    In this video we visit two amazing locations along the coast of Cornwall: the gorgeous beach at Lantic Bay and the charming town of Fowey. We hiked the steep path to a stunning beach on a perfectly sunny day… and had a chat with the very spoilt cows at the top of the hill with a breathtaking view! Then we visited the fun town of Fowey, which offered lots to do and loads of Cornish charm! Be sure to pay attention so you learn how I determined that I am LARGER THAN THE DEVIL! haha

    Hi Dara & Ian. The beach at Lantic Bay looked so tranquil, it still amazes me that the vast majority of visitors to the UK, will never see sights like this. And all because they can't be bothered to leave London, and see the real beauty of the UK. Cornish Pasties are one of my favourite foods to eat, i absolutely love them. And Bagpuss brings back some wonderfully warm childhood memories for most of us Brits. Everyone knows the magic words Emily used to bring Bagpuss to life... “Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss, old fat furry catpuss. Wake up and look at this thing that I bring. Wake up, be bright, be golden and light Bagpuss, oh hear what I sing"”. And at the end of every episode, the words were, Even Bagpuss himself once he was asleep was just an old, saggy cloth cat Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams But Emily loved him. I'll put a TH-cam link in the reply below to an episode first shown on 03 April 1974. 😉👍

      You've got that right, most overseas tourists won't see the places we visit. The exception is those that we act as tour guides for, which we did in 2019 & 2018. That was great fun and I'm hoping we'll be able to continue doing it in the future.

      @@MagentaOtterTravels The thing is, I suspect no-one travels to the UK for a beach holiday. It may come as a genuine surprise that if the weather is kind you can find some truly wonderful beaches. My favourite is Trebarwith Strand , north Cornwall. I have travelled a fair bit, but the week spent camping with my Dad in a field near to Trebarwith is absolutely priceless to me. So much so, I have taken my family back twice.
      It is not Hawaii, no-one expects Hawaii, but when the sea goes out to reveal the vast stretch of golden sand I am the happy nine year old again. Please spend some time on the South-West coast path, from Boscastle, past Tintagel the views are truly spectacular. Another favourite is Studland bay, Dorset, owned by the National Trust. In fact the whole of the Isle of Purbeck is rather special. Sorry, reminiscing.

    Ok, so Ian had to be promised Cornish ice cream if he ate a pasty, personally I'd prefer the pasty. Yes you do have to get them early in the morning, when they're freshly baked. Personal experience has taught me if you're in the shop after 10-10.30 am you risk a no pasty situation. The views are lovely, I haven't been to Cornwall for years, maybe when it's safe to travel again I'll go back.

Years ago we discovered a really good place (sadly no more, I gather) in a location just outside Looe, and they were nearly always sold out by 1030 or so in the morning! I'll tell you a secret. For our trip in September 2020, my hubby Ian did all the travel planning. I just tagged along for the ride and rarely knew where we were going and what the places were known for! Only after I got home months later would I try to research and learn about the towns. This was very exhausting and difficult for me... and I only scratched the surface. So no, I didn't know about the Daphne DuMaurier connection until after I published the video and people told me about it!
      This summer 2021 I changed my approach. I researched places BEFORE we filmed there... and it worked out much better! My Northumberland videos reflect that new approach, which is why they have so much more historical information in them ;-)
      And I can't wait to edit and publish my Cotswolds series. That is my favourite part of Britain and I hope the series is great!!!

      Cornwall lived up to all the hype of what I had heard. I absolutely loved it!
      As for "route"... that is a funny word. In Britain it is "root" and in America it is both "root" and "rowt". Where I grew up, we might call Route 66 "Root" 66, but then we would say you find a new "rowt" home due to a traffic jam. And then the thing in your home that gives you WiFi signal is ALWAYS a "rowter" everywhere in the US. We never say "rooter" for router. So strange!

      Yeah, I've heard that one too. When I was growing up in California they used to say that dogs could sense that an earthquake was about to happen and would start to cry right before the event. Not sure how true that one is.

    Can't wait to experience your pasty taste-tests!! They look SO good. I wonder what the ingredients are. Did you get different varieties, or are they all basically meat-vege kinds of things? Of course, ice cream is my primary interest, so am glad you let us enjoy that with you both. What a beautiful day weather-wise too. Was the water cold at the beach? Loved the cows too, although they don't seem to be in any danger of tumbling down that steep hill, thank goodness; do they just "know" not to go too near the steep parts, I wonder?? BTW, Dara, will you still do a video a week from today, Christmas Day? I hope so!!

    • @MagentaOtterTravels
      @MagentaOtterTravels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Responding in reverse order: On Christmas Day there will be a special video... not a travel vlog ;-) Yes, I think the cows know not to bother going down the steep slope. They stay on top where the grazing is good. Lazing and grazing... the life of a cow! Speaking of animals on steep slopes, I can't wait to show the mountain goats in North Devon... they were FEARLESS!
      The water was a bit cold for my liking. Brits would swim in that water, but not me. Not to mention, we didn't have time for swimming. Too much to cram into the day when you are on a action-packed holiday with Ian Sandland! haha
      Pasties have a very flaky crust and are traditionally filled with meat and veg, but of course there are lots of veggie (and CHEESE!) versions these days as well.

    Lantic Bay may be clsoer to the "real" Poldark than you realise. In the later 18th Century and the first third of the 19th, Fowey was a hotbed of smuggling, and one of the principle places to unload "cargo" (usually brandy). Ther were many conflicts with the Riding Officers, the Dragoons and the Preventive Officers. It appears from contemporary records that almost the whole population were with the smugglers rather than the authorities!
