He actually expects people to count things like tomatoes and cucumbers as vegetables so he has taken that into account when making the list. He decided to go with the way people usually group these things instead of the scientifically accurate grouping of fruits, vegetables and berries. Just wanted to let people know.

I was suppose to meet him at the Plantrician event I photographed in LA last September, but he backed out to do the cruise ship event in Europe. Did get to meet so many legends though like Campbell, Esselstyn, Davis, etc. Such a great group and an amazing event that keeps growing every year. just so you know - the app tells you what counts as a fruit or vegetable. Dr Gregor as personally put certain things in a particular category based on what their nutrient profile fits in with what culinary description. Culinary and botany descriptions of plants varies vastly, so nutritionally it makes sense to do the same. Culinary terms describe what purpose the food serves in terms of flavour profile and nutrients to some extent. For example, a cucumber is a berry and blueberries are not a berry, but based on the nutrient profile it makes sense to put them in different category. You even mentioned a bit about how quinoa is a seed with the nutrient profile of a grain, it's the same thing with fruits, veg, berries etc.

    • @mollygrace3068

It makes sense to count things like tomatoes and peppers as vegetables nutrition-wise. It doesn’t matter that they “have seeds” or whatever.

I imagine that you always get in more than you need and never would need Dr. Greger's app, Derek, but it's fun to check stuff off and take on a challenge, right? 😊 Incidentally, I credit *you* with helping to make being vegan easy for me. I eat very simple one bowl meals, and you're my influence. Dr. Greger's app only adds to the ease of my journey. These days, there's no reason why being plant-based or vegan should be considered complicated, expensive or unattainable. I *don't* make a lot of money, and I can't always eat organic, but I feel plant-based vegan is the best, cheapest and simplest way to eat. Thank you for all you do, and thank you for including Crystal. She's always a joy to see. xx

Regarding the onions and garlic, I have had digestive problems most of my life. Recently, I have been on a low FODMAP diet. Through trial and error on that diet, I found that of all the FODMAPs, I am most sensitive to oligosaccarides. Onions and garlic happen to be two foods that contain that type of sugar. Hence, I am subbing in chives, garlic chives, the green part of scallions and the green part of leeks. So far that's worked out when making meals at home. Eating out is still tricky even though I don't do that much.

I posted a link to your post-recovery smoothie on one of my vegan FB sites (McDougall Friends) and, like Dr. Greger, was met with a bunch of comments that smoothies (or juices) are not allowed on the McDougall Plan (Starch Solution). I believe the reasoning is that it's way easier to eat more calories when you drink them than if you ate and chewed whole foods. Oh well - personally after a hard workout, I WANT to get those calories in and get those nutrients going to the muscles. LOVE your videos (and you & Crystal - put a ring on it!).

Could you discuss fructose replenishing liver vs.muscle glycogen? Is a large fruit smoothie really optimal post workout?

Great vid! So fun to watch and this daily dozen app looks so much better than messing with cronometer which was fun for a week and then not that much.

Great Vid Derek! :) Spreading the facts.... nutrition facts :) Just a point of clarification; i think Dr. Greger explains that in the app he uses the more colloquial definition of veg and fruit, nuts and seeds. So tomato, peppers and cucumber would be considered veg even though they are technically fruit.I stand to be corrected, but thought i'd put it out there. Keep up the good work!

Hey, you can mix beans into your smoothies, which would probably be a good idea for protein, since that's a post workout thing, right? Same thing with nut butter. I really like what you're doing, but I find the music to be very unpleasant and distracting. Any chance you can use something mellower?
