This is quite the good tier list for the Open Championships. Even those of us that don't throw anything under the Storm umbrella can make logical choices based off of your list, DTang. Thank you for this.

Just started bowling in the past year and went earlier this month. Was super fun and a way different beast than house. Ran essentially a pearl sym and a spare ball, but I'm hoping to learn more and come in next year and hit it hard

Looking at this list it kinda has balls listed in categories i also had in mind. I bowl Reno May 18-19.
Leaning at 1) DNA 2) a pin down Reality Check. (May put a Eternity here but so far haven't been comfortable with the look i have on mine) 3) Wolverine Dark Moss 4) Burner Pearl 5) Zen U 6) the White Mix
I can see why you would put the 900 Global Dark Moss in the burn section. It picks up really good on the burn and once the lane transitions too. I carry that ball with me all the time.
Bowling the open championships next week and my arsenal is looking to be Gem, Reality, Phaze 2, Zen, Hyroad pearl, and a mix. Hoping to cover a nice range and put myself in a good spot to have any motion I may need
Only category missing is balls they will disqualify during the competition.
Columbia white dot (pin down) from 1985 (yea I'm old) was my first ball and is my "mix ball". If I don't over think it, it finds every single pin spare. Thanks for the video. I'm still "flipping coins' on flying with 4 balls this year, and witch 4.
My White Dot is also from the mid 80s and still in the bag
Bowled with McNiel’s group a couple months ago. We played team too straight for our rev rates. Minors didn’t hook as much as the bowlers journal so that made things a bit easier. Started doubles with 140 and ended with 590 once we jumped a zone left after game 1. Then had 637 in singles for 1810. I didn’t throw the ball great but the corners were hard to get out at times. We shined all our asym solids to get through the transition from the mids to backs and worked out pretty well. Path to the pocket wasn’t hard but carrying the corners was the tough part. I used an X-1 all of minors and first game of team, then used fate game 2 of team and revenant the last game of team when the lanes opened up. I tried the Ruby a couple of times but it was not enough diff imo. Not sure if this helps for anyone but that’s my take on everything
Darren, I love this video and the previous one. Very helpful for someone just getting back into bowling. A quick question, do you consider the Ruby !Q to be a "weak" ball, and how different is it to the Fate?

We bowled the 16th and 17th of this month and I brought the phaze 2 and the proton physics. The phaze 2 didn't work out so well so I stuck with the proton physics. I put 500 grit on it and stayed on 10 board. It literally felt like a house shot to me. I feel like I did very well and for now I'm in the top 25 for all events in standard division. I won a few brackets and did great in doubles and singles.
Was hoping youd be bowling the Earl Anthony Pro-Am. Saw you there last year.

Times have changed couldn't be any truer. Back in the day, early to mid 80's, we were only allowed 2 balls. I think it was Wichita in 87 or 88, who remembers that far back, I brought my AMF Angle drilled 3/4 negative side and 3/4 finger and for some reason I also brought my Columbia Bleeder 1/2 positive side and 1/2 finger. Those lanes back then had huge back ends but that year there was good hold and a nice back end if you could throw straight up 5. I went with the bleeder for all 9 games. That was my best year at ABC National. Can't remember the scores almost 40 years later
That's hilarious, I actually just picked up a white mix with 4000 on it this afternoon.
As someone who has already bowled nationals, I can agree with the list. The lanes were definitely playable but the window for ball motion was kind of tight for me personally. If you can play down and in, that's probably the better play than trying to hook the lane. By the end of singles I was IQT up the back straight down 7 lol
I just got back from Reno and wish I had urethane on most of it. I used the purple hammer reactive for most of the blocks. I did bowl my 2nd game in the doubles with the night road and was able to bowl a 242 that game. But I only was able to bring 3 balls and the last one was unusable for me bc it hooked too much and it was the web tour. I was really tempted to drill a weaker ball and probably should have bc the doubles and singles hooked even more than than the teams event did. I was just afraid that those blocks would hook a lot more.
zen u to iq tour worked great for me, everyone throwing shiny stuff either off the rip or half way through game 1 for both patterns

There’s definitely a diff when considering how far down the oil is. I would benefit much more from throwing urethane on the fresh vs my gem (I think anyways). When I have this pattern to practice on in sports nights at different alleys, I always struggle because of that. Gem ball good on long pattern
I'm taking a Hustle USA, Wolverine Dark Moss, and a 1984 Faball Black Hammer to Reno at the end of the month. I'm flying so, I'm only bringing three balls this year.
I used a rubicon with about 1-2k on it to get it to hook stop but it kept driving even with 2 hands something like a dna would help u stay right longer
In D/S I had a lot of success with a 1500 polished Reality. Used it games 3-6
Always enjoy your cometary on tier selection. I agree that Transition is a mudy expression. Why not have numbers to express the degree of fresh . This is just an example and I would hope that the pros would come up with something better. For speculation sake: 8 to 7 could be degrees of Fresh. 6 to 5 is when the lane has leveled out . 4 to 1 Burn to dry.

I bowled the first weekend and as a 2 handed bowler I threw the pitch black for 8 games and the zen u for the last one

I'm only able to bring a max of 3 balls to the OC including my spare ball.
My current arsenal: Super Nova, UC3, Axiom Pearl, Hyped Pearl, HB Intensity. My idea was to go with the UC3 and the Super Nova.

I'm bringing a pin down DNA, pin up Exotic Gem, and pin down Zen. I have a pin down phaze 5, but I like the sharper look of the Zen more.

I know the Gem will be in my bag. Won a state doubles tournament last year with it. Not sure what else. I will see what Peter Somoff suggests. He usually has a clue as to what will work.
I’m a stroker that throws regularly around 16mph at the pins. Thinking of bringing a pin down TNT, pin down IQ Ruby, the purple hammer, and my plastic white dot. Thoughts?

I think im bringing Reality, Zen Soul, Pride, Wild Streak, Purple, Spare. I might just kick out that wild streak and bring a GB2, and hope I don’t need anything between a benchmark and a urethane ball. I’m left handed, so giving the purple a serious look on both patterns is gonna be a must. I hope i can throw it all 9 games, that would please me greatly.

Can anyone explain to me why this list is different than the best bowling balls for league video? is it because the oil patterns are different or would this list also work for league just trying to understand.

In need of a heavy oil asym ball debating between the reality and gem, my arsenal is ufo alert, physix, infinite physix and pitch black. 2 hand bowler.

@vichai Moua if this is an arsenal for the USBC Open Championships the UFO Alert you can't bring up. It's one of the balls that was declared ineligible for USBC National events including the Open from last year. & last year's list still applies this year.
Reality is going to store more energy and has way more room to play with surface and early to late. I would say reality for sure

These tier lists are always interesting for me to watch, considering I am just a casual house bowler. I find it very informative and just great content. One day, I'll bowl my first tournament when my average is high enough.
What's a burn ball DT?
“Burn” means the oil has been removed from the lane after numerous reactive balls have went down lane. This usually occurs after 3-4 games in tournaments, sooner in league play. So you want to use a weaker cover/core to store the energy for downlane pin action.
Why is urethane used in the fresh rather than when the lanes dry up?
Urethane balls are the earliest hooking pieces on the market. Huge misconception when it comes to them being “weak”. They have less hook potential bc of the core. When the lanes start to transition, the front of the lane hooks more. Throwing urethane magnifies the problem.

Apparently it’s only illegal in certain tourneys, if I understand that correctly. It should still be legal in league.

Get to know someone at the factory and have them make your bowling balls all one color for a consistent friction throughout the whole revolution. Most bowling tournaments are led by one color bowling balls. Why??
