely, the performance between these 2 is remarkably close. So looks and feels will come into it a lot
@@epgolfstudios fair point Ross. Are your 8 brands at similar price points though? If so, that’s where Wilson is nice to have as they often perform similarly to the “leading” brands but can save people a few bucks - important in a “cost of living criss”. Love your videos, and I think I’ve barely missed once since I discovered your channel. Keep up the great work mate
I was getting great height on the Pings when I was testing the club, my 7 swing speed is around 85, so both clubs may be more suitable for a little higher swing players.
@@starks1974 yeah they would be for sure, and as i mention on the video how you deliver the club will play a massive part too. Swing speed is only one part of the equation 👌
Ross, I am getting fitted on Monday. Testing the i530 and Mizuno Pro 245 going to test various graphite shafts. Currently I have Mizuno JPX 919 Hot metal pro. Graphite shaft because I am now 70 years old in good shape carrying 7.8 Index. Thoughts?
Hey Peter, yeah I mean really fitting is all about testing and finding out what's right, go with your gut on the feel and weight and balance of the club and go with the head that you get on with the best and gives you the best performance numbers. But if your swing speed is low don't get dragged in by distance, make sure your are getting as much height and stopping power as possible as a lot of these strong lofted irons aren't the best as slightly slower speeds
@@epgolfstudios Excellent advice Ross! Feel is really important. I'm expecting decent performance numbers. I definitely want to control my misses. Thanks Ross, great videos.
Im a 12hcp playing mizuno old blades. Im looking for new irons: distance is not a problem, need forgiveness but also enough spin to stop the ball in tiny greens. Wich 3-5 models should I be looking to? Thanks! I love your vids!
I am around 70-72 mph swing speed with 7i so around that 100-103 mph ball speed. I lack height and spin because I like to draw the ball. play to around a 7 or 8 cap and iron play isn't the best so I like a bit of help. The Callaway Smoke HL iron with its weaker lofts helped and their stock steel shaft is an Elevate 85g was a good fit. I am just not a Callaway fan. So the search continues. Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal HL is another good one but a bigger profile. if you like a smaller profile the Srixon ZX5 is a really high launcher of the ball. it won a fitting for me last year and was the only iron to get over 70' peak height (out of it, the i230, g430, ZX4, T350)
It was more the feel off the face. The Ping just felt it exploded off the face and just made you feel good. Which I'm sure some won't like, which is absolutely fine. The 245 to me just felt a bit duller and deader off the face.
Could be a lot of things that's causing it. I find a lot of the time it's strong grip and/or taking the club away closed with a lack of loft in the back swing. Try and get so the toe is up in the air when the shaft is a first parallel in the takeaway, don't try and keep the face pointing at the ball and don't worry about it matching your spine angle. Then turn to the top trying to keep that 'open face' feel. Then in the downswing just feel like you cast the club and almost a scooby/wristy sensation. If you do all those you should get some loft on the club
Yup that would be a very close head to head, the numbers would be super similar. It's just another P790 basically isn't it 😂 not much difference between them all when they are playing the same loft
I have had zero issues getting a nice high ball flight with stopping power. @@TZOID08 75 - 80 IS average on the spectrum of every golfer out there. It's not what I see it's just the facts. Same as around 90mph with driver is average.
