    The problem is that lanes for people/ants don't have to be perfect. If two people or ants bump into each other it's not as catastrophic as if two cars bump into each other.

    • @SparktehFox

      Collective "Me First" does play a larger part in drawing than walking though. Even if there are those few who gather in a spot and refuse to move when others come by, in general people walking will give way to others with a simple "excuse me" whereas drivers will cut eachother off, slam on the breaks to spite the person behind them and bogard lanes to stay in the front. If more people would just go, "hey, I'm in the way," things might go smoother.

      I think we move out of the way when we have a real person in front of us, when we're surrounded by metal cars we don't actually see other human beings and somehow we become self centered.

    I feel like the focus is entirely off in this video. The problem with cars is they can only turn by rolling, they have to follow fixed rules, they can't squeeze by one another, and they have limited space. All these things are opposite for walking.

      6 6 Your point is the only one here that doesn’t make sense. The argument the video was making made sense and was very clear! But, as others have said before me, it is a concept that exists solely and theory and cannot logistically be applied with humans and cars. Do you not see how many times one of the ants walks over another? Stop throwing insults and being angry for a second and instead try to listen to others’ arguments around you.

    • @kimmc8397
      @kimmc8397 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@davidperrier6149 People walking cause lots of traffic jams. Like the video said, crowds of people are made up of individuals all looking out for their own self-interest. Sure they form some natural lanes like ants which is interesting, but they don't let each other through the way ants do so you still get big blockages.

    • @Rogue_Art
      @Rogue_Art 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yeah exactly. If you're walking and you're in a large crowd (think SFO/LA/NYC/Tokyo street crossings), unless a physical obstruction blocks the exits, you will ALWAYS have some ability to move in a large crowd. If you're at a music festival, you can even exit the crowd while the songs are playing and everyone is dancing simply because you can change your geometry and optimize your path. A car can only really go forwards and backwards at an angle and can't change its geometry and must also obey road laws--it cannot go in the middle of a forward and backward coming lane for example because of safety concerns. What applies to ants might apply to crowds, but not to linear, fast-moving cars.

    • @paulverse4587
      @paulverse4587 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      While it seems unintentional and a mishap, they do exchange important information "bonking their heads" about their status, task, where they came from and if there's more work to be done there, etc. Ant traffic seems chaotic because it also organizes where the ants are going, and that takes communication.

    There's so much more at play here, with dynamics you hardly touched upon. 1) All ants are about the same size. But the human is a fraction of the size of his vehicle, so his footprint on a highway is 10x what it should be. 2) Ants don't travel very fast. Humans; however, can race at speeds 5x faster than they can run which is probably not a safe idea. 3) Ants have an armor exoskeleton to protect them if they screw up and run into other things. Humans, travel in very fragile shells by comparison which can't withstand anything but the slowest of collisions without sustaining damage. 4) Ants don't have dozens of traffic laws to obey; meaning, they can climb right over others in their path or go off-road whenever they see fit. Humans don't have any of these options, being heavily restricting to a flat surface that must be mostly paved to be navigable.

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      While agree that comparisons can and are being made, I think the fact that cars are not part of our bodies plays a big role in the available movements we can make. With large groups of people, we can organize ourselves as you said, and if someone is in front of us, we just move to the side. Now try doing the same with a car. How long does it take? And how many other cars have you just affected while trying to avoid a collision yourself?

    • @Woodledude
      @Woodledude 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Exactly. Walking is better, and funny enough, we need cars because everyone has cars, and we've built cities to accommodate cars. There are actually two solutions to this problem: Less cars, or smarter cars.

    What a stupid comparison. We don't get into traffic jams when we're walking either, and walking traffic moves far faster than car traffic. But of course our bodies are squishy, don't mind a bump or two, touching another pedestrian doesn't damage him, and we can maneuver our bodies with far more precision and freedom of movement than cars. Also, if two ants or pedestrians collide nobody dies, can't say the same for cars, so we need more precautions, and that means slower more structured traffic.

    • @MrMarinus18

    Main problem with traffic is how many people are actually short sighted and dont actually know the size of their cars in the lane, and so there's greater distances between the cars. Put everyone on a motorbike, (or on foot) and you see how people interweave between one another better and keep the flow moving much faster. ants move at a walking pace and hitting one another doesn't hurt. Cars can kill with speed, thats a huge difference.

    3:27 -- *You are absolutely right! If there's congestion, you should wait until your lane ends to merge!* You actually end up doing a disservice to traffic when you merge early. It is better to have one distinct merge point than multiple ones. It means there will be just one point (rather than multiple points) forcing drivers to brake. It also makes the merging more predictable; drivers will be less prone to unnecessary braking before the merge point. Unfortunately, not many drivers are aware of this, and road signs/markings only encourage drivers to merge early. That all said, if you're in free flow conditions, you are usually better off merging relatively early. Either way, the goal is not to force drivers to brake any harder than necessary, if at all.

  • @Tyneras

    I think you missed something. Those ants are all working together because they are unified. Humans in unified groups also do this and work together to minimize problems by sacrificing personal advantage.
    Now, if you put thousands of different ant colonies (who have no shared identity) next to each other and forced them to use the same traffic lanes, you'd see traffic jams... right before the ants all tried to kill each other, because ants are pretty direct about competition like that.

      Yeah, but you could argue that we're all part of the same unified group since we're all slaves to the same economy. More efficient economy brings more wealth for everyone (more or less, not going to go into the rabbit hole that is wealth inequality), as such, we do have a common goal, except our ego doesn't allow us to see that. We're all told that we're the special ones, that I deserve this or that, that I need this, I, I, I... We only look at ourselves instead of looking at the larger picture of interlinked cogs in a system much bigger than the sum of its parts...

      Good point, but in order to achieve a greater efficiency in all the different parts of the economy, we need to stop being mindless, egoistical and disobedient automatons and start understanding the sea that we're all floating in together. After all, aren't we just as much of automatons as ants? Just with more complex algorithms and the egoistical notion of free will. Which depending on your philosophical interpretation of quantum mechanics is completely screwed as a concept.

    • @nyanSynxPHOENIX
      @nyanSynxPHOENIX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People can, just not Americans. In many countries it is the norm. I don't think it is people being scared, I think it is a combination of ignorance, different interpretations of signage, and reckless drivers. Even in incredibly low traffic areas that I've driven through in the US, many people REFUSE to let other cars in front of them, which makes merges so much messier than they need to be.
      But I do think driving anxiety might have something to do with it, at least partially. For me, based on my experience with drivers I have ridden with and other cars around me, I get to anxious that I won't be allowed to merge if I don't get in the lane I need to be in miles before necessary. This may be just my own personal anxiety, or it might be caused by the places I've lived, but I still think that isn't the main problem.

    Both ants and walking humans have something in common - their entire bodies are linked with their brain directly and there is continuous sensory and motor integration of all parts of their being. This is not the case with cars. We have no sensory control over cars, very limited motor control over cars. And cars are roughly 1-dimensional motion. If we were to advance cars to sort of Transformers-like control, pretty sure we would have lesser traffic jams, though a lot more clanging and bruising. The sensorimotor integration also happens with self-driving cars communicating with others in immediate vicinity.

There's more space for them AND yes, they are all on one same mission; members of each colony have the same destination, thus there are no huge amounts of left or right turns, or U-turns, etc, etc. Our streets and destinations are way more varied and complex. Ego plays a role, sure, but I don't see that as the cause of traffic.

      Like what was said in the video, if we drive slower (so we have more time to react), this will reduce the 'brake chain', which reduces gridlock.
      Basically if we get a new set of rules to be enforced (slower driving and like, 1.5 meter distance from the vehicle in front of you) we'd probably reduce traffic by a great amount.

If you take the rules by which ants travel and applied them to humans in cars, you'd still have traffic congestion. Because of key features of *cars*, not the way we drive them. Namely, the speed of cars is very high, as is the cost of collisions. This is not true for ants crawling up and down a log. The analogy is in this video is, and Bluespheal has correctly pointed out this fact!

    When I traveled to Busan South Korea I paid particular attention to the traffic. Busan has almost twice the population of Houston crammed into an area half the size. Traffic jams were minimal. When a traffic light turns green, the whole line of cars moves together quickly & when the light turns red the whole line of cars stops. Did not witness one accident in the two weeks I was there. At each intersection, there is a 2 second interval when all lights are red. During that 2 seconds, intersections are FILLED with delivery scooters and bicycles moving as quickly as possible in every direction. It looks chaotic, but again, no accidents or mishaps. The back fender of the last scooter always clears the intersection the millisecond that the next light turns green and the entire line of cars behind that green light moves into the intersection without any hesitation. There's probably about a meter distance between the last scooter fender and the 1st car into the intersection. Koreans drive fast and without hesitation, but they also drive selflessly. It's like they have a hive mentality. They remind me of bees. No one steps out of line and everyone seems to consider the efficiency of the group, even though each person is focused and driven to increase their own efficiency.

      Most jams are caused by cars slowing down unexpectedly and more than they need to. If the car in front begins to break, the car behind must break harder, because it cannot tell if the car in front is going to stop or just accelerate away again. The third car has to break even harder, making the car in position four break harder still.
      Guess how a self driving car will react to the car in front suddenly slowing down? Exactly the same way, because it cannot risk running into it. even if the first car is self-driving, the car behind cannot trust that it will stop in the came distance, because of diferences in tires etc. it *will* brake with a safetly margin. The car behind must do the same, but with les space to do it... there's your jam.
      The daily jams at regular locations are a capacity problem, not a driver problem. If ten cars can pass per minute, then ten cars can pass per minute, regardless of the skill of the driver.
      And self driving cars are a cool idea but completely impractical for anything other than straight-line highway driving.
      In case you missed it; Tesla's fancy pancy driver assist has already caused one death, and that's just an assistent, not even a full self driving vehicle...

      vinny142 it's not just self driving cars, traffic problems could also be solved by proper mass transportation infrastructure like railways like what they have in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
      Despite being one of the most densely populated areas in the world, Hong Kong, Singapore and most cities in Japan got their traffic problem sorted out by using efficient mass transit systems.
      I suppose implementing this in other countries is more difficult because driving a car is more of a status symbol rather than a means of transportation. Also, the Automotive industry have more lobbyists and financial incentive to use fuel inefficient cars in western countries

      Why would a hacker even be involved?
      Self-Driving cars don't need to be connected to a network.
      They just need the software and hardware to detect cars around them and react accordingly, literally no need for a network. The only reason you would be connected to the network is if you somehow install wi-fi into the vehicle, which brings up the question of why would you need to do that when you have a bloody phone and your vehicle is self-driving. At best the only network needed is GPS, and you don't need the net for that. I suppose if you want a map, but that could probably come installed or installed yourself (and if it gets a virus it's literally only you to blame).
      The only way this could even happen is if it PHYSICALLY hacked, and this is much more difficult because it's effectively breaking and entering.

      I'm a bit sceptical to self driving cars, at least unless there is a driver ready to take over, because they can get technical errors. All advanced technology can, and in this case it could cause serious damage

    • @Pulstar232
      @Pulstar232 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      zakosist There is always a driver ready to take over, and I think when a technical error arises, there probably is a safety net of sorts. Maybe automatically drive to the side of the road while sending a distress signal to all nearby vehicles to avoid the car?

    i would have to disagree with your side note about "merging last second is actually better." my reasoning comes directly from your own words. As you said most people tend to think for themselves instead of the good of everyone. Lets say I wanted to merge onto a busy highway using your method. The most likely scenario is i will head to the end, and no one will make space for me to merge. Causing me to stop or slow down, eventually some good person will slow down to let me in, collectively slowing everyone else behind them causing a traffic jam.
    Lets say instead i speed up to the highway speed and observe the highway and look for a slot or space big enough to fit my car, and i then speed up or slow a little to take that spot. No one will need to slow down to let me in.
    If everyone was cooperative, and did use the 'zipper method' i agree it would probably be the fastest. But as you said in this video, people DONT cooperate with each other, thus the other method is the most effective.
    Just cause it looks good on paper, doesn't mean its application will be just as good.

      Esoteric Grave zipper method from a standstill is a myth anyway. Anyone I've heard say people should use the closing lane can't seem to wrap their mind around the fact that if there is no space between the cars to merge at speed (because the reduction came to a standstill) then it will not be a zipper merge but a series of "late merges" (aka cutting people off) which by definition slows traffic.
      If what you need is for the other lane to slow down and make room for you, what you are after is by definition not a zipper merge.

    Maybe I’m just a traffic nerd but I wanted to make a small correction. Bigger roads generally don’t actually make traffic better. Due to humans choosing what they think will immediately be more convenient, we will almost always choose the newly widened road instead of taking the back roads and residential road we might usually use to avoid traffic. Soon the new wider road becomes just as or even more backed up since everyone thinks there will be a smaller car to road space ratio
