His virtuosity is jawdropping, but I'm blown away by the tenderness and fragility he can achieve. I heard him 3 nights ago in recital, and he's only gotten better since this concert was recorded. He is the best pianist currently performing.

Many have commented on the unique "Russian" style of Trifonov and I cannot agree more. Like their ice dancing, they begin and end with artistry - NOT technique. Technique is actually a function of effort habits and anatomy. But true virtuosity requires consummate artistry AND technique. Trifonov is like the old Romantic masters for the modern age

+OpusTravels Definitely one of the finest channels on TH-cam, but neither Babayan nor Trifonov I can say are one of the absolute top artists. I have no idea how one can say that a performer who plays in a very modern style sounds anything like a pianist from the 1920s - as most people 100 years old can not recall what they heard back then. And, the recording technooogy was so poor for showing a pianist's ton (I know that was the person who commented before you). But then again, we are in a world of Lang Lang, Wang, Trifonov, and other hyped superstars that are not the very top pianists of their time. I can't comment on the Scriabin 3rd Sonata since no one of consequence today really plays it, but the Debussy and Chopin certainly have been.

+classicalalways Thanks to both of you. Trifonov is still so young, and I think if you cut out all the media nonsense and just listen to him, he's already very impressive. No way can he be lined up with LL and YW. His label may try to do so, but that is the marketing approach at the moment -- young, good-looking talent to bolster what on record anyway is a moribund industry. As for his teacher, Sergei Babayan, I think he's one of the very top pianists today, unique and original. Unfortunately he's hardly represented, but if you hear his live recordings (or just hear him live).....I have some live recordings by him which are out of this world. For some reason, sheet music versions can differ depending on where you got them from. When comparing my version of Rachmaninoffs D major prelude to the one of my teacher, there were 4 or 5 differences in a 4-page piece. So it is possible that Trifonov got a different version as well

@@itchy2345 I don't doubt that Trifonov got his sheet music from a good source. However, differences can still be found between publishers, whether they sound logical or not. Besides, composers also made this more difficult by making changes to sheet music after initial publication (Chopin was notorious for this). Example: listen to Rubinstein's fantaisie impromptu, some notes and phrases are slightly, but notably different than other performances (for example trifonov's). I don't know the cause for sure, but don't use slight irregularities in a performance as an excuse to hate on a pianist

I love it when blind devotees of whoever the latest overhyped fad happens to be get mad at people who make solid critical observations. Trifonov is indeed in the habit if gratuitously slowing down and speeding up the tempo, often within the space of a single phrase, which chops us the musical structure of whatever he's playing and precludes any kind of a long line. I guess that, as well as the wild facial gestures, is what he thinks would convince people of his genius - and he's not wrong, going by some of the reactions.

@@punkpoetry Good point! This type of egocentric subjectivism is the buzz word of our time. José Ortega y Gasset described the phenomenon of know-all diletant in his masterpiece "The Revolt of Masses" (1930). @@punkpoetry mostly agree with you on the up and down tempo changes. i also find his phrasing unruly. It does make for something unpredictable, if that is what you want. Well, I presume he was taught that this is being "free" and therefore cannot be dispensed with in Romantic music. It is typical of the Russian style, in the main. Not Richter. His physical gestures , I think, are just part of his style and have been learned as part of his very relaxed technical training. One can argue that he does succeed in getting the sounds he wants. His facial expressions are, I believe, a true reflection of his emotions and do not have any intentions.
