Actually, I read something in a library book once that said gerbils often spend more time exploring a maze than trying to complete it, hinting that they might have a sense of imagination and abstract thought, an insanely-rare and almost unheard of mental capacity outside of humans.
here's an experiment you should try instead. Make mazes that are small with a few dead ends but make a trail to the end using blue duck tape, train him to relize that the blue duct tape leads him to the exit to see if he has memorization ability, then once he enters the maze use the duct tape to lead him to a dead end to see if he just follows the tape or if he actually memorized the maze patterns.
I made one out of wood, so my gerbil couldn't eat the whole thing. My hamster took twenty minutes to get out. My gerbil took seventeen seconds. It really show the difference between the animals.
If you think about it, most rodents at least regarding mazes are smarter than humans in this situation. Used to breed them and have them as pets, gerbils are vastly underrated when it comes to smarts, had a few who literally learned to jump out of the tank, and one who could walk on the sides of it like a squirrel does on phone wires...pretty damn impressive. Never seen a hammy do that lol they're too dumb compared to Gerbils, Rats, Mice etc. Gerbils are also a lot more social and bond with you better than hamsters.
The Gerbil might of been originally looking for food instinctively in the first few attempts without knowing it was solving something. Until was more logical to just go for the food at the end.
That's not how scent works. It's pretty complicated, I agree the whole maze is covered in scent, but the 'right' way has more scent to it. If she realises it's the right way, she simply pees somewhere and she knows the way. xD
My gerbils love eating cardboard. They would probably eat there way out. This is a good indicator of animals minds developing just as much as humans do
According to psychologists, most things are "organized" best into memory when re-introduced after a night's sleep. Interesting how well that worked here!
I might make another video about the maze. I'll use a different gerbil next time and cover their scent trail after each try. Maybe that'll trick them. :) And yes, Salt is gone. :( May she rest in peace.
Very nice! A good motivation for gerbils by the way is play time in a large space with room to run and things to explore. They are not as motivated as other rodents like mice and rats for food reward.
Wasn't able to get any gerbils. I have 2 mice (girls) but since they're not males, I'm going to get one more. They really are the sweetest things. I love them. But still, sometime down the road(hopefully soon), I'll adopt a couple Gerbils. That's on my to do list. I'm addicted to cute things. Gerbils look like little squirrels, they're so cute!
Cool video. However, animals put in mazes don’t know they’re supposed to solve it ASAP. For them it’s just another fun place to explore in hopes of finding something interesting (food, burrow, another animal, whatever). I’d venture to guess she solves it faster each successive time because she’s already explored it and is bored - not necessarily just because she knows it better.
i hot glued the cardboard walls onto a larger cardboard sheet and waited until everything dried before i put the gerbils in. the glue wasn’t sticking out anywhere that the gerbils could have gotten to it and they surprisingly weren’t interested in chewing the maze much either
Im about to buy one tomorrow and I am so happy for once my mom allows a animal for the first time so my dad and me are going to pick the baby gerbils tomorrow Im so happy!!!
My sister made one of those when our gerbils were babies my gerbil cam second out of five also I have a gerbil that looks exactly like that called a Anakin (sister loves Star Wars) mines called Dexter
My gerbil first chewed the cardboard for 15 minutes, then fell asleep...
Miu 😂
Same 😅😂
Miu mine would do the same thing
Relatable

Wow
More likely they are just exploring and mapping it :p

That sounds hella fun lol
I'm getting a gerbil today; I've been watching these videos for a while.
Make sure you get 2

I watched this video soooo many times, I NEED A GERBIL.
You should try a new maze, and then the exact same maze with new materials. She now knows the way because of her scent (even after 24h). ;-)
That's not how scent works. It's pretty complicated, I agree the whole maze is covered in scent, but the 'right' way has more scent to it. If she realises it's the right way, she simply pees somewhere and she knows the way. xD
***** I'm talking to Viktoriya.
Haha, no problem. :-)
Me trying to finish Halo 2 as a kid
Thanks for showing me how cool gerbils are
I always used to do something like his but with old vhs tape boxes and rewarding them with treats for finding the right path
wow I should try that with my two gerbils up have a white one and a black one
My gerbils love eating cardboard. They would probably eat there way out. This is a good indicator of animals minds developing just as much as humans do
my gerbil would still be investigating the finish while yours finished the maze for the first time. :P
Brilliant! sooo funny to watch!
So cool! Really neat video!
I feel inspired to make a maze for my guinea pigs, now. :D
*****
Yeah, turns out that the big maze I had planned wasn't big enough... so I borrowed next door's mice. ^_^
Who else listened to the mission impossible theme song while watching this?
+Sean Thurmond Thanks for the suggestion. HILARIOUS!

i made one for my gerbils too when i was a kid, but they just sat there and chewed the walls lol
j'adore, i love your maze, nice idea

RIP Salt I didn't know you but I love your mother
That's so cool! I want to try something like that!!
Oh that maze is actually so cute, tempted to make one for my hamster! lol
Thank you for not using that Hamster Dance song
lol
so cute!
at the end she was really hungry lolol
awesome, loved it
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I need to get a glass because my hamster's first reaction was to jump the wall. Animals are smarter than we think.
Ayat78 Two words: Elephant Stampede.
OhLookIt'sAnUnexpectedChromebook Not a surprise. Rodents can chew through wood. Chewing through cardboard is child splay.
are gerbils good at solving puzzles like this? i know rats like to do so, but dont know if gerbils do
at 1:28 gerbil realizes everthing is horseshit and knows exactly where to go.
WOW SOOOOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-). my gerbils would just chew the cardboard. XD M
My gerbil just died so this is very calming for me now
Aww I'm sorry :'(
My gerbil would definitely try to jump the maze, she probably wouldn’t do the maze but she would find a different way out
Very nice! A good motivation for gerbils by the way is play time in a large space with room to run and things to explore. They are not as motivated as other rodents like mice and rats for food reward.
My Girbel would eat the walls of that maze!!
I really like the fast music for the fast part
my gerbil can't go that long without pooping
Brilliant!
Very impressive!
What do you use to edit with🤔
great experiment!
Awwww!! So cute!!!
Cute. I saw something like this on Fringe and wanted to see if people actually do that. They're so adorable. I want to get one some day.
You should get two, one by itself may get lonely. Gerbils live in clans in the wild so they're always happier with a buddy or two :)
Wasn't able to get any gerbils. I have 2 mice (girls) but since they're not males, I'm going to get one more.

Awesome video ! Like it !
Wow so talented
AWWWWWWWWWW ITS SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shouldn't the Gerbil just use Red or Yellow (ect.) to find the finish? Other trails end on other trails and 1 trail can end on the finish.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!
love the music, who is this?

I know the video is old af but what did you stick it down with?? Is glue safe?
i hot glued the cardboard walls onto a larger cardboard sheet and waited until everything dried before i put the gerbils in. the glue wasn’t sticking out anywhere that the gerbils could have gotten to it and they surprisingly weren’t interested in chewing the maze much either
What's the name of that tune and who's playing?
For a sec I thought I was watching food wishes.
What's the height of your maze?
My best guess is 3" :) that's the size I would make it, too
So cute :3
My hamster would look up at me and give me a death look if I put her in s maze
I guess you could say (puts on glasses) its a slow as windows explorer! YEAHHHHHH
sometimes i like to cover my body in vasaline and pretend im a slug.

Foxy Girl you should buy them in pairs of two
they only cost 10 dollars but including that for supplies for one gerbil almost 50 dollars
My gerbil would just chew up the walls

Wow so smart (:!
Awe. Very smart.
So cute
Consider washing the maze after each try. Otherwise, gerbils will navigate by smell.
AMAZING
Way cool!!
Ahh this is so cute but maybe next time out more air holes in
but then the gerbils will make the hole bigger and escape mission impossible style
ihanaa☺☺
ahaha love it ;)
