I’m Vietnamese and for decades I grew up watching my family eat this delicacy. I never could get myself to try it. My White American husband, who respects all cultures, has tried it and enjoyed it. I still can’t try it myself. We all don’t have to like or agree on the same things. It’s totally okay. There is no need to feel bad or be mean to one another for having different feelings and opinions.

It's actually pretty tasty especially the broth when mixed with vinegar and a bit of salt . The yolk is creamy but I can never get used to eating the duck itself.

I think the reason why a lot of people are shocked at this is that most people grew up with the convenience of not preparing livestock ourselves. That's why a lot of people waste food. They don't carry the guilt of preparing the animal and cherishing every bite of it.

Pig's brain is delicious, we eat it in Viet Nam too, remember you need to remove all the blood veins before preparing it. I recommend to fry it with egg & spring onions, you can search how to make it on youtube, fried egg with pig's brain is nutritious & delicious, remember to season it too lol.

It’s really interesting, in the west, you eat a duck egg, that’s fine, you eat a cooked duck, that’s fine. But when it’s in between the two, it becomes a problem. I find it really strange, but intriguing.
I think the shocking part is eating the whole animal. Usually westerners only eat parts of an animal at a time. You can totally say that a food is not for you. But when you use words like “disgusting” or “gross”, you’re putting the other person down and making a judgement on someone else’s food that is designed to make them feel bad. For all those who have not eaten this: Balut is specifically the Filipino term for it. Other Asian cultures do have it, but Balut seems to be the term that really caught on the most and has the most diaspora. That being said, all Filipinos eat it differently! Some do not eat them very developed, some do. As a first-gen Filipino American, I have always depended on my parents to determine what to be eaten and what isn't as my parents never ate them with the embryo very developed. Some people do and eat it whole, some don't or only eat some parts. They also eat it with different additions like herbs, a sprinkle of salt, vinegar (Filipinos have lots of different kinds of vinegar), or plain. As ours are never super developed, it just looks like a hardboiled egg that got its yolk a little overcooked and a few "discolored" parts. It looks a little strange, but it's nothing you don't get over. I say this as a person that wasn't really hyped to eat it the first time. Once you get over the bias you have and mental barriers, it's fine! It tastes like hardboiled egg mixed with the best chicken broth ever. I understand it's not everyone's thing, but if you can try it out with someone who is experienced in eating it, do so! It tastes really good. Just realize: Everything you love now was once strange, new, and scary.

That’s what Balut is. It’s a delicacy. Although I do wonder how they get Balut Eggs… obviously the duck is cooked. But do they kill it first? And then boil it? Like freeze the eggs and then cook them? Cuz just dropping batches of eggs with formed life inside into boiling water seems pretty cruel. Then again people do that to seafood and insects ALL the time. Cruel harsh world. I think the shocking part is eating the whole animal. Usually westerners only eat parts of an animal at a time. You can totally say that a food is not for you. But when you use words like “disgusting” or “gross”, you’re putting the other person down and making a judgement on someone else’s food that is designed to make them feel bad. How is the other person supposed to feel after you’ve said a food that they’ve grown up eating is “gross”?
Now I know you said that you personally find it gross, and made it clear it was your opinion. But even using the word “gross” is unnecessary, because it’s still a judgemental statement. It’s like going to someone else’s home for dinner and then telling them that you find their food gross. But then saying like “I’m just saying my opinion!”. The issue with saying that about cultural foods is that it adds to the stigma of that cultures food even if you didn’t mean it. For all those who have not eaten this: Balut is specifically the Filipino term for it. Other Asian cultures do have it, but Balut seems to be the term that really caught on the most and has the most diaspora. That being said, all Filipinos eat it differently! Some do not eat them very developed, some do. As a first-gen Filipino American, I have always depended on my parents to determine what to be eaten and what isn't as my parents never ate them with the embryo very developed. Some people do and eat it whole, some don't or only eat some parts. They also eat it with different additions like herbs, a sprinkle of salt, vinegar (Filipinos have lots of different kinds of vinegar), or plain. As ours are never super developed, it just looks like a hardboiled egg that got its yolk a little overcooked and a few "discolored" parts. It looks a little strange, but it's nothing you don't get over. I say this as a person that wasn't really hyped to eat it the first time. Once you get over the bias you have and mental barriers, it's fine! It tastes like hardboiled egg mixed with the best chicken broth ever. I understand it's not everyone's thing, but if you can try it out with someone who is experienced in eating it, do so! It tastes really good. Just realize: Everything you love now was once strange, new, and scary.

That’s what Balut is. It’s a delicacy. Although I do wonder how they get Balut Eggs… obviously the duck is cooked. But do they kill it first? And then boil it? Like freeze the eggs and then cook them? Cuz just dropping batches of eggs with formed life inside into boiling water seems pretty cruel.
Then again people do that to seafood and insects ALL the time. Cruel harsh world. Especially considering we’re capable of compassion, and it’s proven most of those creatures register and respond to pain with fear.
