    Hey, y'all so this is what I've learned so far about free cancels in YOMI. When I was first learning how to use free cancels, I had to figure them out by myself, so I thought it would be helpful to make a video that explains how they work.

    just an additional note: as of a recent patch, you can spend one bar of meter to free cancel if you're out of free cancel pips :)

    Free cancels also open you up to very hard reads. Because they let you cancel your move on the next turn your opponent gets, if your opponent uses a laggy move and doesn't free cancel it and you use a quick move and free cancel it, you will only get a turn once your opponent finishes their move. Best example is with cowboy vs. ninja: Cowboy free cancels H slash and ninja drop kicks without a free cancel, and even though cowboy free cancelled the drop kick still hits. Honestly I haven't labbed out or been in many situations where this is super useful but it's a fun nuance and adds depth to the game.

      @Somnia- @KarkVant believe a simpler way to describe it is that free cancel gives you an action when the opponent gets their next action. If they commit to a move that means they don't get an action before their hit lands therefore you don't get your free cancel. Basically free cancel makes your move safer if the opponent dodges or will be able to interrupt their action before the attack lands. Free cancel will not, however, protect you from an opponent committing to a move which counters yours.

      Basically, most options you lose to you will still lose when they pick it and you free cancelled

    You said very few moves come out in 2 frames. There are actually no moves that can. Which strengthens your point if anything.

      modded example is moonwalker hat trick (the 1 frame hitbox is the opposite side of where you throw hats, and it's finicky at best for neutral

      Unless they’re frame disadvantage is so great, that it essentially comes out in 2. On a side note, a 2-frame jab would be terrifying. 😨

    An excellent guide, funny story about how I learned about free cancel for the first time. I got absolutely whooped by some random cowboy on fire, he literally thought me how to play the game properly.

    A final thing to your grab point, ninja can convert off of grab in any oponent di except away from him without levels and any oponent di with a quick slash, so that makes his grab very effective at starting and extending combos

    Not sure if someone pointed this out already and sorry if they have and I'm just repeating but, Free cancelled moves will *always* be parriable, so sometimes you could just, not use free cancel and force a block, it won't exactly give you another combo but depending on the move it should give you some + frames for that added bonus on the RPS right after the block

    • @DriPud
      @DriPud 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There’s advantages to having the certainty of a forced block for certain characters as well- for example, mutant can recharge slop by using a multi-hit attack like corkscrew on a blocking opponent

    I like to spam impale on my enemies while free cancel if they try to grab me i will press another cancel and impale again which they will miss the first fake impale and giving me a chance to do a combo potential its best when they are high on the air so u can follow up with a gun throw and lasso i like to call it fake-out impale

      @ShukoKuriyami 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheYellowSignal there's also a situation where they can actually grab u even if u free cancel and the best counter for that is jumping when your in the air they can't grab you you can only grab someone if both of you are either in air or on the ground, when i try and impale my opponent i free cancel jump on the next part cause they are likely to grab me and then hit them while im in the air.

  • @ihave2cows
    @ihave2cows 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    free canceling was a mistake, give me the old days where every action was a raw dog rock paper scissors and every whiff could be punished, and walking backwards gave you like -10 frame advantage.

  • @lowwetydde3998
    @lowwetydde3998 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Wtf does a " 50/50 " mean I'm assuming it means you put yourself in a scenario where your opponent can also move

    • @YomiLearn
      @YomiLearn ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Broadly speaking, a 50/50 is a situation where there are essentially 2 real options.
      In this video's example, free canceling an attack that will hit in 2 frames means the opponent has to decide if you're going to continue the attack or not. 2 frames isn't enough time to do anything besides block, so the decision boils down to the 50/50 of whether or not the attacker will commit to the attack. It's basically assuming that there is a 50% chance that the attack will continue and must be blocked, or a 50% chance that the attacker will cancel into some other option.

      @@YomiLearn Thats a great explaination

    • @shame2189
      @shame2189 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As YOMI Learn said, you give your opponent two options.
      There are also Rock Paper Scissors or "Tech-chase" scenarios which usually have to do with getup animations after being knocked down, and function pretty much the same, however with three options, and usually one player defending.
      The importance behind these situations is conditioning. You can default to the safest option the first one or two times, conditioning your opponent into expecting a certain move. At the point you think this is the case, you'll want to switch your approach to an option that counters their new approach, or even do nothing instead and make them block, giving you a frame advantage.
      This is the art we call "An Epic Mixup"

    • @ShukoKuriyami
      @ShukoKuriyami ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I often dodge when there is 50/50 chance but the attacker has a better chance of hitting example of this is when im doing a downward cleave and i free cancel lets just say the other player tries to block what i will do is press the same attack which cancels the first and does another move and the other player cant parry it since the attacker delayed his attack a bit

  • @Celticjamz

  • @gankstak
    @gankstak 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Poor explanation tbh. You never explain what it really is. You just say it "helps you throw out moves more safely". but what is it? How does it work? If you free cancel your current move, does that mean youre just canceling the animation early and that it can still do damage?

    • @TheGigaBrain
      @TheGigaBrain 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Free cancelling gives you the _option_ to cancel your attack into another action when your opponent next becomes actionable, but you can choose to Hold instead, allowing the attack to finish its animation and potentially connect if it's not blocked or otherwise countered.
