Towable, off-grid Ecocapsule gathers energy/water anywhere

  • Can off-grid, anywhere-living appeal to the masses? The Ecocapsule mobile dwelling gathers solar/wind energy, harvests/filters water. It shelters up to 2 comfortably and includes all essentials: kitchen, toilet, shower, folding bed, and storage.
    Sona Pohlova and Tomáš Žáček created the original design in 2014 for a client with a ranch who didn't have the infrastructure for guest housing. They didn’t win the contract but were published worldwide and received requests from people to buy it. They spent 5 years turning their plans into a prototype.
    Today they are selling their Ecocapsule - complete with shower and toilet, sleeping area for two, and kitchenette - to anyone looking to “stay in nature for a long time, for example, scientists, photographers, rangers or extreme tourists” or someone interested in installing one on a city rooftop. The pods are highly mobile: they can easily be pulled by a pickup truck or even airlifted by helicopter (for those rooftop needs).
    The units capture sun energy (PV) as well as their own rainwater (and grey and blackwater). There’s even an app-controlled smart-home system and sensors that help you monitor your energy and water use.

      I cannot agree more on this.
      Sales would go crazy if they make it a tad expensive but with more stuff that define it as a house and not a camping unit.
      Filtering the used water - a bigger power cells, so a sentence such as "a its windy, we will be able to cook tonight" doesn't have to be part of the promo.
      I know there are campers that have it all but since its small, if they make it attachable to a car as a trailer, it might pull way more attention than a camper. Since it doesn't cost 200k with those features.
      Oh god the possibilities are so limitless .

    Kirsten this is interesting as usual for the channel but I was expecting some more questioning from you when it comes to the "eco" labeled design:
    - how the filtering works?
    - what is the expected generated energy and to what amount of autonomy it corresponds?
    - how are the materials used ecological?
    Furthermore, I have doubts about the advantages of the shape it self:
    - flat surfaces are probably more industrially scalable and substitutable if damaged, unless there is a big advantage in saving material and assembling with a curved shape;
    - having solar panels facing opposite sides is a huge waste of potential energy harvest, maybe cut to half;
    - storing space is reduced.
    I don't agree with the stated cozy feel of the shape: we are not born inside an egg, we are far more used to a box shape or triangular ceiling, so this is highly subjective.
    However, I see some advantages:
    - it is less disturbed by air flow, which it is better if you plan to use it as a trailer and also might feel more comfortable if it is windy outside;
    - less joints make it more stable when transporting and less prone to cracks, also if it falls over to one side.
    Even with that shape, I know how to save more space in the kitchen and bathroom than the present design.
    This might be useful for some property owners that want to complement their business with some tourists staying for a while, because the shape makes it a different experience. Other than that, an RV/caravan/trailer would be more cost efficient.

      If it doesn't wash clothes, it's not viable as a home..... Not to mention the rain collection function does not make ANY sense, considering the shape of the whole thing, it doesn't have NEARLY enough surface area...
      To make this viable, they need a little bit more space to make room for something to wash clothes and support the system behind that, store larger amounts of food with a decent fridge, and make the surface area of the rain collection larger... This means ditching the egg-shaped look... Because as it stands right now, it's riddled with design flaws, which is hilariously on-point for the slovak stereotype of being too lazy to do competent work. :P
      It's hilarious that they're charging 80 000 euro's for an incomplete product riddled with design flaws, roflmfao... I could build something superior for 1/4 of that price. They need to step up their game to justify charging such an exorbitant premium for their product. xD

      Polly Monopoly So what is your suggestion? Instead of throwing blind negative statements around, come up with a solution :). The point is, regardless of where you are going to put the capsule, you can’t simply leak sewage into the surrounding environment. So you may want to build a cheap and effective reed bed filtration system, pipe it into a methane biodigester, or wear a spacesuit so you can shit your pants and take it home with you.....or ask for it to be built without the effluent tank.

But even then, for 100k, I can renovate and rent 10 caravans which would provide a much healthier ROI. Nevertheless, Kudos to the Slovaks for getting ideas of their drawing board!

    For a sturdy disaster shelter I love the self contained function.
    Egg shape should 'shed' strong winds (dismounted wind turbine). Heavy eye bolts could allow anchoring to resist strong winds given a secure footing. The water is pumped & discarded? (grey & black tanks??) Composting toilet?
    No refrigeration in the kitchen & no 6' standing room inside but, seems like you could be comfortable. Sit down shower is better than no shower. How much does it weigh with empty water tanks?

    I think with most people, storage space would run out very quickly with this. The kitchen alone is not as good as the kitchen in a small van build. I think if you were a single person picking crops, using it as a hotel room, or that sort of thing it would be okay. Temporary only for most people. Hopefully.
    As far as I know, the US is already using shipping containers in places like the arctic circle. They look more spacious than this.
    It was nice to hear Russian accents, I enjoyed it for some reason.

    It needs to be Car+Ecocapsule
    The Front part needs to be a Convertible Car and the whole thing on Wheels
    The fact you have to rely on another machine to move it around makes it little bit behind the times
    If it can be hauled by a Motorcycle, it would equally be more usable
    Nevertheless, it is a very useful structure in nature
    I congratulate you on this Excellent product.
