Personally, I never follow trends just because it's a trend so I agree that one must follow their individual taste and preferences. Some folks don't have an innate sense of design and space but have a desire to have their homes look stylish which prompts them to seek out the advice of designers or trendsetters.
Am one of those folks who make their own abstract art. And the best thing is, when a picture that reflected one part of my life feels outdated, I just paint over it with something more relevant to me now, and I get an instant refresh too.
The funny part is there are people like me that don’t think they can make art they would like, as if it has to be a perfect realistic portrait of a cherished family member or something, abstract is great, flexible, and low pressure lol ❤
I never got into abstract art. I love nature. Trees, mountains, rivers. We have paintings that used to be in my in-laws house (extremely old and at your young age, you may say vintage 😂) but I love them. I have 2 small oval shaped paintings that my mom painted, maybe, 30 plus years ago. I live in Washington state which is probably why I love nature paintings. Thank you, Garrett, for always having the best design ideas.
I just had a new boucle sofa delivered to my house 2 weeks ago! 😂 I love it, but I'm sure I'll change it out for something different in 3-5 years, which is what I usually do.
I love abstract art. In art school I minored in printmaking and majored in sculpture, my preferred medium being welded scrap steel. I have always seen my art as a collaboration between myself and the viewer: I start the story, but the viewer completes it by bringing to it their perspective, feelings, and experiences. Now that I am pushing 80, I’m finding steel to be getting a lot heavier than it used to be, so I seldom tackle steel anymore. Instead, I’m getting back into printmaking and collage, working with forms and colours and textures that make my heart sing. I have never displayed much of my own art in my own home much, as my husband only liked very traditional landscapes, and I was always about trying to keep the peace. I will soon be downsizing to what will probably be my last home, and I will be filling that house with all my favourite sculptures, the ones I liked too much to sell, and all the new pieces I am now creating. And as far as I am concerned, art is as functional as a sofa or a dining table: My soul needs art as much as my body needs the other furniture.
True abstract art can be wonderful. I have some from great artists, but in the video I was referring to mass produced box store types. I love a story behind the art people display.
@ I’m with you there. Whether it’s abstract art, or those standard IKEA photos that everyone buys, the art in your home should reflect who you are, not just be something to cover a blank space. …Although, for some sad souls, maybe the mass-produced big-box junk IS who they are. But of course, that’s not the sort of person who would be watching your channel anyway.
Hi Garrett, As far as art is concerned, I love colorful, abstract art as well as other kinds. But, it has to jump off the page at me. That's when I buy it. And I have never regretted my purchases. Take care and continue with your great videos. I love your little dog. So cute. N
I so love your videos because you such a fun way of talking about ways we can all upgrade our space! We learn & laugh & when the puppy visits we melt into total calming bliss because he’s the best buddy puppy 🐶! Sooooooo CUTE 🥰 🐾!!!!
Goodbye Boucle finally! Totally agree about sculpture furniture too! If it’s functional fine, but if it’s there for decor, not for me. I was never a fan of white oak as it looks unfinished most of the time. A warm finish is so much nicer. I love Art on walls, especially if it means something to you. Every piece of Art means something to me in our home. I love colour too, but mostly in the Art. Great video Garrett as always and love to see Arden. Love his beautiful eyebrows! Very fashionable. Have a good rest of the weekend and may your weekend bring you and your lovely family happiness. My husband is outside in the snow putting up our Christmas lights. Cheers! ☃️🤗🥰🍁🇨🇦
A townhome I lived in had pickled cabinetry in the East Coast Tri State kitchen. I loved it and even the woman who bought my place loved it. It’s a soft look and complements just about any style. Would not want it everywhere, but it sure worked in the kitchen.
I adore abstract art. I paint my own but love work from other artists too. I agree the Homegoods abstract usually looks tacky because it's mostly mass produced and generally has a cheap frame.
@ if you were building a cabin or an honest to God real farmhouse, maybe. But I still don’t think I’d like it. The funny part is I know many people that put in gray flooring in their house over the last few years and they all hate it now.
I NEEDED this segment about artwork. I’m to the point in my decor that I’m selecting Art and as much as I would like to go for big pieces of abstract, art in colors that please me, I’m trying to go a little more expensive and get something that doesn’t seem so anonymous. For instance, I’m a flower gardener so I’m looking at abstract art that features florals. That is personal to me. Thanks for the push!
Good Noon Garrett, Totally agree about every design trends that needs to be left behind. You are very funny(sitting on a boucle) So true about the last year trends, I loved boucle and structural footstool/chair and kept looking for it, but was never happy as wasn’t getting the right stuff so eventually dropped the idea. Instead I got a study lamp for my reading nook which is a structural humanoid with a big shade!! Arden is so cute, almost edible♥️ Yes you two were vibing today and indeed he is taken over you. Smart, cute and warm😍 Awww cutie is gonna turn a year old next month🥰 Have a good week ahead🤗
Re: Abstract art - I hear ya - but what you don't like is bad consumer couch art that is in the style of abstract. Abstract art of Picasso or Jackson Pollock or similar is wonderful. Classic. Let's leave mass consumption art behind. The one I can't stand is the highland cow one.
I have a large living room, so in the smaller “hearth” room, open to the kitchen, I used a jute rug with the diamond (checkerboard) pattern and I love it. The couch is “ mushroom” color, the walls are SW canvas tan and the half paneling is Swiss coffee. BUT I am moving to an open floor plan, so my gut says the rug won’t work. So THANKS, for settling that question for me!
Lol, I bought a cream colored boucle mid century accent chair because I thought it would look great in my space, and it does! I had no idea what boucle was so I didn't buy it for being trendy. Lmao, figured as soon as I buy something it's already passe. It's pretty comfy though and I love it.
I so agree about the boucle... my white boucle dining chairs were a very pretty mistake. Can't sit and drink my coffee there, my dark colored clothes transfer onto them, and my cats think they're a scratching post.
I live by myself and bought the white boucle sofa thinking I would use it but I don't. I sit on my counter stools all the time! It was a waste of money, but it sure looks pretty. Worse is that I live in a small rental with no other room to chill in. If I ever have guests, I will cringe when they sit on my sofa!
I never even dreamed of a white couch while I had a kid and cats. Now that I'd love to have maybe white leather furniture, I have grandchildren. Ha ha ha!
Arden IS getting more beautiful every time. I see what you mean re: abstract art. I also like that Garrett sonoften talks about getting art from all kinds of places, and how much he stresses buying from artists you know or meet. My son bought me a print from his friend Doodman. I know him. The art is slightly evocative of de Rooy, and the whole context is special to me. Notnto mention the piece looks really cool.
Always enjoy your videos and you always make me laugh! "I'm getting a message, but I don't think it's one you want to hear."🤣...and Arden is so calm and adorable, love him! 🐶🥰

Hello, @Garrett LeChic! Always good to find another informative & enjoyable video from you!😊 Thank you for sharing your thoughtful design insights! 🙂 Btw, I don't know what "OG" means. Please, illuminate? 🤔 Many thanks! 🙏🌿💐🌿🥰💚😘🌿💐🌿🙏
Garrett, I love your channel and always get schooled. That said, I never ever bought into the boucle craze (though it does look amazing in your space). Why? Because... duh, common sense and knowing me and my family are not going to treat our furniture in a precious way. Not buying into boucle was a super easy decision for me. I'm black - I use shea and oils on my skin and hair. So, absolutely not. I have always had white sofas made of quality materials, just not boucle. In fact, I have two custom made Interior Define sofas in my main living room right now. I went with a 100% polyester, Performance Classic Chenille in the color Alabaster, which has a cleaning code (W); rub count 200K in case that helps anyone. Know/learn your cleaning codes and rub counts. Everything that's pretty or popular should not get to live in our spaces.
I love ornate Spanish revival or Jacobean oak antique furniture. I stripped an ornate Jacobean dining table with these massive chunky legs to the bare red oak and did a light bleaching to get some of the red out; the table top is DIVINE! One single huge plank of red oak with beautiful grain. I have white oak kitchen cabinets, but only on one side of the kitchen on the bottom. I have a lot of mixed wood tones in my house. I do not follow rules on not mixing wood and metals. I love the English Country look where mixing is acceptable as long as it looks curated.
When do you think we will start seeing the beauty in furniture with a golden tinge? Heywood Wakefield furniture is so beautiful and the golden wood is GORGEOUS!! Will it come back again?
Hard to know when trends come in and out. I think the most important thing is not to get locked into the cyclical nature of trends guiding you, but instead taking inspiration from them and if possible where appropriate incorporate the ones you love into your style and what makes you happy. I just do what we love in our home regardless of the trends of the day.
@@GarrettLeChic I guess my problem is the lack of furniture in "blonde" furniture now since I spilled on my blond table when I was painting. The nice, old Heywood Wakefield is out of my price range now and impossible to find in newer furniture. May just have to re-stain my table I have now.
My mother-in-law left a houseful of Haywood Wakefield when she passed 25 years ago - all in excellent condition. Did I take any of it? No. I've kicked myself several times over it. I did take some other neat pieces like her original butterfly chairs and Russell Wright dinnerware.

White washed oak was overdone in tract home cabinets circa 1988-1995. It is largely gone because it turned greenish and was painted over within a few years. It did make companion honey oak look classic for years. Wonder what the current version will look like in a few years.

As an older woman… You must decorate with what makes you comfortable in your setting.
If you feel comfortable with that 40s chair? You keep that

Boucle reminds me of popcorn ceiling. I don’t like it.
