    Another great video big guy. Love all the jigs you have for the engines and transmissions. I think we all have ADD when it comes to our VW dubs. Love watching your videos for your stories. I have learned alot from your videos. Thank you again for all you do for our great car.

    Amen on static tiing the motor. My very first build was almost 50 years ago. I static timed it, filled the float bowl on my Holley Bug Spray through the vent tube. It lit off after less than one turn of the crank. I broke in the cam at the required rpm for the required length of time. I used the same cam and lifters in other motors with no problems. The folks who don't static time the engines and prie the fuel systems. Bit it carbs ir FI make me cringe. Half the time I think its justbfor tRV or TH-cam drama flames and all. I never had the money to throw away good builds. Love your videos. Haven't touched a VW for decades, but enjoy watching.

    Another great vid , learned some more from ya once again. Yea EZGZ ...VW aircooled used for years on Experimental aircraft. Flew one. My Dad a Bush Pilot for many years built two experimental aircraft with VW engines, one called a Super Pup (scaled down Piper J3) and a Teenie Two all aluminum single place. You hand start them with the propeller.

    You can usually buy brake cleaner at ~50% off, by the case, any day. They sell at that price to shops, so just set-up a commercial account.

    If your case does leak... I have had great luck with permatex external gasket sealer for cracks. Comes In a spray can online order from oreilys and is for low pressure leaks. My repair has lasted 2 years on a Cummins 12v timing gear cover..

    put heat on the area you think the case is cracked and if it is cracked it will open rite up and then you know.. We built alot of cranks for great plains airplanes back in the day for 4 cyl motors. We also built a ton of the 2cyl. crankshafts and motors for leonard milholland plans. He sold the plans for the legal eagle ultra light planes check it out.

    Hay EZ, loving your videos, its a great help on my 1776 build for my 66 split bus. I have an after market crank (69mm) what do i do with the grub screws in the new crank? Leave them in or pull them? are the they there for the relief of oil or holes left over from maching work? Thanks Dave (UK) 🇬🇧

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clean that preservative off the crank. Use gas or something strong, get a small brush maybe the brass rifle barrel brush from a 22 caliber gun cleaning kit for the oil passages. After it's all clean you put those plugs (grub screws) in the threaded holes with "Red Locktight Sealer" It should be obvious where to put them because the holes are threaded.

    Hi Ezgz,
    thank you for again a great vid. Always wondering how you get the case, crank aso. that clean! One thing: my engine has def. only one shim under the distributor gear and I found it like that in some books like Haynes i.e.

    Hey EZ. You said not to use silicone on case halves, but use permatex. Does silicone break down over time?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, but it is to thick and squishes out inside the engine then comes loose and plugs up oil passages. Better have a stock oil screen in it that first start up and when you pull it out you find peaces everytime. I still get it from using it on my cylinders. Thats why I don't smear it. I just put a small bead in the corner.

  • @Certifiedtray310

    Curious on how that engine held up? Im about to take out my 1300cc single port because it smokes i was thinking about making it a 1776cc dual port to play with so i can drive the car while i build a better more reliable motor with a new case, but in the mean time i want to build the motor on a budget

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The engine is holding up fine and runs real smooth. Getting about 27MPG it's a good engine for stop and go in town but lacks power for higher speeds and passing which I not doing anyway.

    • @Certifiedtray310
      @Certifiedtray310 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheEZGZ it sounds like you got what you wanted atleast for the fuel economy! do you think its ok to use my single port case for a 1776 if its in good shape? Im gonna get a as41 case eventually to build a bigger better motor but this will be the first time im building a motor myself so i dont want to spend much, i was thinking dual port stock heads, stock crank, 110 engle cam, straight cut gears and dual 40 idf carbs

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      a 110 cam is horrible unless you spend the money for dual carbs.
      Listen up tray. If it's your first build on a budget. hone the cylinders and buy new rings and bearings and build a stock 1300 that you have. Maybe get some new sp heads and put it back together with new oil pump and bearings. you will gain experience less likley to make mistakes and you will make more power than you have and feel the difference.

    What do you think about mofco hydraulic lifter? Saying you will never have to do a valve adjustment again?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I would like to try a set but they are still kind of pricey and not many reviews that I have seen. You must keep in mind that oil goes threw the lifter to get to the top end of the rocker shaft and help cool the head. What have you heard about them? I'm guessing that if it was easy and reliable everyone would be making them and it would be a no brainer for everyone to have them. The magazine's would have right ups every month touting how great they were and of course competition would drive the price down. I'm just on the fence on this issue. On a stock cam zero clearance means more lift or on any cam for that matter. Not so sure how they would work on performance cam's. On the negative side you are adding weight to the valve train?????

      @@TheEZGZ True. Always great info. I built one of frist german style super beetle's in Us when frist getting into beetle and bought a 74 super beetle at 13 and didn't realize the difference at the time. So I built 914 direct injected 2.2l turbo motor, with 911 disc brakes front/rear and adjustable struts front, and custom coil overs rear, and 901 transmission. Crazy money and super high maintenance.... just pick up a 68 from a friend that was in jam. So I really like your videos, getting back into it....would it be worth it to do a 1800cc ministorker single port? For 68 since I look more at reliability as possible daily driver in fl, and keep cost reseanable or just do top end rebuild with those thick wall 88mm AA pistions?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope! Just build a 1776 and get the same results with less work and maybe a engle 90 cam and life is Good . :-)
