One of the best shows of recent years. A ray of light in the current wasteland of dark and dystopian science fiction. And its future may depend on how much viewership it can get on Disney+.
Yes, yes it is It is 50 percent homage and 50 percent homage to the Star Trek franchise. You can tell Seth McFarland really loves Star Trek. In fact the actress who played Cassiday Yates in DS9 plays the ship's doctor..
It's far from just a copy of Star Trek though. It does things Star Trek wouldn't do. It makes the format more casual and realistic instead of polished and perfect. Its characters are more flawed, but unlike most characters on TV these days (Including Star Trek's reboot), are still good characters you can admire, and not the absolute worst kind of people the writers could come up with. Characters on most shows are just horrible people, because writers today think conflict is what creates drama, so they make all the characters into awful people who are awful to each other all the time. Characters in Star Trek are meant to be aspirational. Near-perfect people that make you want to be like them. But Orville characters, while still being quite aspirational, are more relatable than Star Trek characters. More imperfect. But they're doing their best despite their flaws. It gives the show a unique feel and identity compared to Star Trek.
In terms of tone, it's closest to Enterprise. But because of how much humour it has, I'd almost compare it more to Firefly in terms of tone. Or even Doctor Who.
How do you get away with uploading clips longer than 7 seconds without triggering TH-cam's autocheck blockers?? Even if fair use the autocheck section is a bugger to avoid unless you cut every 7 seconds but you seem to have got around it??
Usually when something gets detected, it isn't blocked. When it is, I can usually appeal it on the basis of fair use. A couple of my Doctor Who videos required edits and one required such a big edit that it ruined the whole video. The worst one was my Incredible Hulk video that Universal, the notorious copyright tyrants they are, gave me an immediate flag on my account for even daring to dispute on the basis of fair use, so I had to cut that one to ribbons to keep it up. But the Disney-owned stuff in my Marvel videos rarely gets detected at all. The one I did about Theta Protocol for example completely cleared the copyright checks with no issues, and that's like a 20 minute video. I don't know why, but the videos I do with Disney material seem to only ever get claimed for soundtrack stuff. My video about Fisk got claimed by Yo-Yo Ma of all people. But usually they just claim ad revenue, which is fine with me since my channel isn't monetised, and under Canadian law the fair use status of videos like these is conditional on them not making any money. I think that's why I tend to be successful in disputes. I tell them I'm making no money and they are welcome to claim anything they please, if they just leave the video visible. This specific video did receive a claim, but not one that prevents anyone from viewing it. I didn't have to dispute anything. Disney probably gets a few cents every time it's viewed. Fine by me.
I also crop all footage I use in these montages to a 16:9 aspect ratio. In the case of Agents of SHIELD and The Orville, or Star Trek Enterprise or Moffat era Doctor Who, they're already in that format, but for other Star Trek shows, MCU movies, classic Doctor Who, and Davies/Chibnall Who, they all require some amount of cropping, and sometimes a LOT of cropping and pan-and-scan work. That changes the appearance of the material substantially, and that might make the copyright detection, as well as disputes, a little more forgiving.
@@PenneySounds Wow. I uploaded a DW review/recap of the recent special finale and it got autoblocked. I appealed it under fair use and BBC gave me a strike and took it down despite it not even being published! It was just in my unpublished draft queue because it was autodetected anyway. No-one would have ever seen it so I feel like they just struck me out of spite and without giving any feedback as to which parts were problematic so i could edit out. Lol nope. Just a complete strike and a takedown notice - taking down something that wasn't even up anyway!! So I'm staying away from DW content now. Not worth the risk. I also do a few movie recaps on my other channel and they got autoblocked without even using any of the film's audio. It was 100% my own audio and spliced visual clips for context and it got AUTOflagged somehow?? The autochecks section is so random you never know what is gonna trigger it and so you could waste a full week of your life editing a video just for it to be blocked for no reason. Like my DW vid...Super demoralising.
@@PenneySounds Clearly the cropping didn't save this vid from getting detected and claimed though. I read online that the AI they use in autochecks is smart enough to detect video clips that are changed via cropping, filters, colourised and even upside down so it's a real pain in the arse and really stifles fun on the platform and creator freedom. Sometimes i have a good idea for a vid but dont bother starting 'cos whats the point if it just gets blocked then i have to wait 30 days to appeal and then risk a strike!!
I only had a strike once, from Universal. The BBC also threatened one over my Time Crash video. Everything else has gone okay. Maybe it's because I'm citing Canadian law in my disputes? I have no idea.
SHIELD came first
Oh i didn't realise that was the same actress.
u should see her when she was to play Wonder Women
Holy shit! How am I only now just realizing just how similar these two characters are?
I've heard good things about The Orville. Is it really that good?

If you like TNG, DS9, and Voyager, you'll enjoy it, since folks from those shows keep showing up to either star or direct. Personally, i love it.

SETH is an excellent singer
Seth MacFarlane is the same character as Brian Griffin
lol....being tortured by T-Bag is crazy......
