Bought a Stihl 028 in 1984 or 1985. That saw was never in a repair shop. I used it anywhere from 10 to 50 gas tanks a year depending on what I needed or was helping others with. That saw lasted until 3 years ago when I finally replaced it with a 271. 16" and 20" bars do all I want or care to do. Don't forget the Stihl Forestry Helmet System and matching Chaps! Steel toes and safety glasses are recommended too.

A good quality chainsaw is one of those purchases that you will never regret. I struggled for years trying to keep bargain chain saws running. Finally bought a Stihl to help clean up after Katrina. Man what a difference! It is still running like a champ.

You brought out several key points about selecting "the" saw that you use most. It needs to be an extension of you, and not something you have to wrestle with, and are constantly in re-adjustment mode because of weight. The one thing that you mentioned that everyone should really consider (that most don't) is power-to-weight ratio. That is huge! The way I can tell the MS 261 is your go-to saw is how fluidly you move with it. That saw is almost constantly working as you limb, and buck. 'Good video, old boy!

If money was no object, I would have a 462 and a 261. The power to weight ratio of the 462 is amazing. The 261 is just the right size for 90% of home owner jobs. But, since I can't have both, I have gone with the 362. I do a lot of trail maintenance and the extra pound and a half adds up, but the better power to weight ratio makes it worth it. I tried to offset that with a light 20" bar and couldn't be happier.

Wait until you get your hands on a ms500i it will be your pick up saw of choice. I have about 15 saws to pick. And it's pretty much all I pick up.
It's quick it's light and it makes you smile ear to ear. It has cut down my cutting times by 1/3 for a trailer load.

My main goto is also the MS261C, I run it with either a 20" or a 16" bar. For bucking and dicing smaller trees, I use my easy on the arms MS170.

I have both the 261C and 170 as well and use them for 95% of my cutting. I also have a MS250 (best quality/power for the money you can buy!) and the MS362C for when I get into a pile of larger logs. Honestly though, I could probably just get a 20” bar for my 261C (I normally run an 18”) and sell the 362C and 250.
But........ no. Gotta keep the toys 😏
Which is exactly why I also still have an 028 Wood Boss!

Lately, I have been using my 660, 661, or 440/044, but I have been cutting up orange osage at 18 to 25 in diameter. It was alittle too much for my 261. My favorite saw for firewooding has always been my 20 year old 029 with a 20" bar. As I've gotten older and less spry, I added a 170 and find it perfect for limbing. It is about half the weight of the 029. Great combo in my opinion. With either, a sharp chain makes all the difference.

Yah Markus we knew about not hitting the dirt. That is why we don’t saw all the way through and then turn the log. It is funny because I am use to working in the woods where the tractor would not make it. Peeled a lot of aspen for paper and we always tried to keep out logs off the ground to make peeling easier. We useed a spoon shaped spud and could get 8 feet or more of the bark off all the way around the log. Could do a whole tree in a couple of minutes when conditions were good.

I have used many different saws through the years I like the MS181C 16" and the MS251C 18" for Firewood both are Easy Start and Quick Release Chain covers. I use the Stihl 2 in 1 Sharpener every tank of fuel. One or Two strokes on each tooth sharpens the tooth and lowers the raker. I will put a MS181 with a 2 in 1 sharpened chain up against any saw. Not much of difference with a good sharp chain except the saw is alot lighter. I cut 15 cords in 3 days.

I had a 181 I used for my camping firewood saw and wanted to upgrade. The plan was to go with an MS250, which is the near the top for Stihl homeowner saws but that changed in a chance 20 minutes. I went to a friends cabin up in the interior of British Columbia that sits on 10 acres of treed property and each fall they go into a section and cut up the deadfall birch trees for the winters firewood and there’s some big 30+” diameter trees there. As luck would have it they were using an MS250 and let me try it out. I loved it but my friends family member says “hang on a minute” as he walked away and came back with an MS261 which he told me to try. It was night and day different, I couldn’t believe how good it was. The next week I had one.

I find that working not as long with a bigger saw wears me out less that working longer with a smaller saw. Same goes for bar length. I rather bend over less using a longer bar for bucking and the shortest bar I use is a 25" ... saves my back. My go to is the 661 with a 25" bar for felling and a 36" for bucking. I have a 460, O36 and 361, I use all 3 for cutting wood. I wouldn't trade my Stihl saws for any other brand.

I bought an MS271 a handful of years ago and it was a great saw, but I always wished I had spent a little more and gotten a pro model. Earlier this year, I decided to do so, but was trying to decide between the 261 and 362. Finally pulled the trigger on the 362 and I am very happy with it. The biggest thing that swayed me is that it was the same weight as the 271, with a ton more power. The 261 would have been a weight savings. I’d love to grab a 261 some time down the road though.

What happened to that 036 you used to have? That, to me is the best firewood saw you have. I had a 261 and to me it had no personality and I did not like it. My favorite firewood saw is my ms 360. It won’t quite stay with my ms 440 but it is old reliable. I do have a 20 inch Total laminated bar on it, so it is pretty handy and light. It is much more powerful than that 50 cc 261.

American cherry? Any reason you chose that log for firewood vs. tossing it on the mill? Curious as i have a bunch ready to come down that I was going to put on the mill, but am still very new and figuring it out... Enjoyable as usual!

A few years back, my neighbor and I were clearing our yards of a bunch of dead Ponerosa Pine trees. We had a total of about three acres between us. He had a Stihl MS290 and I had just bought a Husky 450. I could never get my saw to run properly and I found out it had a recall for the carburetor. It went into the shop twice, but it never ran great. I ended up getting rid of it and picking up a Stihl MS291, which worked great. Since then we have moved to a new place and my MS291 is only used for occasional tree trimming work, but I am still very happy with its performance.

Ah, the 880, the dancing chainsaw! You are lucky back in Western Pa, you have real gasoline. With CA pump gas, you will ruin your fuel system if you leave your pumpgas premix in your saw for more than a month. Lead free, non-ethanol fuel runs about $19 to $23 per gallon out here. I run a MS 271 FarmBoss with a 20” bar. I also run a Husky 142e for limbing. I have a 45 year old ProMac 800 with a 48” bar for cutting my heavy live oak and eucalyptus rounds. It really smokes, never have to worry about mosquitos when I’m running that.

Michael from North East Kansas. Mike, what RPM do you have your tractor running when mulching? It's hard to tell in the video with the Wallenstein doing its job. Tractor does not seem to be working hard and those looked like good sized limbs you put through it.

I've had an MS 290 Farm Boss with an 18 inch bar for about 20 years now. Its cleared at least 20 or 30 acres and cut hundreds of cords of firewood. I've gone through 2 bars and at wore out at least 10 chains. Its truly been a beast of a saw and done me so well. Starts every time no matter how long it has sat. Too bad they stopped making them! I don't know what I'll do if this ol' girl calls it quits. The only (negative?) i can say about Stihl...You'll never get to buy a new Stihl because the old ones just dont wear out. My dad still uses his original 015 top handle from 1973. The only thing we ever did to it was change it over to the new bar and chain drive style so he could get chains for it.

I have two of the 290 Stihl Saws. First one i bought in 2004. The other is a couple years old. They are very reliable saws. I have cut many cords of wood. Bucked up 36inch Red oaks from Hurricane Michael. Really like the 261 as well.

Mike, Greg from Port Orchard Washington- who sharpens you’re chainsaw blades? If it’s you when do you find time? On the sawmill do you just install a new blade when it’s time for one?

I LOVE my MS261c-m and my MS462c-m, I also have the HT103 and love it but it’s a specialty use saw for a specific purpose. I have other saws as well but none worth mentioning other than something new I’ve stumbled into via hot sawing. I took an old MS170 and tore it completely down and turned it into a hot saw via mods I won’t list here but one of the last things I did do that any MS170 owner can have done at their local dealer is I got the 1/4p sprocket and threw on a 12” bar with 1/4p chain and man that thing screams. The mods I made with a tuneable carb made a difference but honestly I took the same sprocket, bar, and chain setup and slapped it on a repaired MS170 I did for someone and it made a huge difference. If you haven’t tired some of the newer MS193 or MS194 and switched it to 1/4p chain setup for limbing and trail maintenance you are missing out. I take that setup with me into the creek in the Spring with a crew to help cleanup and I was out cutting the guys running bigger saws left and right even when I had to double cut. The great power to weight ratio really shows at the end of the day too when we are sitting around the trucks. Give me a high power to weight ratio saw with a narrow kerf any day of the week for limbing and cleanup jobs.
