  • Based in Cumberland Maryland, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad runs excursions through the Allegheny Mountains to Frostburg Maryland. The line is the current home of the former C&O 1309, a 2-6-6-2 "Mallet" and was one of the last steam locomotives built by Baldwin. According to the WMSR website it should be on the head end of the Frostburg Flyer Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, so we headed to Cumberland on a Friday morning to get a look at it. Things don't always work out the way we planned though LOL. Tracks and Yaks in Frostburg offers rail bike tours on the trackage, and their morning ride from Frostburg to Cumberland includes a return ticket to Frostburg on the Flyer. So come on along and let's see what is going on in Cumberland.

The same exact thing happen to me today. They made up for it with an all day cab ride!

Well that is a good tradeoff! I did get to ride behind 1309 in February wearing her C&O livery on the Frostburg Flyer winter service.
Interestingly I messaged WMSR yesterday about what days she was scheduled for the Flyer in October to catch her at Helmstetter's with fall color and they said Wed to Sun. 🥴. Was there much color on the mountain yet?

Why is the Cumberland train not a steam train?

1309, the steam loco that had been in service developed cylinder/piston issues in Dec 2023 on a Polar Express train and has been in the shop. Parts for an 80 year old locomotive are not an off the shelf item lol so it has been a slow process getting her back into shape. Their other steam engine is in the process of a major rebuild. Hopefully 1309 will be back on the rail's in time for this year's fall foliage trains and polar express trains. You can follow their Facebook page to find out when the thunder comes back to the mountain!
