The best way to win on this map is to take Europe. I have learned this by watching years of Risk on TH-cam
You know, that makes a lot of sense.
One fascinating thing about Dunning-Kruger is that you can be at both ends of the spectrum at the same time. You can be very self-aware of your own shortcoming in general, but in the moment, when focused on your task, you can at the same time be overconfident in your ability to solve the task in question.
You can apply it both on the whole and on the parts of the whole, making it.
I guess that's why you sometimes see really smart people do really dumb things. 🙂

I love when pete changes the mic sound😄
I love when the mic changes the pete sound.
Just wanted to say that I've been watching you for ages but never really played... But I decided to play and won my first game. Thanks for being a brilliant entertainer Pete!!
Great first try! Keep going
Random commenter here, even at the master level of games humans miss things in the stress of the moment that seem obvious to casual observers. Also, no casual observer can know the mind of the one in the moment playing the game and what the strategy in the moment was/ Add in the random nature of dice games in general and boom, things happen, things go wrong. Asking why a decision was made leads to learning from both sides. Pete, in this case over years, has shown he understands the dynamics of this game in subtle ways those of us watching don't, due to lake of experience. He also is very quick to admit when he thinks he made an error and tells us why. More so has shown that he's very willing to recount for us what we may have questions about. Just saying he was wrong is a simplistic ego move by the poster to feel they got something over someone who is unquestionably one of the best in the world at what he does. Thanks Pete for all the hours of fun and good vibes!
9:26 Random Commenter X here! this is a very common misquote of the Dunning-Kruger effect. the actual study done simply showed that people who scored poorly on an assessment tended to have higher expectations of their grade, while those who scored well were more likely to be doubtful that they did so. it became conflated with the "Idiot Paradox" which is more based on people spreading their experiences of individuals thinking more highly of their understanding of various subjects.
Did I misunderstand the term?
@@FreePete The real Dunning Kruger effect is more results-oriented than full comprehension

Fiction. It is my favourite drug to consume in copious amounts.
Storytime: (why I like fiction)
First off, I'm much younger than you are, by iirc about 20 years. When I was little, up until 4th-5th grade, I had severe eye issues that rendered reading extremely difficult. That condition was/is called double vision. Basically, my eyes didn't focus on the same spot. My left eye was focused roughly 3cm inwards from wherever I was looking, and it gets worse the closer it is.
I spent 9 months undergoing treatment in the form of eye training. Effectively doing eye workouts for that entire period and keeping them healthy. Still use glasses to reduce strain, as when my eyes get tired it shows up more.
Because of this, and my extremely active imagination when I was little, I couldn't read so instead made stories in my head. Still do, cuz it's fun and imagination is like a muscle. Use it or lose it.
When I could finally read, I started making up for all the time I couldn't. After 5 years I'd made up for all the time lost by a good margin. Now, it's probably far beyond that.
Since I like imagining all sorts of stuff, fantasy & fiction is my favourite stuff to read. After all, the more ideas I'm introduced to the more I can create. Recently been getting into more sci-fi, but I get enough non-fiction from my textbooks for college courses.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my perspective. :)
Hope you enjoyed it!
p.s. if you ever want recommendations, be it fiction or scientific articles, just ask. I got loads of interesting ones.
I'm studying history and psych
Pete! love your videos, I watch every day but I am horrible at remembering to like the video even though I always enjoy them. a quick reminder would be much appreciated. Thanks!
11:00 Calling it now; Pete is wrong, there is no Cap in Istanbul. I am confident in this because Pete actually saw Istanbul from the start of the game.
The not cap is in Ankara, one off
I wonder if it would be a good idea to screenshot the board at the start of the game. @freepete what do you think?
@@keithgiven4317 I think here we're just talking about the area rather than the single territory
38:49 "I don't care how long it goes"
*checks video length*
2 hours... yep Pete is a man of his word! 😂😂😂
You do better in the middle caps because your style of play fit a scouting for kills and use early advantage to keep control or stop others from progressing
That's a good point. It's not just the board, it's how I tend to interact with it.
honestly i’m just happy that someone entertaining uploads in the weird hours of the day 😂😂
I am not saying that I am a master of debating but I know the basics and I can 100% say Pete is GM debator
Is there anything better than GM?
@@FreePete nothing as far as I know
6 out of 9 for those Blizzard placements. have a good weekend Sir. GL&GG
Hi Pete unfortunately I haven’t been able to catch a live yet due to a different time zones. But, I have always been wanting to ask this question how would you rank the Bonusses on this map I’ve always wondered which position to take most of the time. And am normally conflicted, I generally avoid noob corner and the bottom of the map because of noobs but am wondering if I maybe should switch it up. I always think that you could do a tier list video of most common positions of the map and which are the best such as one point noob corner one point orient etc. Thanks Pete your an amazing content creator ❤ much love and support.
If you have it, IMHO Dinark Alps is the single best starting point on the board - and if there is a blizzard in it, its basically OP in the early game ... am I wrong? - any other better place?
I'm down. But as someone also said. It might be better given my aggro playstyle as opposed to in a vacuum where only winning matters
Hey Pete!
Thanks for the great content as always.
I realised you pretty much stopped using the slider especially in your early game and I'm genuinely curious as to why. Is it boring you, do you think it's a waste of time and you know you'll outskill most of your opponents even with losing a couple extra troops?
Not trying to sound smart or anything, I know you know how to slider but it seems like a deliberate choice to mostly not slider anymore and I'm pretty sure you did in your older videos so I'm just curious to know why.
Pete, what do you think about bots only setting on 5? Seems like it would be more fair.
The only change I would make to the automated bots is I would have them automatically lock in lowest placement after a turn or two. No more coming back for value.
Reminds me of a game that could have been against you, Pete, from the way the chap played (but then, I note that I and many others are emulating your successful style of play); after the third guy had been taken out, I and the other chap went into a fierce and fast 1v1, denying each other board as much as possible and avoiding opening caps in the approved fashion. It was tough and close. It came down to cards, more or less, and the other chap stepped off and GGed me when it was fairly clear the matter had been resolved. I'm guessing that here, at the 30min mark(ish) White either missed that he didn't need to act, or he simply feared the fierce 1v1? A brief after game chat would be handy - what were you thinking at x point? - but without that, we'll never know for sure, I guess. And now I'm going to watch the rest of the game...
It's a compliment that you associate what works with 'could have been against me' haha
That sounds like a very satisfying win against a respectful opponent. Here's to many more!
11:10 definitely talking about me ❤😂
I was user something random and commented very much on your videos I change my user to zed recently
I wouldn't be so sure about that!
@@FreePete much love ❤️ I mean no hate when I sometimes say to you the things you missed … I got interested in risk cause of you Pete I mean no hate and currently in Top 100 in the World & I owe it to you man
1:32:40 What do you think about opening greens 2k stack to the board here?
You're predicting the ending.
At that point I wasn't willing to take additional cap cards. Didn't want to give either of these guys the bright idea to card block me
Do you think risk should change the progressive game mode to make the trades continue to exponentially grow so stale mates like this never happen. I refuse to play games this long, my adhd won’t allow it.
I would love to see that! As soon as the devs reach out to me to consult with the design of this game I'd be happy to help them bring it to the next level!
Interesting that when white went bad he probably could have taken out all your caps and didn't might have been a better play than what he did
Spoiler Alert: @ 36:00 Pete comes to the realization that this is going to be a nonsensical three player stalemate and decides to have social hour time with the fans.
Haha it's a little too sensical
Pete I only make fun of you going danaric alps because I believe you have the skill to play other positions and I find it intriguing. But also 3 for +4 is nutty so it makes sense.
I'm wondering if on a meta level it isn't about skill and the position itself is superior
It should probably be a +3. Also having such access to the board and especially powerful with blizzards makes it too good to pass up.
0:15 Pete forgot what the game was called
Stupid robot, somebody wiped his memory banks
so Pete started with the terretory just below Pink's cap... and then, so he saw Istambul... and then He started to think Purple or red CAPped in Instambul.. Am I right?
The purple cap was one off in Ankara
See for example you did a bad move trying to split the card block 33:35 / you should’ve sit on that and let him open your capital by taking 2 cards and you put most of your set on right block under the Russia
🤣🤟
Lol
Exactly what I'm talking about 😂😂😂
1:01:10
But is IQ a sufficient measure of intellect?
If you notice a drop off in viewers around the 40min mark... There's a good reason for that 😅
oh yeah it's not mysterious to me. But I had to teach white that lesson
@@FreePete I meant because of the FourLoko ad! I enjoyed the chill time with Pete 😅
@@Shcroft2 LOL I didn't watch it live! omg
The RC only gave it up because of actual in person threats to the members. Doubt they would have given it up otherwise
As a random commenter I demand equal time. Not really.
You've Earned it
i'm not watching people stack for 90 minutes..... skip to the ending
What would you do when white broke?
Suicide out or play to win?
@@FreePete Pete it's not an attack on your person or playing style, it's a mentioning of the most obvious flaw in the game... stalling.
@FreePete one of the few things I don't like about your style of play is you hate stalemates so much you often settle for 2nd i stead of outgrinding your opponents.
It was very satisfying to watch you win this BS game and I would have endured a 4h stalemate if I needed to.
@@nabedane There are far more people like the original poster here than there are like you. I have to adapt to that reality to make a show. And the fact is, the game is broken if take a card and pass stalemates are what it incentivizes people playing. We all have done it many times. I don't need to shoot the same show to prove that I can do it again. I just don't have that kind of time and neither do most viewers.
@@ghuinink I just don't know what to do about that given the circumstances.

so Pete if you would be so kind, more 69 caps!
