MicroNugget: What is a VLAN?

    In this video, Jeremy Cioara covers VLANs. Having the same IP subnet is fine for a small network, but too many broadcasts can slow down the network and even the devices on it. VLANs solve that problem and can enable a "local" network across an entire campus.
    IP subnetting is great for letting networked devices make quick requests to one another and have access to network resources, but too many devices means too many broadcasts - and then the entire network's going to start dragging. Security can also be an issue if you don't have fancy Layer 2 features protecting every device. Hence VLANs - they take a switch or entire network and break it up into multiples by creating broadcast separations as well as security boundaries by effectively "hiding" the devices on a network from one another. Here's a brief explanation of VLAN functionality - even how they use trunk - or tagged - ports to forward traffic to other switches.

    Hey chandio45! Jeremy isn't actually going to do an MPLS series because Cisco is changing the certifications track soon and phasing out MPLS. He will however do a series on the new cert.

    Thanks Man! This was a really simplified and easy to understand explanation. Really supplemented what I have read in books and provided clear understandings of why one would use a VLAN. Question for you. What layer(s) of the OSI and/or TCP/IP does a VLAN operate on?

    What if the two Vlan's need to talk to each other? Do they have to go the default gateway?

  • @ludovinaines

    Question! is it possible that 2 different Vlans can ping each other without a router? i got it configured in packet tracer and i cant find out how its possible, am i missing something???

  • @Felyrion
    @Felyrion 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the explenation! I´m missing just one bit in your story: What happens with the daisy-chained port? In your drawing you have a phone and a computer on a single port. That means you have two devices with different VLANs on a single port right? What happens then? ( in the video @ 4:25 )

    • @cbtnuggets
      @cbtnuggets  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Felyrion Thank you for your question. We are reaching out to Jeremy and will follow up with his answer as soon as possible.

    • @cbtnuggets
      @cbtnuggets  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Felyrion, Jeremy's response is "The port on the switch is configured as a limited trunk that supplies multiple VLANs (two) on a single port. The phone ends up on one, the attached PC on another." Hope that helps!

    So a VLAN can split up switches into virtual "separate switches" to take on the identity of multiple networks?

    • @cbtnuggets

      +AkeemKN You are correct! A VLAN can split up switches into virtual separate switches to take on the identity of multiple networks.
