Memorial architecture is the construction of a building that is built to commemorate an event or a person. Azadi Tower, which was known as Shahyad Tower before the revolution; It is an excellent example of a memorial architecture and was designed by "Hossein Amanat" as a sign of the entrance gate of Iran to the modern world. The main facade of this tower has a close and clear resemblance to one of the original symbols in Iranian architectural decorations, namely "Maqrans", which is mentioned in few sources.
Who is the designer of Azadi Tower?
Hossein Amanat was born in 1321 in an artistic family in Tehran. His father was from Kashan and his mother was from Kashani-Hamdani. As he says in his memoirs; Visiting the ruins of Parse (Takht Jamshid) left a deep impression on his childhood and his artistic vision as an adult.

Shahyad (Freedom) Tower architecture, which is also referred to as the gateway to modern Iran; It has a modern-combined (post-modern) style. The architectural styles used in this tower have branched out from the glorious periods of the history of this land, i.e. the Achaemenid, Sasanian and Islamic periods.
According to Amanat himself, the idea of building the tower was inspired by the 4 arches of Sassanid Iran. The four large and raised columns of this tower are covered with a four-part dome. For example, the Jaghazanbil ziggurat in Susa is one of the oldest examples of monumental architecture in Iran, which was a temple to commemorate the goddess Inshushinak (guardian of the city of Susa).
We can clearly recognize the design and construction of the Freedom Tower as an architecture that not only aims to honor the history of a nation, but also becomes a gateway to use the modern technology of its time to symbolize Iran's entry into modernity.
The history of Iran's architecture is full of glorious architectural achievements, which were manifested in a unique way in the construction of this tower. In the following, we will examine these achievements in the form of architectural elements and pillars of Shahyad Tower.
Azadi Tower or Shahyad is designed without pillars or load-bearing walls, and in fact, like a statue, it relies only on itself. The design of the tower and its 4 columns, each of which has dimensions equal to 42x62, is exemplary and unique in its kind. The 4 columns of this tower seem to rotate around themselves until they shrink and support the roof. With a complete resemblance to an Iranian hanging moqrans.
