Super refreshing seeing you post this. We need more transparency in the HVAC industry today. As a homeowner I understand you have overhead and need to make money to be profitable and operate. However we don’t want to get taken advantage of and your prices are very reasonable. As a homeowner I really like extended labor warranties as it makes me feel comfortable knowing I’m good in terms of future costs besides maintenance. Maybe offer that to homeowners in the future. We spend a little extra upfront to hedge against future service and repairs because machines breakdown even with proper preventative maintenance. Thank you again Mr. Curtis! Great video
@@zippythechicken I'm not totally disagreeing with you, but what I looked up on line, the different seer units just do not make that big of a difference on the electric bill, not really justifying the difference in price. You may save a few hundred a year, that is not worth it.

I think most of it is sales pitch. I know I would not pay the difference in price. Price of electric vs the cost of the unit, It didn't work out for me, figuring the unit to last 20 years.
@@jthonn You need to study seer rating further..SEER stands for “seasonal energy efficiency ratio.” Essentially, a SEER rating divides the average heating or cooling output of a temperature control system by the average energy the unit consumes in terms of Watts per hour over a cooling season. Essentially, the SEER on an HVAC system will help you determine how energy-efficient the unit is

Really good price brother here in Palm Springs California for the same system that you quoted it cost around $12,000 priced by independent contractor but if you go for a big company probably cost around $18,000 due to overhead cost. I saw a lot experts in the comments but I bet nobody of those commenting runs a hvac company, it’s easy to comment in your moms basement and become an expert in how to calculate mark ups 😂 … great video hermano
You won’t regret recommending the Gree units. I’ve got 2 mini splits in operation now. An 18k single head and a 48k triple head in separate buildings. They both work well in our 35C summers and -30C winters.
When I see an attic with this much space, I immediately think of mini splits because of the extra room available in the attic for a new room space finished.. 3 Gree systems withe 3 -5 heads each.

I know with Amana’s new seer2 stuff the line size on the outdoor units are one size bigger. I’m not sure how Rheem Ruud does it but just good information to have. Thank you for showing us this. The liquid stays 3/8” but the suction goes from 7/8” to 1 1/8” to maintain capacity and efficiency. If you leave it 7/8”, it will result in call backs because it will run much longer and the customer will be warm. Seer2 is a good machine if you install it correctly.
Very fair, in the DMV area you’re at about 12.5k-15k for the same job. Remember folks cheap ain’t always good. You got your unit installed cheap for a reason!
I have a Gree Flex. Going on 2.5 years. Was the only thing available due to supply pipeline issues after the pandemic (Dec 2021). Was not sure, but it's been great and for the price I'm very happy. Was originally looking for a Bosh.
When quoting a replacement, do you ever ask if they were happy with the performance before it died (or whatever)? Sometimes people move into a house that was renovated without updating the HVAC, or occasionally it wasn’t sized properly to begin with. Opportunity.
@@jthonn Yes, but maybe that performance was coupled with an oversized system. Many people are happy with what they have because they've never experienced the difference.

The bridge collapse? or perhaps the Panama Canal..Extortion?...I'm glad I did it last year...Even with double the equipment cost its still not a $12,000 job.
You can get a LG 4 ton, 20 SEER, heat pump for under $5000. It's not American but way better than anything from China. I buy them from Build with Ferguson and the price includes shipping to the job site.
Nice attic space...small access however as those doors are tiny getting there. If they're selling 20 SEER2 systems for the same price, I'd educate them as to the savings they should realize. Being all electric, that should be fairly accurate to figure. What about calculating for supply and returns, type of registers, newer ducting, newer methods for connecting ducting etc. Is that needed to be sure the existing sizes are correct and materials correct for the newer systems? I only question why the labor charge is hit with a 40% markup. I understand materials should be marked up but I've never heard of labor marked up for overhead and profit.

I can't believe your price. When I had mine estimated 20 years ago it was twice as much for a 3 ton package unit. So here you are allowed to buy and install your own unit. Still have to still pull a permit and get it inspected. It cost me for everything under 3 grand
I was quoted $ 12,000 for a 3 ton 16 seer Goodman heat pump replacement last year in Brevard Co. Florida .Several other contractors were higher....One of the local contractors wanted to lease the equipment for $350 a month...One offered a Noryne for $8 grand but it was a 14 seer.. I don't like Nordyne. I purchased everything myself,had it shipped to my door step with lift bed. I Installed it myself..(I'm an A/C Contractor Retired 15 years). I borrowed a recovery machine. Purchased a jug of 410A, Testo 550 gauges,Filled my B tank, dug out my box of fittings and silver solder.. Total purchase price $ 2600...Goodmans are great if installed properly.Hard start kit, surge suppressor on the disconnect.Reduced my power bill $200 bucks a month...It took me twice as long as it did when I was 35...lol I'm 69 now..I don't know how folks can afford the contractors mark up in Brevard Co...Sad that it all cost me $2600 and they wanted to charge me 12 grand for the exact equipment,Its ok to make a fair profit but this is rape. pure and simple..They thought I was joking when I told them I'd do it myself.Most difficult part was putting new rubatexed copper through the chase pipe...

Rheem ain't American. Made in Mexico. People in Arkansas think that Rheem/Ruud are made in Fort Smith but they stopped making residential systems there a while ago. Thanks for doing the estimate. You are pretty much in line with what I charge for systems.

I lacked heating in my house for the past 13 years and boy was that wonderful keeping comfy and warm. I've recently used it during these past few warm days and it cools my home in around 10 minutes and shuts off.
I would do 16 hours labor, 20% on equipment, 40% on extra parts. I do appreciate you showing us this info. I do commercial HVAC service quoting and not sure how residential is quoted.

I just did a 2 ton split heat pump for 8k using Ameri-Star equipment. As for "American made" I think York still claims to be American made but not a fan of their heat pumps. The Ducane type stuff will also be junk before the warranty is up. Carrier/ICP low end is cheaply made but tends to hold up.
I was told 15 k with a 15 seer Goodman. 2 ton I’m in the mountains of western North Carolina. That was the max ,last year .I went with a better price. Same equipment. Not builders grade.
While those high seer units, 18 and 20 seer, use less electric they also seldom pay for themselves. Mostly they are a talking point for people that are willing to part with their money. Most people never keep good records to see if they actually pay out or not.
I'm glad my son has own AC/ Refrigeration business. I have to force him to at least let me pay for equipment & reasonable labor charge. I still always feel he goes in the red with me 😊
I don’t know how you survive. You need to charge for your time/labor. You will need to get a helper for the day. Also need to charge more for your miscellaneous/supplies, you need to charge your nitrogen and use of your vacuum pump. It’s your business sir but you need to make more. 👍🏻👍🏻
Ok ,I'm trying not to have a negative knee-jerk reaction to the 40% markup. That being said I'm having a hard time understanding what exactly the customer gains by paying a 40% mark up considering the hvac manufacturer gives a 10 year parts and a 1 year labor on their warranty the same as the this videos host stated he was giving for his 40% mark up. Anyone?

If I'm to go with just your comment, I'm left with the conclusion that I as a customer in this scenario is just volunteering to pay the hvac contractor 40% markup as charity to his business. There doesn't seem to be any substantiate reason otherwise. Again, not to repeat my question. However, I will, in this case. What are the benefits of the customer for paying a 40% markup considering he isn't giving any benefits that the hvac manufacturers don't already give ?
@joshuaseaton7002 Oh , I almost forgot to answer your question. Yes, I ran a business, profitably, I might add for most of my adult life. Any markups I had benefited the customer and granted myself as well. I also could explain such markups easily with my customers as well.

Try walking into a restaurant and asking them how much they are marking up your steak. You would never ask nor would they ever tell. That's called running a business. How I came to my job price is nobody's business but my own. If you try and ask me, my first thought is why? What I make is none of your business just like yours is none of mine.
@joshuaseaton7002 I agree with you to a certain extent,however, it's not the total price of the quote this contractor has given I have issues with. The bottom line is that he has a price that he is willing to do the job. The customer either agrees to pay his price or shop somewhere else. My issue is with the way he is breaking down his price. What the customer sees is that he has essentially written up a quote with labor and parts to do the job. Then he goes further and adds a 40% markup with the only explanation is he's giving a 10 years parts and a 1 year labor for the additional markup. This leads the customer only one assumption. That is, he's charging an additional fee for in the eyes of the customer, nothing that benefits them. Why not just add more to the hourly labor rate to the quote to cover his cost to do the job. He's essentially made his quote look suspect. The customer is left with the idea he is being taken advantage of. People understand labor,especially a technical skill like hvac. His labor rate is only $95 an hour. Seriously, our house cleaner gets more than that an hour. Oh and the restaurant that is selling steak dinners isn't paying retail for their steaks. They are paying wholesale. If the steak house broke down the cost of the bill like he is doing they would see a labor charge to cook the steak and an additional upcharge from a retail price of said steak you just know people would complain and go elsewhere for their steaks. Again, it's perception! My question to you is, are you not getting hvac equipment at wholesale prices? If not maybe this is the problem. From what I see and have determined, the hvac manufacturers are not selling you equipment at wholesale. I honestly don't know. What I do know is this might be why the hvac community is getting so much flack from consumers. Yes we understand the cost of business and we understand the economy. What is so baffling is the way it's quoted. No other trade that I can think of has this much animosity towards it as the hvac community. It just may be well earned...
Funny at all the comments about the markup. Own a business and then come and over and leave your input. Every time you pull permits for a job you have to put the total cost of the job and pay taxes on that to the county. Pay taxes, bond & insurance, vehicle maintenance & insurance. Plus much more. Do you guys go to a restaurant and ask why is your meal marked up
Here’s the reality when customers ask for a certain brand of system. I always ask why. In my 20 yrs of doing this I see more failures due poor workmanship and not following the correct procedures during the installation. So I always tell the customers whoever you buy from. Buy the best extended labor warranty you can. And not a inhouse one with the company that is putting it in. example Goodman’s has the assurance warranty thru Goodman. Which allows you to use whoever you want. So if you’re not happy with the company that puts it in. You can fire them and use someone else. It’s the best protection you can have

It was a mark up on materials. Pretty standard. A contractor always marks up materials. They have to order, receive and transport. That’s takes time and effort. As well as they are usually getting a discount as a contractor. 99% of all contractors make up material costs

True, very true. This customer is running a 3.5 ton condenser on a 4 ton coil and AH. If not performing well enough, can go the full 4 ton system.

Do you run a load calc and evaluate ductwork? Do you offer an extended labor warranty thru JBL? Might help you get more changeouts.
There are times when I do load calcs. And I’m considering extended labor warranty but not through an insurance company.

I paid 10500 for a five ton Bosch sheer 18.5 in the hottest place in America. It gets well over 119 degrees in the summer!!
How do you like the Bosch equipment? One of our suppliers started selling bosch equipment to be honest I really never heard that brand around here.

I was told 15 k with a 15 seer Goodman. 2 ton I’m in the mountains of western North Carolina. That was the max ,last year .I went with a better price. Same equipment. Not builders grade.

Price just doubled for the Florida fans
While those high seer units, 18 and 20 seer, use less electric they also seldom pay for themselves. Mostly they are a talking point for people that are willing to part with their money. Most people never keep good records to see if they actually pay out or not.

I don’t know how you survive. You need to charge for your time/labor. You will need to get a helper for the day. Also need to charge more for your miscellaneous/supplies, you need to charge your nitrogen and use of your vacuum pump. It’s your business sir but you need to make more. 👍🏻👍🏻

Ok ,I'm trying not to have a negative knee-jerk reaction to the 40% markup. That being said I'm having a hard time understanding what exactly the customer gains by paying a 40% mark up considering the hvac manufacturer gives a 10 year parts and a 1 year labor on their warranty the same as the this videos host stated he was giving for his 40% mark up. Anyone?
Have you ever ran a contracting business? We need to put money back into the business, we are trying to build it up. We don't work for a paycheck.

If I'm to go with just your comment, I'm left with the conclusion that I as a customer in this scenario is just volunteering to pay the hvac contractor 40% markup as charity to his business. There doesn't seem to be any substantiate reason otherwise. Again, not to repeat my question. However, I will, in this case. What are the benefits of the customer for paying a 40% markup considering he isn't giving any benefits that the hvac manufacturers don't already give ?
@joshuaseaton7002 Oh , I almost forgot to answer your question. Yes, I ran a business, profitably, I might add for most of my adult life. Any markups I had benefited the customer and granted myself as well. I also could explain such markups easily with my customers as well.
@@number1pappy Nothing needs to be explained to the consumer. My price is what it is for me to put money back into my business and make a profit. Try walking into a restaurant and asking them how much they are marking up your steak. You would never ask nor would they ever tell. That's called running a business. How I came to my job price is nobody's business but my own. If you try and ask me, my first thought is why? What I make is none of your business just like yours is none of mine.
@joshuaseaton7002 I agree with you to a certain extent,however, it's not the total price of the quote this contractor has given I have issues with. The bottom line is that he has a price that he is willing to do the job. The customer either agrees to pay his price or shop somewhere else. My issue is with the way he is breaking down his price. What the customer sees is that he has essentially written up a quote with labor and parts to do the job. Then he goes further and adds a 40% markup with the only explanation is he's giving a 10 years parts and a 1 year labor for the additional markup. This leads the customer only one assumption. That is, he's charging an additional fee for in the eyes of the customer, nothing that benefits them. Why not just add more to the hourly labor rate to the quote to cover his cost to do the job. He's essentially made his quote look suspect. The customer is left with the idea he is being taken advantage of. People understand labor,especially a technical skill like hvac. His labor rate is only $95 an hour. Seriously, our house cleaner gets more than that an hour. Oh and the restaurant that is selling steak dinners isn't paying retail for their steaks. They are paying wholesale. If the steak house broke down the cost of the bill like he is doing they would see a labor charge to cook the steak and an additional upcharge from a retail price of said steak you just know people would complain and go elsewhere for their steaks. Again, it's perception! My question to you is, are you not getting hvac equipment at wholesale prices? If not maybe this is the problem. From what I see and have determined, the hvac manufacturers are not selling you equipment at wholesale. I honestly don't know. What I do know is this might be why the hvac community is getting so much flack from consumers. Yes we understand the cost of business and we understand the economy. What is so baffling is the way it's quoted. No other trade that I can think of has this much animosity towards it as the hvac community. It just may be well earned...

Every time you pull permits for a job you have to put the total cost of the job and pay taxes on that to the county. Pay taxes, bond & insurance, vehicle maintenance & insurance. Plus much more. Do you guys go to a restaurant and ask why is your meal marked up

Here’s the reality when customers ask for a certain brand of system. I always ask why. In my 20 yrs of doing this I see more failures due poor workmanship and not following the correct procedures during the installation. So I always tell the customers whoever you buy from. Buy the best extended labor warranty you can. And not a inhouse one with the company that is putting it in. example Goodman’s has the assurance warranty thru Goodman.
Which allows you to use whoever you want. So if you’re not happy with the company that puts it in. You can fire them and use someone else. It’s the best protection you can have

That’s what I noticed. Nine hours of labor @ 95.00 per hour plus 40% markup. The entire bill was marked up 40% but was listed under the unit.

It was a mark up on materials. Pretty standard. A contractor always marks up materials. They have to order, receive and transport. That’s takes time and effort. As well as they are usually getting a discount as a contractor. 99% of all contractors make up material costs
