Love this song! Year of the Dragon is a brilliant underrated movie. The best actor of the 80s Mickey Rourke in his prime and an excellent performance from John Lone who would go on to star in the masterpiece the Last Emperor. RIP Michael Cimino one of the last true artist directors.
Thank you for the upload because this is exactly how the music sound for the time and location. The last time I was fortunate enough to see a similar performance was at a Mid Autumn Festival singing performance in San Francisco Chinatown in the late 90s. But by then, the band no longer existed and the singers had a karaoke machine to perform with. The sound of the instrumental music in the background is 100% spot on for the era (late 70s to 80s). In Taiwan, Hong Kong and some of the fancier Chinatown locations, the Seafood Restaurants would have live band and performers (no one famous yet) play when the restaurant was not fully booked for wedding banquets or birthdays. Many of these live music disappeared when the economy boomed in the 80s and restaurants no longer needed draws to bring in customers. Plus the room by the stage became more valuable for additional tables and seats. When karaoke came along, the bands became virtually extinct and anyone with a decent voice became the singer. The movie itself was also 100% authentic in terms of triad action film. When I say 100% authentic, I meant that's how triads were portrayed in Hong Kong (fictional) films during that time, not how Chinatown was in real life. So in terms of movie making, it was basically an 80s Hong Kong crime drama action film made in America with a bigger budget mixed with an American cop storyline. Again, thank you. I didn't even know this film had a soundtrack until now.
It's more like this movie plus The Godfather influenced the Hong Kong gangster crime movies later,it is 1985.1986's A Better Tomorrow (in story level,a Hong Kong version of Mean Streets) started this era. The greatest movie influenced by Year Of The Dragon, got to be To Be Number One,you can see similar shots between this and TBNO.
What a great song to end one of the finest movies in its time. In retrospect, I'm only guessing that to have Teresa Teng to perform her original Tian Mi Mi for the credits of this movie would have been impossible in Teresa's prime in 1985. More importantly, this particular performance feels so Chinatown in New York and flows so naturally to end the story of obsession and love.
I saw the movie Year Of The Dragon in 1985 (starring Mickey Rouke) and it was one of the most violent movies I ever saw !!! It greatly contrasted with the sweet ending song when the credits were shown !!!
