  • Can budget 308 deer ammo run with the big boys? Winchester Deer Season XP 150-grain is available at my local WalMart, and it's perfectly capable of causing catastrophic organ rearrangement. In this 20% ballistics gel test at 100 yards, the polymer-tipped projectile managed to carve a 13-inch-long permanent cavity that maxed out at 1-3/4" wide. Come see for yourself.

    Deer Season XP is one of my favorites. I use the .223 64 grain for varmints and coyotes, 350 Legend 150 grain for hogs. Both have been very effective. I don't use them in 450 Bushmaster as they are so expensive, I use the Hornady Black 250 grain. Luckily I saw your videos on the Winchester ammo for 350 Legend and bought hundreds and hundreds of rounds when they were 19 bucks and change a box.

      You'll see soon that this load worked well for us. It even worked better at long range than close; we were center-punching steel targets out to 500 meters. I hope it works as well in yours.

      I noticed that as well, but my observation is that the rifles sling mount is just on the edge of the sand bag, which with rear force of recoil the sling mount will cause barrel jump and effect accuracy.

    Love the extreme point bullets from winchester and browning. (Yes I know winchester loads brownings ammo) The only way I have gotten better performance from a bullet is making the leap to using ELD Match and A tip bullets. After using both of those last season, im not going back to “hunting” ammo again.

    Looks sufficient for varmints and the small Texas deer around me. Picked a box or two of it up in 243 when it was unobtainium. Still had some Hornady 100 grain btsp's which did great but also fragmented inside the deer, still had a pass through with the core though. Winchester really should've put a cannelure to help keep the core from separating.

    • @maccaspope2275
      @maccaspope2275 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does it really matter if it fragmented if it still penetrated? Fragmentation can actually be a good thing in the sense that it generally destroys more tissue

    • @rileyneufeld7001
      @rileyneufeld7001 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maccaspope2275 No it doesn't if you're shooting varmints but if I'm going to harvest an animal like a deer I don't want to destroy the whole right side of the animal and have to trim alot of bloodshot meat from it. It will work just fine if it's all you have available. Just be super patient and get perfect shot placement to minimize damage.

    My mate runs them in his 7mm 08. Does a good job on Red deer within 300 yards with a hit in the beard basket.
    However 50% of the time there is no exit hole. It can make for hard tracking without a blood trail. However the animal never makes it far from the point of impact.

    • @SocialRegressive
      @SocialRegressive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the same sort of report I heard from hunters using the 350 Legend Deer Season XP load. No exit wound, but unless the shot went weird, the animal dropped dead almost immediately.

    Not controlling the fore end of the rifle isn't the way to do it. You must always master the rifle by grasping the fore end to eliminate the huge groupings. I've been professionally trained by the usmc and they always stressed the importance of having a good hold on the fore end to solidify the gun to the sniper. The fundamentals of marksmanship are a time proven method and a stable sand bag in front of your left hand is critical. Having the gun jumping all over the place is no good as well as keeping the guns movement to a bare minimum is critical. Carlos Hathcock and Jim Land seen to it the right way.

    • @supercomp65
      @supercomp65 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based on my experience with the same product line in 223, I fully expected the results seen here. Inconsistent seating depth, inconsistent crimp, and when broken down and weighed, inconsistent powder charges. For the vast majority of deer hunting, it'd probably work just fine but it's no precision round by any means.

    • @nikos6220
      @nikos6220 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@supercomp65 puh, that sounds pretty sad. With the level and quality of automation available to a large manufacturer, this pretty much comes down to not caring.

    I think it would be an interesting project to convert that rather heavy setup into a more reasonable hunting rig (lighter, but good stock,
    Iighter scope) on a budget. I would expect a 3-9 scope + more lightweight Boyd's/stocky's sock, make your original stock less flexible, or used stock?

    Bad bullets'! Shot a doe with the 308 150grn at 25 yards and it just ice picked her with no expansion. Front shoulder shot that dropped her to her knees and she got up and then took off but not very fast and I could tell she was hurt. No blood trail!
