"Date Etiquette" is a Coronet Instructional film aimed at teenagers, about proper behavior on a date with the opposite sex. The plot follows four well-behaved and well-groomed high school students. The boys ask the girls on dates to various activities and they demonstrate good manners and what is expected from both a boy and a girl's perspective. This movie is a good example of what were referred to as "social guidance" films in the mid-century. These 16mm films were shown in schools in an attempt to encourage family values and to define gender roles. Evelyn M. Duvall collaborated, she was the head of the National Council on Family Relations.
A teenage boy stands awkwardly in front of lockers. He asks a girl named Alice if she would like to go to the school play with him (00:41). She agrees to the date. They arrange the details. Alice descends her staircase (1:33). Her parents read in the living room, she shows her mother how well-groomed and sharp she looks. The boy rings her doorbell, he is wearing a suit and bowtie (2:15). She introduces him to her parents. He paces nervously while she gets her coat. He engages the parents in conversation about the play, making a good impression. He puts the coat over her shoulders. He moves to walk on the curb side of the street (4:10). They follow an usher into the auditorium. He gets drinks from a table while she politely turns away as he pays for them (4:51). They speak to another couple and make introductions. They exit the play and make plans to go to a diner. They both study the menus and he suggest the hamburger deluxe (6:09). She checks the price of the burger deluxe and orders something of equivalent price. She tells him she will have the chicken salad. He orders for both of them (6:36). They have an awkward silence. She breaks it buy telling him she is having a nice time. They begin to chat and he inquiries about her charm bracelet (7:15). She shows it off and tells him she made it. He studies it and asks more questions. The waitress brings their food. They prepare to leave, he pulls out her chair and places her coat over her shoulders (8:09). He then leaves a tip on the table. They talk outside of her house. He walks away and they wave to each other (9:23). Two teenage boys enter a house, one runs up the stairs. The other flips open a notebook that has a phone number for “Kay” (9:48). He yells up the stairs that they should call her and invite her to the community center on a double date. The other boy comes down the stairs with a tennis racquet. He dials Kay on his rotary phone and invites her to see “Wagon Train” in the movie theatre. She has already seen it, but agrees to volunteer at the scavenger sale (11:00). Teenagers decorate the community center with crepe paper streamers and paper elephants (12:13). Kay dusts an antique lamp. He helps her put up a sign that says “Knick-Knacks.” She leaves to help with refreshments. He notices a list of activities on a bulletin board (14:27). He points to “Bike Trip To Rock Point.” He imagines him, Kay and another couple riding bicycles. He then imagines them grilling hotdogs over a fire at a weenie roast, they climb the bleachers at a baseball game, people swim laps in a pool, they square dance in a rec room, have a picnic outside on a table. He nods and smiles while imaging all of the possibilities for dates with Kay (15:31). The two boys in suits buy movie tickets and enter the theatre with the girls. Him and Kay sit down with bottles of Coca-Cola and talk about things they like to do (16:30). They decide to the weenie roast on a double date.

When she is showing him her charm bracelet she says "I make a lot of my own jewelry" but the captions for the hearing impaired said "I make a lot of my own children." which I found actually more impressive.
Well abortions were harder to come by, back then
Classic. I have seen some funny CC mistakes but that is well up there.
That’s sooo funny…yea well the AI butchered that one !
That Kay is a swell girl. And Nick, while a bit awkward, is an agreeable and considerate guy. It warmed this middle-aged woman's heart when Nick found out, to his surprised happiness, that Kay liked miniature golf and weenie roasts and scavenger sales as much as he did.
These are great tips! I followed them to the queue. The young lady and I are now best friends and she talks to me about all the other guys she's seeing....
If she rejects you, report her for being a communist spy
2:49 I hate those awkward moments of silence when meeting and being around new people. I kind of felt that moment and was glad he came up with a topic to talk about. I love these old informational films. They can really be swell for all age groups and time periods for sure.
Love Danny's bow tie.
An appropriate day (Valentine's Day) to upload this. :)
THAT'S A GOOD IDEA
Timing is everything! 💖
@bobdobbs9096 glad you made the connection! We often schedule films of interest on "special" days. Next up -- April 1st stay tuned.
@@PeriscopeFilm Figured, & appreciated! It's kind of scary that things like this were made, but that could be said about many of the films in your archive. :)
@@PeriscopeFilm for april fools day
It all makes sense now. Would like to see the whole series.
9:34 starts a second short from 1951 called "What To Do on a Date".
A first date visit to a bookstore/cafe' for a bit is a great place to learn about each other.
These are truly the best of times. Manners, ettiquette, appropriately dressed.....very nice!! On a side note Danny will not be getting a good night kiss on the first date.
Then i think to myself gosh.....ive gotten 🧒 on the first date. Jus sayin. Seriously though, this era was priceless!! 😉
Your use of emojis sure is keen! 😂
Not sure back then was all that different. Not all the kids were that pure 😉😜
thanks for the infomation of the movie glad you like it happy valetines day!
6:36 I was half expecting Danny to order “a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no butter, no lettuce, no mayonnaise, oh, and hold the chicken … between your knees!”
😂😂😂😂😂
This was an amazing was! Times were more simple back in the day!
People were more polite & decent to each other...Girls practiced modesty, something unheard of nowadays! 🇺🇸 😎👍☕
@@lilblackduc7312 They also had cleaner rooms. Now we have girls taking selfies in front of piles of trash and laundry
You got that right . I think I was born about 20 years or so too late....
Well, at least it was in the world of Coronet instructional films. They're really quite fascinating in the way they tend to show a very systematised world of social interaction. We mustn't mistake what these instructional videos portray as to what was actually common practice during the period.
@@Deathmastertx For the sake of argument, let's say 'Coronet films' set a not-so idealistic standard, compared to what was actually common practice during the period. Now, decades later, where are the videos that set today's standard? Movies & music videos?!?! They're crude, vulgar, lacking any moral compass or modesty. Compared to what Coronet depicted, today's examples are essentially declaring, "Throw the meat on the grill & call out the dogs"!!! Today's "common practice" then, is so vile, it isn't worthy of mentioning here.
The second short had a couple of notable pieces missing. It was edited well enough that they wouldn't have been missed if one wasn't familiar with the short already
Great video for Valentine’s Day 😂
If only you could use this in modern times… 😢
Why not? Maybe we can set a trend!
My, how times have changed.
Only the purple hair and nose rings.
Gosh yes! Neat.
I was looking at prices on her menu and I just laughed. All 2 digit numbers and you knew they couldn't be in DOLLARS. Then it hits you that when you see the deluxe sandwich priced at "65" that means 65 CENTS!
Careful you don't want to break the bank!
Wow! These kids had classier, better dates than we do now😳 They were more civilized in that restaurant than the majority of ppl these days.
memories...nice to remember a time when dating was civilized...I grew up during this time...the govt didn't hesitate to tell young people the 'proper' way to act...not that it worked!...when I was out of high school it was the sixties...you know!...the bomb, hippies, Vietnam, demonstrations, 'free love'...all that. The 'proper' behavior here was pretty much abandoned.
Ms. Manners would approve of this film.
This video is so cute
MY MOTHER PAID FIFTY CENTS FOR A HAMBURGER
Weren't those the days!!
@@RoadRunnergarage8570 That's equivelent to 5.60 today....nothings changed.
OH MY GOD LET’S GO SCREAM ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET
When getting married really mean getting married Lol
I just meet the girls at the bedroom window. I make sure the parents fast asleep.
These were times when you dated to get to know someone--- their values, interests, character, etc. focusing on building a real, and deep relationship that would last the test of time. Not dating just to get your rocks off then living together and hoping for the best while you each go on your own selfish ways.
😂
I have to wonder if there's a Tinder date etiquette video now.
There is a video on Tinder dating etiquette. I think it's called "No means NO!"
Yeah, pay the ho when you're done
No need, only one rule: don't sleep with your date before the first date.
Wouldn't get far bc all guys do these days is use you, want sex once and ghost you,or you get ready for hours only to be outside waiting in hot sun, makeup melting off, expensive perfume wasted no show,no call or text saying why or nothing!!!these days just show an Eileen woros story that's wut us women today are feeling like😡😡😡😡🤡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😠🤡💩💩💩😺
I can see most Gen z would bomb this advice today.
Alice and Danny sound more like a contract negotiation than a high school date.
Alice’s parents should have made Danny feel comfortable not the other way around
That was a fun video, thanks 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
I see some of this is outdated but I have used basic rules from this video such as having the masculine lead Etc and Ive never had a bad expirence. Just know what is outdated
Outdated? Like what
Wow….to think datings just swipe right & a “you up?” Nowadays 😫😫😫😫
Yes!!!im55,white fine polite, dress to the nines only to get no texts til midnight, saying "you up?"or "wyd"stupid sh*t I'm so traumatized by dating site free, trying to get to know a guy asking questions, making polite conversations, and outta nowhere they say something like, do you deep thr**t"?SICK SICK MADDENING 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
@@jacquelynsharp9354 yup…..the worlds a different place now. When I was a teenager…we had to dial home Telephones and speak to our crushes. Texting has changed it all. ☹️☹️☹️☹️
I wonder about the dates today. In my day it was a movie and dinner. Are the kids doing the same thing?
Some do. Others prefer to do something outdoors.
They had to go all in with the milk
Danny being polite he walked on curbside. That what Alice said to the policeman when the 1948 Red Ford convertible ran over the curb and slam Danny against the White Oak tree injuring him greatly.
Wait till they find out Danny didn’t wear clean underwear!
😆😂🤣
lolz
really this might be a joke

Western civilization values at mid-20th century.
What do you mean?
@@hf15123 , Just follow the advice in this film and you will be in good shape.
@@bboucharde Ohhh I getcha. Basically be polite, kind and respectful. Its sad that it has to be specified these days.
Oh, now I am feeling nostalgic and I wasn't even born in the 50's. You know what I miss? Good manners. Consideration. Chivalry. Men could be men and women could be ladies and nobody was saying stupid things like "gender is a construct" or " I can order my food! Open my door etc." or " call me by my chosen pronouns". People got way too much time on their hands, and parents who don't want to be bothered. The old days and old ways are the best, especially looking at the sad decay of our country now.
I was born in '71. I feel the same way about the depressing downfall in consideration and chivalry, and I miss the days before all this militant gender/social engineering took hold. I really enjoy these 50s and 40s social guidance films; so many of their messages (should) apply today.
Remember, current society is what you women wanted.

Where's Danny's car? Are they just going to walk there or something? Guys, take note from a woman, we like it when you show up early. It's very appreciated! In my opinion, it shows you're considerate of our time and effort to get ready!
Men nowadays need to take note
Thing's used to be so simple
I think that's what I miss the most. The simplicity. Today in 2024 everything is so complicated. There were just things back then you could count on and were fixed. You didn't have to figure out or think twice about. Now everything is questioned and the complexity resulting from trying to accommodate everybody's freedom and "rights". It's not even male or female anymore but you have to include other combinations of the two. CONFUSING.
@@calvinjackson8110
Things are still simple; if the guy is a 7' tall jacked billionaire.
Yes, things were simpler when women had fewer rights... NOT
The meal with drinks was $1.50, so he tipped the waitress a whopping .15 cents.
I can’t wait to see what Huggbees creates out of this!
I can almost guarantee the teenagers back when this film came out were making fun of it even in the early 1950’s.
Why?
because it's hilarious
This is way before my time, when there was a basic expectation of propriety between men and women. The whole point was to determine overall compatibility, and it seems far less "transactional." Of course, roles were very different, and I'm talking from a guy's perspective.
When I was actively dating in the 90's and 00's, I noticed a lot of women had some kind of "victim" story about how horrible her ex treated her. How unhappy she was and all her life problems. LOL, not attractive on a first date! Then, if you didn't want to date them again, you became the next problem guy.
These days, I can't imagine what younger guys go through.
So even then they still play that card? Nothing has changed
Unintentional MST3K reference at 5:24
MST3K also riffed the second part of this video - it's called "What To Do on a Date." The MST3K episode is 503 with the main movie "Swamp Diamonds."
I’m pretty sure that a weenie roast and taffy pull are code names for… other stuff. 😂
Never did work out with Danny for Alice, but she later met Bob, with whom she went on to invent modern cryptographic protocols and public key encryption.
Danny found uranium on his families property and is glad he didn't marry Alice. He is now 87 with a nineteen year old wife.
Are those prices in dollar at the restaurant???
No, they are prices in cents. 100 cents = 1 dollar; 0.01 dollars = 1 cent.
@@warreneckels4945 Thank you!
The tip he left was only a few coins!
Why do the girls look like they are old enough to be my grandmother?
I know what you mean ..... hair styles for one
@@cynthiahintz1900 Back then short styles were quite popular with young girls, not just with older women.

Two glasses of milk. I can't imagine teens today ordering that with their meal. The country is hooked on sof
t drinks and energy drinks. Another reason why kids weren't obese then.
Milk isn’t great for you, either
this doesn't feel realistic.
Correct
Winnie roast must have been code for another activity back then I suppose.
The audio really needed to be cleaned up. 😕
All these videos are the real deal. Periscope does it that way to Honor the content and Plagiarism of theifs.
@lightdark00 appreciate the feedback -- but we believe in showing these films to the world pretty much as people experienced them back when they were projected in the classroom. That means we don't digitally enhance picture or audio, unless it's really a total mess. : )
@@PeriscopeFilm I'm doubting the audio was in that shape originally.
The audio sounded great to me.
Soo what is the tip on a $0.65 hamburger and a $0.40 chicken salad sandwich? Thank you ma'am the meal was excellent here is $0.20 don't spend it all in one place.
$0.20 would buy a pack of 20 cigarettes and a Choo Choo Bar.

Im55 fine wish i could go on a real date, minus all vulgarity and constant sex talk, jokes, innuendo
And nobody had a clue on sex ed. Whoops...I thought only bad girls got pg and I'm a good girl so WTF? And just in case I gave myself a cocoa douche at the drive in.....
They were VERY knowledgeable about sex. That's why they had a healthy respect for it.
Today we just clap our asses on Tinder. Much easier.
Heterosexuals sure have a lot of rules.
No kiss on the first date? Today, sex on a first date is the norm.
I wish loll
Right. And look at the results!
I always thought it was no sex until the third date unless you were promiscuous by 1980s standards. Now it's probably safer to wait until you're actually married. Amazing how what's old becomes new again.
Yet the data shows that the actual percentage of teen sexual activity has gone down significantly (from 48% to 40% from 2007 to 2017, for example, for the percentage of high schoolers who have ever had sex at all). Teen pregnancy is down. All the signs point towards todays kids being _more_ responsible, not less!!!
The only thing that has gone down is the age at first intercourse. But that aligns with many other aspects of adolescence that are occurring faster, including physical development.
Some good basic advice about social communication in this,. But ordering to the girl's food as well as your own. Yeech! The dark ages.
The bow tie. Making guys look like dweebs since forever. Danny is a bit slow...
This educational movie could not be made in 2023. Too many genders. You need to include everyone today or else social media will not leave you alone.,
Did Danny score? Nah, Danny’s a closeted homosexual.
Third date or later if he wanted to marry her.

I suppose producing a population of feral illegitimate brats is better than practicing self control and truly caring about your date.
