Camcorder VS DSLR\Mirroless Cameras - 5 Reasons why I like camcorders

  • These days, video cameras come in all shapes and sizes. There is no longer a need for the hobbyist or even professional videographer to use a video camcorder to make video. There are plenty of mirrorless and dslr cameras to choose from that will provide an excellent image, and for some a convenient way to capture footage. In this video , I show some examples of cameras that I have used in the past and some that I currently use, and I explain my camera preference, and the reasons behind it.

    Nice video. No idea why people go the mirrorless route with external recorders and batteries. Those things like the ninja inferno are silly and weigh tons with the extra batteries. There are some lightweight hybrid cinema cameras, like the eva1, just too pricey. Hopefully soon we will see some cheaper compact 4k/60 10 bit cameras, perhaps with high end features like sata ssds.

      Yeah, I guess it depends on what type of work a person is doing, but in my experience, I have always preferred a video camera/cinema camera for recording most types of video. It just makes life easier.

      How about for low light? Like, reeaaalllly dark settings?
      ^like...a pitch black room with 2 Neewer 176 LED lights on my drums and me..
      ^ I've researched and learned that more light can even make a bad camera better, so I may be getting 2 more of those lights and have 1 on each corner of my drum rug.
      What about point and shoots?
      Also, at the $300 - $500 price range. I would need 2 cameras. I have a g7x mk 1, which does really great in my low light setting even with just those 2 lights, BUTTTT, only records video for about 10-15 mins before stopping.
      So:
      1. Long record time - 40+ mins (I dont need 6 hours, but definitely 1 hour would be golden!)
      2. Preferably great battery life too - I don't wanna interrupt my drumming for the video to swap a battery.
      3. Great in low light
      4. Adjustible settings (WB, ISO, Exposure, etc)
      5. $300 Preferably, $500 max.
      6. Bonus if it can be charged while recording video.
      Thoughts?

      there was a fever with the Cinematic Look, narrower depth of field, and S-logs profile. Camcorder does work better for video, but for television and normal day-to-day filming videos. I think people will start realizing this soon this year.

    Another common issue with video on DSLRs and mirrorless is the 29 minutes 59 seconds maximum record time. There are exceptions of course.

    Great video! I agree that (YES) DSLR's or an actual video camera in the end will give a nice quality product. However the points you made about the accessories you need to add to the typical DSLR to give it the functionality of the video camera are spot on!
    Video cameras are by design better for shooting video to give the user easy access to key functions, as you pointed out.

    Thanks for sharing. This was good info. I am doing research on creating my first documentary, and I came across the TH-cam channel of the guy who made the documentary short called SRIRACHA. He used the Lumix mirrorless camera to make the documentary, and he said that he had several battery packs. And yes, he added external microphones, and lenses. But, his purpose in using it was because of his job. He needs to carry lite when he travels. He's a documentary guy for Bloomberg.
    So, after watching this, I will look into the cinematic camera for my project. You made sense.

    • @MichaelWTurner

      Ah yes. You're referring to Griffin Hammond. He used the GH3 to shoot his film. Talented guy. A new GH5 is an excellent camera with tons of features and will work for documentary work, but when you need to be extra quick, there's nothing quite like a dedicated video camera. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment!

    Hi Michael, super video and thoroughly enjoyed it! An intelligent approach to this perennial debate. Personally I’m in agreement with you all the way. A DSLR is really a hybrid Stills/Video Camera and they are good particularly if you had to suffer the 80’s with atrocious VHS Camcorders like I did - LOL!
    However , a dedicated camcorder has far more recording stamina at a wedding or corporate shoot which is essential. Your Frankenstein analogy is the crux of your argument . I too have seen ergonomically designed sleek DSLR’s decked like a Christmas tree with multiple paraphernalia.The addition of extra batteries bolted to the reverse although useful make it cumbersome and causes a weight/balance issue.
    Another point I agree with is the situation in which you “have” to remember a barrel load of accessories to take with you on your shoot !I Another issue related to this which may help others is this. When filming live theatre or dance the auditorium is in darkness - this gives you less visual interaction with the bits bolted on your DSLR. A camcorder has everything close to hand.
    I use a Canon Legria HF G10 a camcorder dedicated to Video. The battery life is at least 3 hours most adequate for Pantomimes and dance shows etc! Another benefit of a camcorder is the optical zoom in which the speed can be adjusted! On most DSLR the zoom is controlled by hand causing very jerky close ups.
    As you say our observations are borne out of experience! I agree too that if you are fixed to a tight budget ( as we all are when starting out!) a DSLR does a GREAT job with video and stills! This is ideal for the beginner and you can learn much! However ,,, I feel if the beginner learns rapidly and absorbs the complex aspects of Videography then they will begin to outgrow the limitations of a DSLR and migrate to a dedicated Videocamera as shown in your presentation.
    Anyway, thanks for a “well balanced” and thought provoking piece to camera , beautifully presented and informative keep it up. Of course this argument will rumble on which is great for debate! The choice dear reader as Michael says is yours ,,,good luck!

      Thanks for your comment, I enjoyed reading it. I used to work at a news station a few years back, and used a JVC 890U. I believe that's the model. It's pretty big, but honestly it was great because it offered me experience with a pro video camera, and I saw the light. Maybe it wasn't as big as the 80s cameras, but it comes close. Haha. Thanks for watching :)

      Thanks for watching and subscribing. I really appreciate it. i made this video over 2 years ago, so I don't remember exactly what I said. For video, I prefer using a dedicated video camera over a mirrorless, but I still own both. Different tools for different work. Both work well depending on what you need them for. If you also require good still photos then a mirrorless camera is still a very good option. I just don't want people totally throwing out the idea of mirrorless cameras. They are perfectly capable too.

    I'm finding out all these things you mentioned trying to film concerts. There's such a huge trend towards cameras like the GH5 or 5dmkiv that it's almost pushed me towards that route forgetting that dedicated video camera have so many perks (a big one for me being the 30 minute limit imposed on most dslr's.) My big reason though for using a dslr is all the glass I have invested in Canon, 700-200 f/2.8, is, etc, love those lenses. I know Canon makes the C series but they're big money for an amateur. Anyways, great video.

    I've always been a camcorder guy. I want to start shooting wedding films and see everyone using these DSLR and mirrorless cameras. They just seem very advanced and I know absolutely nothing about them as I've never owned one. All the lenses and ISO settings and logs and ND filters etc. seems like such a pain. I'm going to pick up a Canon XA50 to start my business and then maybe somewhere down the line start learning to use mirrorless cameras if clients want more artistic stuff. But maybe not, haha.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There not too hard to use. If you understand the features of pro camcorder, then a mirrorless isn't much different. You can handle it

    • @dp8460
      @dp8460 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      one biggest drawback of DSLR and mirrorless are record limit.. with camcorders you can record for like forever.. but with DSLR and mirrorless you can only record for several minutes.. other format like Micro four thirds has the longest record time from mirrorless of around an hour and a little more. and dslr and mirrorless also suffers from heat.. meaning besides the record limit you also get heat limit. for wedding events.. i think a camcorder would be the best.. you can just film endlessly without worrying that your gear will stop at a certain point.

    I found myself watching this video again because it is still the only one on TH-cam that I know of that breaks things down according to the many types of cameras that are being used out here. Could you possibly do a series concerning these differences, and also a documentary type of video about how things have changed in such a short time with camera technology. I'm sure that if you did it right, there would be a high demand to see something like that. Camera tech is one of the most interesting subjects. 🎥🎬📹📸📷📼👀

    Thank you for all of this information. What you said concerning video cameras was really interesting. I didn't know that camcorders can have such long battery life, or that they also can have removable lenses. I really have some things to think about now. Thank you for this video. I am wondering how your cinema video camera does in lower light conditions, and if the lenses for it run about the same price as the lenses for DSLR's and Mirrorless cameras. Once again I want to say thank you for this video. I learned a lot of things.

      BizAndProductReviews It does well in low light. Certainly better than a consumer camcorder. I can take it to about 1600 iso and get a clean picture. Up to 2500 it gets grainy but still very usable. It uses the same lenses you would use on a dslr or mirrorless camera. Any lens you use on a m4/3 camera, such as a panasonic gh4 or gh5 will work on this camera. A matter of fact in this video there is a canon lens on it. The same one I would use with a canon 70d.

    How you doing buddy ?
    Just a few hours ago I was messing around with my Sony nx5u.
    It's like your video camera there buttons all over the place.
    XLR inputs the whole thing just like yours.
    But now that I'm older and my eyesight has gotten bad.
    I went and bought an external monitor for 7-in.
    It makes it much much easier to see what you're doing.
    But I discovered something about my Sony video camera.
    You probably know this but the camera has an internal battery which holds your clock settings etc.
    I just discovered that mine had died the internal battery that is.
    So what that means is when I set my camera up to the settings I want it won't hold the settings once you remove your external battery from the camera.
    It goes back to the default settings that the manufacturer has put in the camera.
    Shooting and editing video is a lot of fun.

    I've tried my share of both. I originally got the Sony FDR-AX53 which is a great camera in a small package, but it did just OK in low light. You couldn't adjust many settings at the same time so it was mostly an all auto camera. I like to film on theme park rides like Disneyworld so the camcorder only worked great outside. I tried upgrading to the Sony AX700 which is more on the professional level, but it lost some features the previous camera had like a touch screen menu and the stabilization. Not sure why they would make a more expensive camera have less features. I ended up returning the AX700 less than a week of usage.
    I recently bought the Fujifilm X-T4 which is my first mirrorless and at first I thought it was too complicated for me, but after using it for a while it grew on me and I've learned to appreciate what it offers. The picture quality in general just looks better and I'm able to switch lenses for different use cases whether I need low light or zoom capability. I did end up spending more buying a gimbal, external mic, tripod, extra lenses etc but it's just more fun to tinker around with than the camcorder.
    The Fuji does 4k in 60fps and up to a 400mbps vs 4k 30fps up to 100mbps on the camcorder. The 30 minute limit isn't too big of a deal to me yet, but if I bought an external monitor someday it would bypass that limit. There's also the bonus of being able to take amazing photos in RAW format, although not at the same time it's recording like the AX53.
    Even though I spent about 3 times as much for the X-T4 I really love it since it's just more fun to use than the camcorder. I have to lug a bunch of stuff around in a backpack, but there's more flexibility in how I can use it by switching lenses or attaching ND or CPL filters or throwing it on a gimbal for smooth video. I've heard of gimbals working for camcorders, but you need a pretty good size one for the clearance issues. As for the battery, I keep a power bank in my backpack which uses power delivery to keep the camera powered while I use it. I just run a wire from the backpack to the camera, but it's not really in the way. I'd rather do that than mount to power bank to the camera adding more weight.
    I'm going to Tennessee next week to give it the first real world test since Florida is virus central right now. Maybe next year I'll be able to test it on the rides for the low light and see how it compares to the Sony. The camcorder was decent in low light, but it looked like crap compared to some other videos I've seen on the same rides that are just so well lit. I don't know how the AX700 would have done in low light with its 1-inch sensor, but I'm pretty sure the X-T4 would still be better with the f/1.4 lens I have.
    So with all that I'm glad I have a mirrorless now although it hurt the bank a bit.

      Different tools for different situations. When I shoot weddings I typically have one cinema camera and one mirrorless - a c100 mark ii or jvc ls300 and a sony a6400. The cameras are constantly changing for me, but they all have their merits. I lot of people are loving the Fuji cameras. Have fun with it. I owned the sony nx80 for a little while which is similar to ax700, and the lowlight performance was ok. The Fuji will surely be better. You made the right choice for your subject matter

    I agree wit choo. If I am shooting video, I want a video camera... not one specifically designed for shooting stills that happens to shoot video on the flip side. What about price tho. Those big video cameras are way expensive. I'd love to have one, but I have a Harley payment to make.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on what a person is trying to get. Because if someone was buying, let's say a sony a6400 - the body alone is around $900, and once you add a cage, handles, audio mixer(maybe), extra batteries or a battery adapter w dummy battery, about 2-4 lenses, nd filters or a matte box, and possibly an external monitor, you would pretty much be around $2000 - 3500 anyways, depending on the quality of the items that you purchase. Of course with a cinema camera, the lenses would be an extra cost too, but with a really good fixed lens camera, there is no extra cost. Being really frugal, building a rig around a smaller inexpensive mirrorless camera is probably more cost effective, but just a little cumbersome.

      The sony nx80 or ax700 are good options. Capable of livestreaming but can't livestream directly to TH-cam or Facebook without additional accessories of some kind. I'm not an expert with the livestreaming stuff though. A better option may be the newer panasonic x1500. That camera does livestream directly to TH-cam and facebook without the need of any accessories at all. Pretty cool camera. Either will give you a good picture from 80ft. The zoom range in both cameras is amazing.

    That's why I'd rather use my C100. I can see the waveform and set exposure perfectly. Even if you want to add a follow focus it ends up being much sleeker. I've also used an EX-3 which is a beast of a camera but it worked so well as a shoulder cam. And of course ND filters, screwing them onto the front of every lens you might want to use is a real pain. Having 3 internal ND filters is a god send.

    Thanks a lot for your reasoning to going with a camcorder. I'm going to move from DSLRs to a camcorder myself. It's just too much damn work for me. I just want a big point & shoot video camera with the minimal amount of adjusting needed. There's always post to fix things in. I'm not saying that DSLRs don't have their place, but damn I hate bokeh.
    For my kind of shooting, I like/need everything to be in reasonable focus. That, and I don't shoot in low light. I don't need a much bigger sensor. I just need good color, long record times, point & shoot focus and the ability to tweak my footage afterwards if needed.

    Absolutely agree. Using anything but a camcorder or action camera for full motion video never made sense to me and still doesn't. Yeah these mirrorless and DSLR can do that but you have to buy all this extra crap just to be effective with it. Waste of money when you don't need any of that with a camcorder which already has good zoom capabilities.

    June 2020 with bigger sensor camcorders coming out you video is more relevant than ever. Camcorders are the way to go for video. One decent built in zoom lens. If / when you need more like low light performance add a second camera - used DSLR or and ILC camcorder new or used. Watched a video on A73 and one of the comments said eventually you will realize WHY the a7III (and other mirrorless) are primarily focused on stills at the expense of video. Biggest complaint for me as a non-pro is the complexity of menu choices in hybrid camera solutions. Every option under the sun for stills and the same for video!

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you. I have a friend who's starting a youtube channel and i recommended a camcorder only because i knew the menu system would make his life harder,
      with a stills camera and his channel isn't focused on visuals. He doesn't want to take stills, he doesn't need low light performance or a shallow depth of field. I figured why bother Thanks for your comment. It's nice to hear other people's experience.

      Hey! Thanks for watching. I owned the nx80 for about 7 months. It was a great camera. There are some differences with ax700. The major one being the xlr handle and i think the video codec is slightly different. Also the ax700 can take stills. If you like the ax100 you will certainly like the ax700. It will come with auto focus that is way better than ax100 and I imagine the image quality will be a little better. Why are you looking to upgrade?

    • @Truthstillmatters2
      @Truthstillmatters2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Turner I’m looking for better auto focus. I’ve noticed in some of my videos the focus drifts a little. The Ax100 is still good though. I’m a one man show and I love the simplicity of the camcorder with its great 4K picture. I need to focus on my teaching and not the equipment so the better autofocus seems appealing. Ive been thinking about the Sony 6400 but the focal length that I need changes as my teaching venues change. I capture my audio through a H6 Zoom so I wouldn’t need the xlr handle. Ive been holding off on upgrading thinking Sony May upgrade the ax700...

    The title does not really fit the video in my opinion. The title says: '5 Reasons why I like camcorder', but then you give 5 reasons you like your current cinema camera, which don't apply to a typical camcorder. Personally I am trying to find out the use case for a current consumer camcoder over something like a video oriented digital camera. The only thing I can really come up with is ease-of-use. While various digital cameras seem to offer more for the same price level, stuff like: more creative control, better lenses, better low light, better image quality. Though I have to say I have never actually owned a camcoder, thought about it but never thought it would serve me better than for instance a full features bridge camera. But now I still wonder who buys consumer camcorders and why...

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kelkschiz I was referring to video camcorders in general whether it be consumer or professional or cinema. I feel a consumer camcorder has a place as well. Like you said, the ease of use is fine for some, and many can be had for a small sum. I have a friend who is starting a youtube channel where he will shoot himself and a whiteboard most of the time and he isn't really technical. He isn't into taking pictures and he didn't want to invest much. He went with a Panasonic camcorder that 350. Good zoom, Mic input, cold shoe mount, AF and he's happy. I

    • @thewriter2549
      @thewriter2549 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      $1500 to $2000 is okay, I could go more. I don't like the feel of a camcorder, but the ones in the store did not have the detachable handle, so maybe that is what I need, a camcorder with a handle for the right feel to position the camcorder - thought about the Canon X11 or X15. Mostly, I need the camcorder for interviews, and for some lower light situations. I want a camcorder that is easy to use with great focus. I almost bought a Sony RX10 iv, but it looks to be too complicated. The store had a Sony AX53, but no handle and I hate the feel. I think you are right about getting a video camera for video, not a DSLR or a mirrorless. Is Prosumer easier to use than Pro? I don't know why so many of the Sony camcorders have no handle.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good budget. You have a ton of options. Cameras that have a handle have xlr inputs for pro microphones. And they will allow you to adjust audio while your recording with a dial or knob. I love having this for my work. If you're doing interviews this will allow you to record sound with two mics at once. It's not a necessity. You just have to make sure you have at least a 3.5mm mic jack on the camera itself. If you don't feel you need this. Look at the sony ax700. It will be better un low light than the older xa10 and xa15. Those are good cameras too, but do your research. Look at videos on youtube and see if they will work for you. Look at samples of low light footage and don't forget about the sony nx100. This has a handle, xlr inputs and is priced very well.

    There's nothing like the ease of a camcorder. But frankly, the DSLR's allow you get much nicer shots since you can use incredibly fast lenses, which you can not use on a camcorder. I was very tempted to get the XF405 but I shoot mostly with the GH5 for 4K 60p and also have a 6Dmkii for the AF needs. That covers it all. But there's something to be said about having one camera and one great shutgun mic and AVX and run around with the camcorder and simply focus on the story rather than the lenses and all the other stuff you have to have in mind when you operate a DSLR. So... tough call... but when I have to pick up a camera I still pick up a DSLR, primarily because of the lenses and larger sensors. Great VLOGs!

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Real World Endo Yes, but you can put fast glass on a c100 or better than that a canon c200. The only problem is the c200 is pretty expensive. The jvc ls300 can use fast glass and crank out a beautiful image and shoot 4k 60p (externally) but the focus sucks. There's always trade offs I guess unless you have a lot of bank 😀 - Canon c200. I think I'm going to rent the sony nx80 or the canon xf400. I think either will do very well for my work. We'll see.. .

      @AANasseh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Turner That’s not true. There’s no auto provide on either of those cameras. Those are Cinema cameras and require set up and are not ENG type cameras, where speed of capture counts.
      Since the last post I ended up getting the XF-405 for specifically that purpose. It’s great since it’s an all in one set up, albeit the comparatively deeper depth of field due to the small sensor and slower lens. So, far, Imm happy with it. :)

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Real World Endo What exactly isn't true? Even though the JVC has terrible auto focus, I find it way quicker to shoot with than a dslr. I do believe the xf400 would be quicker with a fixed lens and better af though. I'm glad your enjoying it. Did I ask you what kind of stuff you shoot?

    • @AANasseh
      @AANasseh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Turner Michael, It’s as simple as pointing and shooting and simply touching the screen where you want to focus. No question JVC will have better looking image because of interchangeable lenses but if you’re just doing simple TH-cam stuff the Canon is the simplest form factor. You don’t realize the value of DPAF until you use it. Then it’s hard to go back!
      I shoot Educational videos with the ENG gear but travel/music videos etc with the smaller cameras with interchangeable lenses, just for the look. Not a real Pro, I confess! ;) Cheers!

    FOR SO CORRECT my friend.. Semi pro camcorders/pro camcorders have way better battery, handle better, have a so much longer run time, look more professional if your doing video and are just better all round than a DSLR... Interchangeable lens is not necessarily that important because for example a 20X optical zoom is covers approx 28 - 600mm range so you dont really need anymore than that.

It's not impossible though. If you're not familiar with concepts of exposure and cameras in general, yeah you may want to get the camcorder. It will certainly be easier. Interesting. I replied a 3 paragraph question on your other video about why you soldl your JVC HM170 so I won't repeat it here :) Thinking of a B camera to my JVC LS300 with Rokinon Cinema lenses (heavy) and have an older Nikon D5200 that technically takes video but really only likes flat daylight. I do have a vello pistol grip with shutter release trigger and Zacuto 3.2" viewfinder. Works great, just poor image. (fixed noise pattern in shadows even at iso 100) Maybe the new newer Nikon will be better D5600 with newer tech... Looking for a B camera, more like a super 8mm usability. But yes I far prefer camcorders like my JC LS300 or my old JVC HD110 with 17x Fujinon ENG lens (far better than the kit 16x Fujinon lens) I wish there was a cheap (hahah) ENG powered zoom lens to mount on the LS300... Rumor mill is new JVC cameras coming in 2018. Compared to my friend's Red Scarlet... that is a Frankenstein machine with wires and things that come off or fail and set up. Oh and incredibly expensive per minute in HDD space since it uses propriertary HDD's.. I see the best thing as several camcorders from same brand for similar or same gama and color settings, and several special purpose cameras for other projects. Maybe a newer DSLR will satisfy my 8mm walking about footage need. Maybe a good consumer camcorder with 50mbps or better and pro gama/color setttings (I have yet to find one.. BH said to think about DSLR or better) The weird ones are the Blackmagic cameras.. sort of in between and still coming of age. A better Pocet Cinema Camera would be great, as in external mountable battery to run 8 hours and such, but be small similar to it's size now. Oh well, no one makes a perfect camera. Though I am farily happy with the JVC LS300 for how I use it.. indie cinema on shoe string budget that is easy to edit and color grade. no 10bit live 444 or 422 output, no 12 bit live ouptut. So later I will have to upgrade to something better, but for the next year or two it will be fine for m. DSLR's I have tried a bunch, own a few, and unless Canon is a lot bettr than NIkon and I'm sure both are better now, I just don't feel the love for them that everone else has , though I can get good footage.. mabye a newer one will be significantly bettter.. So I'm more in the Camcorder for 75% of what I want to shoot... but looking for something small and fun with good image quality 2K though 4K would be nice. That being said if anyone wants is on a limited budget.. used DSLR and a manual focus lens. Do yourself a favor and get a incident light meter. I picked up a Lumu (was $79) pluggs into my ipod touch headphone jack and use Cinema Meter II app for $25 and now I can get consistant DSLR and Camcorder footage shot to shot, day to day, camera to camera. if you can't get the Lumu and or don't have an iPod touch or iPhone, the smarter way is a Sekonic 458 level or better Cine Light meter is something to save for and experiment with the store. I am far more reliable than with histograms. Suddenly my DSLR video is decent. So maybe I shoud give DSLR with cinema or even stock Nikon AF lenses a second chance. who knows. But you are thinking DSLR for first gear? Everyone seems to say Canon is better choice.. maybe.... or see if there are a used G4's out there? ok rambling again.. need to go before I get another paragraph or pointless rambling.. Thank you for posting the video.

      @@MichaelWTurner interviews and broll at sports events. You can see on my channel. I like the xlr ports. Now I use a dji pocket and a zoom with xlr for audio, that I have to later sync, which is a pain.

      @@GregorBrown I have experience with the xf400 which is similar to xa50 with tha ddition of 4k/60fps and live streaming if I am not mistaking. I think for your purposes you may be able to get away with the xa40. Smaller sensor, but for what you are shooting, I'm not sure it would make much of a difference. I think it could certainly work well. The images may look a little crisper of off the xa50 due to a shallower depth of field though

      @@MichaelWTurner I see also the xa50 has built in ND filters.

      Wow. You taught me something. I never imagined, they would make an xa camera without the nd filters. But it seems like it still comes with it but it is an electronic auto nd. I'm fascinated about this. I will have to research it more. Have you looked at any of the panasonic offerings x1000, ux90 or some of their newer ones like the x1500 or x2000?

    Mirrorless or DSLR if you shoot photos and some video. Cinema Camera if you want to focus on Video only. Or better yet both cameras--one for photos, and the other for videos.

    is there a camcorder that has a fish lens attachment?

      Most camcorders have threads on lens for filters. I'm sure fisheye adapters exists. Just have to search for one that fits

    This video was thought-provoking and informative. It really comes down to the budget for me. My current system is the Sony Alpha a6400 + rig/cage + 256GB SD card + 2,000 mAh power bank with a power converter and dummy battery. That gives an ok sensor size, over 15 hours of battery life, and long recording time in 4K. I can't find any camcorders with a comparable sensor size, resolution, and recording time at the price point that this system offers. Your point about fiddling and extra set-up time definitely applies a lot in my case. There's no XLR port either.

      There's just no perfect camera, but I own the 6400 too. It really is good for the money

    Thoughts?

      It's much harder in a camcorder unless you have a lot of room between the subject and background. That's very true. It's possible though
