    Propably my favourite ever TPS episode. Wilson is so very eloquent when discussing his music, and isn’t afraid to describe his thinking in detail, whereas others are often more obscure in order to maintain an illusion of “cool”.

    I don't know if TPS has done an episode like this previously (probably have because it is so obvious now that I think about it) but it is truly exceptional. It's not so much because I love much of Steven's work but to get the creator to speak so candidly is a joy to experience. And to have a collaborator present to discuss their role and performances is equally enriching. I think TPS is on to something special. Please do more in this format.

    To me Steven Wilson is in a unique group of artists, this group of artists have a combination of musical, engineering, and production talent that results in great music that is recorded and produced to audiophile standards. There are a few people in the music industry that, if I see their name in the credits, I'll buy the product without knowing anything else about the project. Steven Wilson is one of those names (Bob Clearmountain is another). Thanks for this, it is Fantastic!
    P.S. - "Hand Cannot Erase" is always part of the demo music when I'm trying out a new DAC for the home HiFi.

  • @majormercator
    @majormercator ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Fascinating! The discussion about how Wilson thinks less in terms of demo/master was interesting; I have often felt like more of an amateur because I don't make "demos" as I write songs, only what will become the finished track. I thought there might have been something special in the split between writing/recording, but perhaps not. Although I have realized over time how important it is to get as much of the song written as quickly as possible, which ties into the discussion about first takes. Often enough I don't get most of the song out in a session or two, it's dead. Could spend days or weeks trying to revive it later, but it'll never work. It's like a musical idea's half-life.
    I was also inspired by how Niko talked about the emotional starting point for the Time Is Running Out solo. I find myself thinking about solos in my songs as indulgent, "fun" parts, and not going much deeper than that when I'm actually playing them. Having a specific memory or set of memories that you're trying to take into the solo seems like a good way of accessing more depth. A good reminder to dig deeper.

  • @santibanks
    @santibanks 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    It's kind of funny to watch this because the many things that have been said here about soloing and improvisation is what is totally obvious and naturally for jazz players on any instrument.
    Navigating non diatonic chord sequences: all players are able to do that,
    Using common tones to connect or go from one chord or the other and create a sense of connectedness, grounding, and continuity: one of the most obvious and common ways to navigate through any chord sequence or even to impose your own new harmonies over a piece (i.e. using a tritone substitution),
    Playing inside and outside: so common for jazz players (for the die hard nerds: study David Liebman's Chromatic approach to harmony, for the non-diehards: your sense and rhythm are the key to playing outside, not the choices of scale),
    Melodic minor, harmonic minor: the seven modes of the major scale only get you so far so yes nice flavours which can be used to spice things up, evoke certain emotions, create additional tension and release in phrases, and just provide colour to what otherwise are kind of plain chords,
    Take the vocal line as the starting point: yes that's what all jazz musicians do with the melody of the song (which in the case of jazz standards literally is the vocal line),
    Work on the tone and phrasing and leave space: so common…
    Now don't get me wrong, it really is valuable advice they give here and it's great it is presented on a channel like this because I do agree with Steven's sentiment that a lot of the youtube guitarists are either just boring cover players or just in the shred olympics (or they are a cover player in the shred olympics…). But it just looks funny to me as they are just explaining what jazz players learn and focus on from day 1. The funny aspect is just the difference in approach between players from rock backgrounds and players who start out in jazz. Shout out to Steven for mentioning Derek Bailey.

  • @MrBillUp

    Steven Wilson is constantly saying he is an average guitar player. He even says it in his book. And to be honest its starting to really wind me up. He is one of a very few guitar players who is able to make a guitar "sing." When I listen to him playing, the guitar is talking to me. Stirring my soul. Making the hairs on my arms stand up. I sit there nearly in emotional tears, and at times actually weep.
    There are very few guitar players on this earth that is able to drive this raw emotion out of me. In his own special way he is a virtuoso. I don't care how humble he wants to be. Maybe he really does believe he is not very good. That is a huge shame.

    I love Niko's interpretation.
    Although I have to say, few things I have heard have impressed me as much as the sum of Steven's emotional and compositional brain with the raw, majestic, spontaneous and masterful interpretation of Mr. Guthrie Govan, for me he is the best guitar player I have ever known. exists today, but I have to say that his solo albums or with the aristocrats, there comes a point where so much virtusism ends up boring me, however, added to Mr. Wilson's compositions, I think they are the maximum expression of the right measure of heart, soul, technique, passion and emotion that exist in music.
    Maybe if you asked me one day, I would dare to say that, for me, the best music band par excellence in history would be Pink Floyd, without a doubt, but I have to admit that the sum of the minds of Wilson Govan surpasses in terms of emotion to any album by the best band in history.

    At 26:27 it's basically "Comfortably Numb" with a couple of chord changes omitted towards the end of the sequence, isn't it? Steven admits Floyd riffs creep in, unintentionally...but, he can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. Also, his work with Guthrie's guitar playing is better than anyone else's...well, EVER!! Please, please, please listen to some Umphreys McGee. Dan especially! Prog, jam, funk, all of it is covered by those guys. You guys are doing great work. Loving the more intiment artist interviews. Peace!

    Really happy to see Niko back with Steven at last, his work on the "Get All You Deserve" live album is probably my favorite guitar work on anything Steven Wilson related.

      I had hoped Niko Tsonev continued well in his career after my being so impressed by his work on the Grace for Drowning tour (on the DVD)

    The first time I heard Steven's new album, Niko's guitar solos jumped out of the speakers. He's sooooo good. Great interview!

    Ok Steven question... ATMOS so I am a stereo guy, I develop tube HiFi, Guitar Amps, pedals so forth, good friend of Andy Partridge, yes been to Swindon. Anyway I am having a hard time with ATMOS if 93% of us are stereo only and really what percent even have the basic ATMOS speaker/amplifier compliment?
    Thanks, Gordon

    Is the db-meter only a display, or is it a complete unit with electronics and microphone(s)? If so, to the latter, where can one buy it?

      Display with an internal mic. We found it art Jeff’s Giant Electronic Jumble Sale. (Amazon)

    Unfortunately for the singer the guitar sings better but I'd be tempted to add more OD texture. Taking a que from the singer's performance is key to success.

    I avoid covering myself a much as possible. While attempting not to forget what I've created I reuse that creative attitude in the reinforcing act of remembering. Parts of earlier recordings are not carried forward as the identity of the piece is stabilized. But, that identity is matured by the process which allows retention of its life. If, while playing, an idea occurs which adds it may be kept and extended when the piece is relived. This attitude, hopefully, disallows the "canned" performance. If it, and I, are not alive in the retelling, the performance withers.
