Toeing the line between “there’s too much stuff introduced” and “there’s too much stuff not explained” is what this show does so well. Episode 1 is full of 10 different things you know nothing about and the show has decided to explain them at their own pace - I love it.
And by the end it all comes together so perfectly
And I greatly enjoy and appreciate how the characters actually stay in contact and share valuable information, instead of not realistically informing your allies of life changing information.
I think that's a very generous interpretation. I'd say there is definitley too much. It was made essentially with the idea that if you were watching it, you would have already seen the 2003 version. So it speedruns through things that were already covered in 2003. I think later on it gets better but that first section where it has a direct comparison to 2003 isn't nearly as good as 2003, especially the "fusion" (for lack of a non-spoiler description) storyline.
@@Eeeeerisssss Agreed. Brotherhood rushes through the really storyline and skimps on properly establishing alchemy in the early episodes. Also, due to the extra story added for episode 1, the moments in Leore which originally served to dramatically introduce Ed's automail, Al's body, and their dark past now feel quite repetitive and unnecessary as they've already been revealed.
While it's a fantastic series overall, this aspect is probably FMAB's greatest flaw.
@@Eeeeerisssss I mean, as someone who consumed the original multiple times on Adult Swim (and whose English 111 course taught a lesson on the Liore eps from the OG series), I’d have to say I’m unqualified to make this point on my own. I have too much prior knowledge to know if it does this well or not.
Which is why I pulled on the experiences of my wife and several friends who hadn’t seen the OG who wrapped up the first episodes of this “intrigued and confused, but ready to watch more” - which is precisely the balance I’m suggesting the show strikes.

It's not my favorite but I think it carries a sheer quality of writing especially towards the end that I just can't help but appreciate. It's definitely in my top 10 for sure, but personal preference wise not my #1

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood can be a little confusing at the start, but this is due to the creators expecting you watched the 2003 version.
Overall Brotherhood is the more faithful adaptation of the manga and better
FMAB was created as a love letter to the OG fans so they sped up the initial stuff. It's always crazy to me how many people watch brotherhood before the original and then get annoyed that things don't make sense. It'd be like watching any show's season 8 and then having no idea who the characters are or what's going on.
This was also created for the original audience. Show expect audience to don't know stuff from go and pick up stuff as episodes goes.
And no. It's not like watching season 8 of an ongoing series. It's not even comparable.@@HouseMDaddict

There's a reason why the early episodes of Brotherhood seem to be so fast paced. When FMA: Brotherhood was released, the animation studio assumed that most people have already watched the original FMA 2003 anime. So they rushed to get to the point at which FMA 2003 departed from the manga. That's why I usually recommend that you watch the first 25 episodes of FMA 2003, then continue on with episode 10 of FMA: Brotherhood. Many of the early arcs and character development hit harder in the original FMA 2003.
The reason there are 2 adaptations of FMA is because during the airing of FMA 2003, the anime caught up with the manga around episode 25 (This is the reason why filler episodes were used in older anime). So the studio decided to continue ahead of the manga and made their own non-canon storyline. FMA: Brotherhood was made to adapt the canonical continuation of the manga.
Really should've started with the first few episodes from the OG anime, those are a far better introduction than FMA:B, eventho FMA:B is better later on.
Omg I thought the whole time that the original FMA was a departure from the original writing. But that ending… had a continuation? In what world? 😂
This is not really a good argument. Brotherhood is fast paced because the manga is extremely fast paced in the beginning. The only thing they cut is Mustang vs Ed, Yoki's episode, Greed gang vs Al and their small shenanigans and Izumi fixing a toy. FMA03 starting is not good. It completely breaks every rule of the world they set up in the previous episodes for the sake of shock value. FMAB first few episodes are like only 20% faster than the manga's pacing
Now if only GRRM would finish Song of Ice and Fire so they could do this with Game of Thrones

I think FMA is talked about less because its an instant classic. Kinda like Carter said, its so impactful after your first watch. Not necessarily a favorite of mine either but without a doubt unforgettable.
And there are two version of it. I still like the first one with shambala.
omg i agree sm with carter! i personally like how they had introduced episode 1. it's just my personal preference but i enjoy it when shows are written this way. to me, it's more effective in building intrigue and making the audiences want to know more about the story and characters. it's definitely what happened to me when i first watched the show. what's crazy about fmab is that it's so good at building suspense, and as a viewer, it makes u feel more invested in following the events. the music scores of the show as well! crazy good!
As a sub only watcher FMA is the only anime I’d ever watch in dub highly recommend
dbz and mob psycho also have excellent dubs even tho for the most part i watch sub. aot too at times although i feel like some of the lines are a bit off
FMA and Cyberpunk are the only anime that's dub over sub. just lends itself really well to english for some reason

i personally think mha, naruto, mob psycho fall under peak dub but fmab is def in the upper tiers

FMA originally came out in 2003, but had to create its own ending due to the manga being unfinished. Brotherhood came out in 2009 faithfully adapting the manga(and with some of the most consistent high quality animation ever). Because the original FMA exists and aired just 6 years prior, Brotherhood moves at a very fast pace through its early episodes. Most people were already familiar with some of the story and characters.
Episode 1 of Brotherhood is also filler actually. In general it's much easier to follow from episode 2 onward which are the real story.
I like the original one better than brotherhood.. I'm a bit disappointed they skipped the original and straight to go brotherhood. But as long as they stick to subtitle, I'll watch them.
I've been waiting for the fmab reactions ever since I heard they watched it on their Patreon, gotta say this is easily my favorite anime of all time.
It's definitely a fantastic anime. Upon rewatch last year tho it dropped a few spots for me because of the writing choices. The author took a lot of artistic lisence with convenient and borderline impossible coincidences

Strap in. I dont know why nobody says it but this is obviously the direct inspiration for AOT. You'll see. This is imo not my favorite (AOT), but it is the best anime ever created, absolutely deserves the praise. Actually almost done with my second rewatch as we speak, this video was a surprise.
Edit: had no clue so many people didn't notice all the similarities. I binged FMAB to learn more about how to write manga as im creating my own, and every episode i wrote down clear inspirations for AOT, heres juat a few i wrote down.
•Amestris is literally surrounded by walls.
•The German aesthetic is obvious
•Each story has the declaration of war scene
•Both MC's end up dating another character in the ending
•The way homunculi are created/born is quite literally the same way titans and shifters are
•In episode 46 theres some guy i cant remember the name of who's been missing and he shows up eating pie, same as that annie scene
•The ishvalins and their special "powers" might've inspired the ackermans
•The literal year both stories take place is basically the same
•The two brothers trying to change the world thing
•FMA and AOT have a similar location where characters go (the paths or the door of truth thing)
•It's not a basement like in aot but there's some notes and stuff the cast goes to find, kinda like the basement
•The way Greed lives in Ling might've inspired bert haunting armin
•Lady Armstrong is literally erwin smith
•The "monster is made from humans" thing
Thats just a few, i wrote down tons of notes while watching, and yeah I already know about the other stories that influenced AOT, but yeah, as i said. FMAB is the best anime, but AOT is my favorite, as they're both very similar stories with similar worlds. Both 10/10's. Go watch and pay attention.

To this day i wish there was a version that combined both versions of fma (minus the filler of 2003's) so the early episodes dont feel as fast paced.

This is the only anime I prefer the dub to the sub. Also one of the best stories in anime. The author actually has a solid understanding of real alchemy and there are tons of hidden references, lore and philosophy.
This is a masterpiece! And whichever you choose either Sub or Dub it's gonna be a good ride.
I was gonna suggest episode 1 and 2 to get the bigger picture right away but I guess you'd appreciate more separately seeing how some people felt the first episode was 2 much

By the way for the first episode it is like a recap for 2003 version of Fullmetal Alchemist. Actuallay starting from second episode it will go more understandble
It is not at all a recap, and is an anime original episode. It was specifically designed to get people interested in the story.
The second episode, while great, really throws viewers into the deep end without showing them what the rest of the series will be like. The manga itself doesn't even start with that whole story, and prepares the reader with the brief Lior arc.
Some of the best stories are the ones that refuse to hold your hand every step along the way. As a result, the audience is immediately immersed and wants to learn more, even after getting some of the answers that were initially asked. This is how Star Wars Episode IV captured its audience and set up a pathway for the prequels 20 years later.

I absolutely LOVE the fighting in this, not just the alchemy but the way that the villains are intelligent and resourceful. It makes the fights so much more edge-of-your-seat. Sometimes the villains are dumb throwaways for the main character to defeat easily and sometimes they're traumatized ex-soldiers who have all the training and instinct. Can't wait to see the rest of your watch!

Oh man this is one of the best anime’s of all time yall are in for a treat! People compare it to AOT cause the writing is similar or the story or themes but because this was the show before AOT was a thing! This was the anime you recommended to not anime enjoyer telling them “you might not like anime but you’ll like this show” type shit. Just truly amazing journey yall have went on I haven’t watched much of it but ive converted many of my friend into watching anime and it’s definitely worth it and exciting.

I'm so glad you started Fullmetal Alchemist! It's one of my favorite shonen ever. It's great and unlike other shonen of its time, its story is very condensed and tightly-paced. The plot points never wander and unfold organically to present you with the story's bigger picture. Plus, the power structure and mechanics of the world directly correlates with the story's ethical questions and conflicts.
Listen guys, I'm a sub watcher all the way. HOWEVER, this show's dub just hits like you're watching a cartoon from back in the day. I'm just saying that kinda adds to the entire atmosphere of the show. Definitely give it a good try! (My favourite voice change is by far Mustang's)

Although not confirmed, the transmutation circle Freezer has on his hand might be carved out of his own skin, because any ink might get smudged by the gloves or by sweat. Not a lot of alchemists make permanent transmutations on their skin because it's an ever evolving science for them. What you make permanent on your skin might be obsolete/considered weak alchemy in the future. And permanent transmutations on skin are coded equations; even if you copy them on your skin, if you have no knowledge how it works, you can't produce the same results.
I'm so used to the Dub that the Sub sounds cursed. I legit can't listen them without hearing the Dub voices in my head.

This is the one anime where it wouldn't be a bad thing to watch the English dub. The voice actors did a phenomenal job.
Wow watching this subbed makes me relize how good the dub is. The translation and the emotion is so high quality on the dubbed.

Nice to see you guys doing the subs, since most people don't. There are some really iconic voices in the dub, but I find a lot of the dialogue clunky. Still, it's one of the two anime series where I'd consider the dub at least on equal footing with the subs, the other being Gurren Lagann.

i recommend the dub for this one the emotion in the actors fits a bit better in my opinion, and there's some things that feel heavier bcuz of how their said in relation to the soundtrack in the dub vs the sub they do rush thru some arcs in the beginning but i think that's cuz the original started canon and then went into whatever the original wanted to do while this reboot version is entirely canon with some lesser components of some arcs watered down or cut out to focus on the main storyline later on

i just think this anime is so well written and plotted that it's impossible to deny its quality. the way the plot moves forward and how information gets revealed to the characters and us the viewers, it keeps the audience asking questions and engaged with the story. it rarely if ever lingers too long in any location and there's a lot of fun character interactions and pairings that rival the best stuff in shows like Game of Thrones

Whether you watch it in sub or dub, I'll enjoy watching the reactions either way. There is a lot of information for sure, and it can be easier to pick it up when its in dub and you don't have to focus on reading a ton while watching what's happening on screen. The dub for this show is actually really good too, so its a viable alternative. 💙 This episode also feels pretty loaded, because the show was meant to start on episode 2, but they wanted an episode to draw viewers in and introduce what to expect during the course of the show itself, so we got this as the 'official' episode one.

My second anime I ever watched after AOT. The way it mixes religion, racism, war, science and mythology is unmatched.
Also one of the rare animes where the English dub is very good too.
Congrats on reacting to one of the most iconic and best anime FMB. .Both language did amazing job for voicing ..I recommend in Japanese dub since I'm used to it but in English dub pretty decent too

The first episode has a lot because this was a pilot episode for the show. Back when pilot episodes were essentially elevator pitches to the public being like “listen up this is what the story is about we threw a bunch at you stay tuned.”
It went out of stile with anime more recently. The first few episodes now kind of show “what the show is about” instead of shoving it all in your face in 20 minutes.
Like jjk, first episode we learn of curses, he eats the finger then, Gojo shows up… episode two pulls that along with a cool fight and telling us “this show is about fighting, curses, and our main character trying to figure out how to get out of this finger problem.” And goes from there on a wild ride.
This show does that in the first episode… because that’s what everyone did then even sitcoms in America. I’m kinda glad it’s going out of style. It helps with story progression and burnout
The dubbed is WAYYYYY better than sub in this anime, this is coming from a person who watched all of one piece subbed.

When it comes to anime, sub all the way for me but this is one of those where the English dub is actually better.
Keep in mind FMA Brotherhood was a remake of FMA, a remake just a few years apart. Brotherhood is the definitive version by the author, since the original ran out of manga like how Game of Throne ran out of books.
One of a handful of anime with a good English dub. +1 for the dub if you haven't decided yet. 🤞

Just watch it in sub lol. There is no point in trying the dub when yall clearly have a bias. Its okay to prefer one over the other but why tease the dub when yall are instantly gonna say the dub is trash and complain about it the whole video? It just doesnt make sense to act like yall will actually give it a fair shot just to please some viewers lol

Guys!! The reason why it seems like you've been dropped on episode 40 is because this first episode is actually filler. It is canon to the anime but it wasn't in the manga. It all makes more sense from episode 2 onwards
