May I recommend investing in a pasta rolling machine, it's great for rolling out large even thickness areas of Das, wouldn't recommend making pasta with it afterwards though.
The PVA glue is very clever in use. I've got another tip: If you want to dry large shapes, do this under a plastic dome. Make small holes in it and the drying process will slow down. Then your workpiece will not tear. If you have objects with uneven parts, cover the small parts or protrusions with small pieces of plastic ... even then there will be less cracks in your work.
Hey Luke I used your tip on my project and it had the exact effect I was hoping to achieve when I bought das initially. The pure das dried really quickly and would only go on in sheets like icing sugar. With the pva added, I was able to paste it on like butter, then smooth it over with a watery finger. The finish is super smooth and as a bonus it isn't powdery - my chest doesn't like the powder at all. Anyway. Thank you, mate.
Wow thanks for the video. Not for the clay itself but the GreenStuff rollers, I never heard of them. Now I want the "Rolling Pin Runic" to provide walls and magical spell items for an undead army.
In the past I've used clay+pva to cover statues I've carved out of floral foam and I found that adding the foam dust to the mixture makes it dry harder.
Tip for storing DAS: spray ziplock bag with bit of water, put DAS in, push as much air out as possible, close. The water/humidity keeps it from curing. If you own a vacuum machine (like for vacuuming food for sous vide) that will keep it soft for longer as well.
Thanks for that tip. I used Das to lay a dusty road texture and when I painted it with pva and paint to add a finish, it seemed to curl up off the hard plastic base. Maybe with pva mixed in this won't happen.
Another good option for some texture on the sand bags is to use the knurled grip part of a hobby/exacto knife and roll it across the bag. Makes a nice sort of woven fabric look. I really need to pick up some of those gs rollers. They look fantastic. Awesome video as usual.
Thanks for doing this. I've got the best part of my first and only slab in an airtight container having been put off it because it went brittle and cracked. Legend.
I found for using texture rollers or pads that it's better if you wait for it to nearly dry.. not straight after you have moulded it. Stops it sticking to what you are using Same as ready.mixed filler Didn't know about the PVA thing.. Thank you Luke Informative as ever Swear your ear plugs are getting bigger
Luke not as good making sandbags as Mel but okay for us non-professionals. Anther tip you might think about is using Talcum powder when Das becomes too wet and like you said it holds its form beautifully. Cheers Mate!
Yipsnake... Mel's got 2 vids on sandbags. The other one applies to Milliput. And I agree with you. Everyone has their own opinion. Having said that... I like neither, and make my own out of micro-fiber cloth filled with sand dust. (For museum quality displays) Naturally... for war gaming boards, Mel's bags are a little "over board", and Luke's are easier, quicker, and do the job for its intended purpose.
This is one of the most useful channel on here, I was just wondering if you have any tips on how to recreate GWs gemstone paints at all? Especially in different colours
Luke I bought some air dry clay on the weekend just to see if it works for bases. And now I find your video so that's perfect timing as always. 👍 Btw my wife is a potter and had a good laugh at me buying "kid's clay" haha
If I make a plastic wall.. then cover it with clay and texture it - like you did on the base - will it stay stuck to it afterwards.. or will it start to pull off the plastic? Thanks for all these great tips :)
Can you show us how to do a lava board. I got the salamanders HH box and I want to make 2 feet by 2 feet board for armies on parade for the local store. Thanks !
Hello sir thanks for your tutorial. I wanted to make about 10 stone pillars/columns for a building. Can you get das smooth enough in cylinder shape? Thanks!
Would it be possible to use this on foamboard to texture walls? Put the air drying clay on the foamboard then put the clay on it to roll out the texture? Because i find that foamboard does not hold the details all that well. But pva warps the foam, so i wonder how it would work with the clay?
Could you do a video on using red Das to make loose bricks and brick rubble? I have been on a Cities of Death 40k kick lately terrain wise and really want a variety in my rubble piles.
Can't find the PVA sealant and adhesive. I either find the sealant, but it isn't adhesive. Or I find the adhesive sealant but it isn't PVA. Wish he'd put the link to the brand in the video.
tmdoray no, das is way heavier and a lot less "elastic" than polymer or epoxy clays plus, it gets a "dusty" finish you don't actually want (adding PVA can correct those issues, but only to some point) you can try, but it won't give you a good result at all, especially on drapings it's just not the right material ^__^
Hi luke! Great video. I tried to recreate this myself but with a more simple "Craft PVA glue" and my was very different to how yours turned out, did i do something wrong or do i HAVE to use the same product as you do in this video? Thanks!
@@piyamum6627 No, no glue needed. Just lightly wet the surface (with water) you are sticking to and lightly wet the glob of clay with water, then press the glob in and rub your finger over it. Dampen your finger with water too and use it to smooth the lumps.
funny the german "das" in like "der/die/das" are the equivalent to "the" in english, so the title looked like "the how to use...." video, (for me that is) xD i need to get those rollers someday to build stuff for my boardgames
Hi Luke.. those greenstuff rollers.. do they work on the dense poly boards? ... I'm thinking about the 6mm underfloor stuff - tinyurl.com/y77xt85n - if they could be made to imprint onto that, it'd make a sweet road surface.. do you know if anyone's tried that at all?
May I recommend investing in a pasta rolling machine, it's great for rolling out large even thickness areas of Das, wouldn't recommend making pasta with it afterwards though.
Graeme Rigg Italian pasta, of course.
Awesome tip, why didn't I think of that :D

Hi! I see you worked with DAS before. I'd like to put a thin layer of DAS around a styrofoam ball. How would you recommend me to do it, please?
Wow thanks for the video. Not for the clay itself but the GreenStuff rollers, I never heard of them. Now I want the "Rolling Pin Runic" to provide walls and magical spell items for an undead army.
just the video I was looking for cheers Luke! I'm going to buy myself a brick roller to help making Frostgrave ruins and buildings alot easier!
In the past I've used clay+pva to cover statues I've carved out of floral foam and I found that adding the foam dust to the mixture makes it dry harder.
Damn it, Luke! My mum found out I used a fork to mix the PVA glue in. :'(
LOL! It's funny that eventually he gave up on the fork and just used his fingers directly.

Same as ready.mixed filler
Didn't know about the PVA thing..
Thank you Luke
Informative as ever

Totally missed the opportunity to title the video "Das is how we do it!" and play Montell Jordan in the background

This a great tip mixing PVA into DAS clay (y) Is it possible to premix DAS and PVA and then store it in an air tight container for use later?
You, my brother from another father, just saved my box of paper clay from being dumped into the trash.
Very helpful! Thanks! I enjoy your “how to’s...
This is one of the most useful channel on here, I was just wondering if you have any tips on how to recreate GWs gemstone paints at all? Especially in different colours
I use vallejo 'still water' mixed with a coloured ink. Works nicely for me.
Awesome!
Used it for decades but found Plus to be just a bit better !
Do you only push down lightly on the roller to avoid passing on the laser burn lines?
Luke I bought some air dry clay on the weekend just to see if it works for bases. And now I find your video so that's perfect timing as always. 👍 Btw my wife is a potter and had a good laugh at me buying "kid's clay" haha
I spy a Waitrose bottle in the background... You've changed dude. You've changed!

Easier to kneed the glue into the clay with your fingers. Also works well to use a little liquid green stuff mixed with the PVA.
Hello sir thanks for your tutorial. I wanted to make about 10 stone pillars/columns for a building. Can you get das smooth enough in cylinder shape? Thanks!
DAZ clay is so good to use, it is an amazing clay..

Lukes Aps - I will take a look at the molds later tonight and shoot you any questions I may have
Try running it through a pasta maker to blend it.
I’m going to be combining this with your wallpaper modular tiles for my Mordheim board. Cheers.
That's brilliant luke, nice cheap way to do my dungeon tiles - thanks!
I made some sandbags literally 30minutes before this video was uploaded :/ Lol unlucky me btw this is video is amazing
hey thanks ...saying hi from Puerto Rico ..awesome idea

Does adding the glue make the surface shiny? Im worried that It'll make the surface more difficult to paint.
Can you show us two identical pieces, one made with default DAS and one made out of your mixture?
I'm making a large diorama base with das clay is it the pva and water that stops it from cracking?
Lukes Aps cheers bud
Whats the working time on Das, compared to the pva version? Does it make it harden faster?
Do you think this would be suitable to sculpt models / model parts from? Or would it be too fragile or prone to snapping?
@Lukes Aps - what about simple conversions like capes or gun slings and such?
tmdoray
no, das is way heavier and a lot less "elastic" than polymer or epoxy clays

^__^
Use super sculpey, super sculpey firm or greenstuff.
Great video got my subscription. I would have like to seen them painted up, I'm sure you have other videos doing that but would have been nice to see.
Thanks! Time to sculpt!
What did you use for the base you put the das on?
Good video. . I have never had das crack yet love it ...
Ey up luke. Glad I met you at the expo. Cheers for the das video
Lukes Aps your a busy man. It's ok mate. I've not touched any hobby stuff in a while either so you've given me something do over winter , hero ✊👍
Use das clay on my Model Railway layouts. Great video
Once glue is added are you able to store the unused clay?
Could you add paint at the same time as the pva?
Can you use tacky glue or just pva
Hi luke! Great video. I tried to recreate this myself but with a more simple "Craft PVA glue" and my was very different to how yours turned out, did i do something wrong or do i HAVE to use the same product as you do in this video? Thanks!
That sandbag trick is really clever! Would you say you'd be able to use the clay in place of Green Stuff for filling gaps in models as well?
Brilliant as always.
Has anyone used Jovi clay instead? I assume it should be exactly the same but just wanted to check before buying.
Once it dries how do u get off the underpiece it's on?
Can you make a Das Boot
Is it self adhesive or need Glu to stick?plz reply
Ok... and then need glue to stick?
@@piyamum6627 No, no glue needed. Just lightly wet the surface (with water) you are sticking to and lightly wet the glob of clay with water, then press the glob in and rub your finger over it. Dampen your finger with water too and use it to smooth the lumps.
Nice. Top info dude.
Is that ordinary white glue? Sorry if this is a dumb question
thank you! I've been using Das clay a lot and straight from the bag. I was no idea I should use glue to make it softer hhaha. Thank you so much :3
teach me your ways! as always i'm super impressed!
Great share mate
Where you buy green stuff rollers? What can I search for on ebay?
Lukes Aps oh cool ok
why not use a cheese grater to chop up the das before blending it with the pva.
Is pva its..a woode glue ?
Generally yes, if it is water based. Also, Elmer's Glue All and other school glues.
Interesting............
Thanks for the tip!!!!
paper mache clay can be made at home cheap as chips plenty of tutorials on you tube.
I thought DAS had to be baked after, am I wrong?
Thanks so much, I thought it was similar to sculpy
Hey, Das pretty good!
Forking hell Luke ! .....reminds me of the Pilsbury dough boy ! nice one ....I also use PVA to mould and shape plaster bandage....fred
Does your Das smell like curry powder? Mine does.
Is anyone anywhere making similar to greenstuff rollers suitable for n gauge projects, I found nowt?
cheers Luke
Hey Luke, you've allways great content. Only I get distracted by the ever bigger ear- gaps, asking myself when they, uhm, break...
I can't help...
Good job brother🇨🇦🇨🇦
some air drying clay (not daz) shrinks when drying and will crack. You need a paper based clay such a paper mache clay or daz
das is gud
Why not use a "POTATO Masher"?
Thanks!!!!
It is the best clay
funny the german "das" in like "der/die/das" are the equivalent to "the" in english, so the title looked like "the how to use...." video, (for me that is) xD

aaaaand i've just watched that review you did last year.. :) so yeh, it'll work with the poly board then.. happy happy joy joy!
title says you not your
just a heads up
Potato masher instead of fork.
A kilo for 3 quid! Hell, we pay the equivalent of 10 quid here!
For some reason this geezer reminds me of Jon snow
Its his voice
What the fuck is a green stuff roller? I am such a filthy casual at this hobby.
Lukes Aps I should have read that first. Sorry mate.
daz,,,,who says dass? and have you drawn on your eye brows they look really silly
