The ghost woman is perfectly played by Akiko Kitamura, famous Japanese choreographer. Kurosawa had previously done a CGI scene and disliked how it looked. So, he hired a seasoned dancer to walk as if she wasn’t hindered by physics, and the slight movement of her “tripping” has been interpreted as either an uncanny attempt to engage with the viewer (or the other man in the room) or also as a weirdly subtle way to let us see her face a bit. It is reported that she actually had nightmares upon seeing her finished scene. Attagirl, works so good she scares herself!
Yeah, I think regardless of sound design, this scene is amazingly creepy from a visual perspective alone. It's such a simple but very unsettling concept
Your legs become paralyzed and as a consequence you fall, and your pure reaction is to seek a safe haven. This is what would happen to many people upon seeing this.
We're used to ghost scenes ending quickly and this one goes on and on. Unpredictable, too. This is part of the reason why it got me, even though I'm used to horror movies.
Actually probably works better in the film's favour tbh. The ghosts represent death of real life, and the internet's part in that tragedy. A ghost being pretty, otherworldly pretty, is sort of the perfect representation of influencer culture and the attempt to always look stunning on the internet.
1:44 some people are finding this funny how the ghost seemingly nearly trips But not gonna lie, if there was a creepy ghost lady walking towards me, the LAST thing I'd wanna see her do is that That is so unnerving and creepy, cause its not something you'd see a person do when walking The ghost almost looks normal in this scene, she's standing firm like a regular human and there's nothing particularly striking that gives off huge red flags (obviously aside from the fact there's a creepy woman silently standing and staring at you) Then she's starts walking, at first it seems fine, almost too elegantly. But then she nearly trips and moves incredibly creepy as her body slumps and sways elegantly It's terrifying
Yeah also from my first watch I dont ever recall interpreting that fall as her tripping (that interpretation hasnt crossed my mind until I read these TH-cam comments). I always thought that was intentional from the actress and director, as if to show this being isnt human at all. I'd also like to say, the fact that she falls *and then* bounces back in such a smooth, seamless fashion is so unnatural. So perfect and graceful... So other worldly
The walk just isn't scary to me but the face looks a bit uncanny, it looks like her face is a realistic drawing rather than a real face its that still emotionless face that gets me a bit
Oh yeaaah, that's the stuff. I've seen this a few months ago, this clip I mean, and was like "naah, I'm not watching this" But I know who I'm gonna watch this with.
Its interesting seeing this scene *after* the documentary "The J-Horror Virus" because I never knew this was actually INSPIRED by "Scary True Stories" by Norio Tsuruta, which came out a whole 10 years before. Check it out if you get a chance! Its the segment called 'The Gymnasium In Summer', I believe
I mean, a regular mortal human wouldn't be fooled by that couch trick. Why's he think it'd work on a ghost? 😂Can't they literally see through solid objects?
This is totally normal when a person gets scared of seeing something that should be unreal, most people would freeze if they saw something like that, and I doubt you wouldn't freeze if you saw something like that.
I thought I would get scared but no maybe because I already played a bunch of Fatal frame games, some ghost in there behave very similar to this if not scarier.
It's been a while since I did this but I just downloaded the movie and cut this scene from it to do the sound redesign. I didn't alter the visuals in any way. This video is just for my own portfolio but I've noticed a substantial trickle of views over the last few months, which is probably due to a combination of the original scene not being available on youtube and also Spikima's viral video analysing this particular scene.
I don't get why it is considered the scariest scene of asian horror movies, there are many much more terrifying scenes than this, while this one is actually a bad one in my opinion
A video i saw explained the exact reason i loved this scene and why it's so brilliant, it looks human but the way it moves, it isn't, you don't know what it is but you know to he afraid

That's badass....
Idk what it is about this that just instilled upon me this uncomfortable fear but God damn didn't expect to be scared by someone doing the staky leg

It’s a great use of uncanny valley

I can fix her❤
Down bad for a ghost woman doing the stanky leg, we are one and the same
Fix yourself first.
The vibration over him screaming was a good touch, they could've passed that off in the actual film.
but the female ghost face is kind of pretty
