    At first glance it looks like it might be Stockholm syndrome but this actually is not. Belle never let go of who she was and never compromised her morals. The beast was the one who changed for her and fell in love with her rather than the other way around. The beast also realized what he was doing was wrong when you see him feel shame after his outburst that caused her to run away. You see his change when he said to Gaston "get out" quietly and calmly and not the crazy way he did before.

That’s what makes her my #1 favorite Disney Princess and her story with the Beast my #1 favorite Disney movie of all time. It's not Stockholm Syndrome, she left when he let her go and she even friendzoned him right after; she probably wouldn't have returned if he wasn't in danger, he was her friend, but she chose to love him romantically when he was already changed, willing to die. Anyway, great classic!

      When I took my fiance to see the movie, we were stuck sitting right in front of a mom with an 8-ish year old son and a 4-year-old girl and the girl screamed her head off the entire climax of the movie, from the moment Gaston hits the Beast with his arrow until after the credits started to roll. (The mother didn't want to leave her totally engrossed son alone in the theater, so she tried to get the squalling girl to stop.) And the girl didn't stop crying at the end of the movie because "Beast" was dead and gone and now there was this human guy there kissing Belle that she didn't connect with the Beast at all.

    It always confused me how the enchantress is not considered evil. I mean, she comes in disguise and wants a prince to just give her a room... Who would just let a stranger into their home, rose or no rose??? The prince might have been rude about it, but he had a right to turn her down. And when she doesnt get what she wants she not only transforms him into a beast, but also his servants. What did they do wrong to get the punishment to be ... things. And also, all people in that kingdom seem to have forgotten about them, so if someone's mother or husband or something was in the village at the time, they just forgot their loved ones. That's pretty messed up, I'd say. What she did was worse than him being rude.

    This is not Stockholm syndrome, even though it's always mistaken as such. Many days pass between when Belle becomes prisoner and the moment she realizes she loves him, also she doesn't even start to develop any sort of feelings (not even friendship or trust) until he does a nice thing for her (the Beast saves her life). From then on he shows he actually cares about her, starts letting down his guard and behaves like a gentleman even reaching the point when he realizes he needs to let her go. At the same time Belle is able to see the kind man behind the mask of the scary beast, but she doesn't fall in love with him until he sets her free. Then she's free and she has saved her father (one of her top priorities since the beginning): then and only then she goes back to the Beast to save him, because she cares about him and upon seing him again she realizes she is in love with him.
    Sorry if this comment is waaay too long, but I felt like I really needed to explain why Beauty and the Beast doesn't represent Stockholm syndrome. Have a nice day!

    You're hearing the genius of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman in the music. Ashman tragically passed away from HIV/AIDS before this movie was released. The last song he wrote was "A Whole New World" for Aladdin.
    If you look at the very end of the credits of Beauty and the Beast, you'll see a dedication to Ashman that always makes me tear up a little since these '90s Renaissance films had such a huge impact on me growing up (they're literally the reason why I'm an illustrator now in my late 30s). 8:25 you’re right, if you think about it a little the witch was actually really mean. She not only turned the pets and the staff into objects, but also the prince was only around 11 years old when he became the beast. The narrator states that the rose lasts until “[the prince’s] 21st year” (aka his 21st bday) and they’ve been like this for 10 years. So, the witch cursed a pre-teen boy and all his people for a decade because he… was mean about letting a homeless-looking old woman into his home 😅

    • @dbseamz
      @dbseamz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      However, human Chip is clearly younger than ten. Meaning either:
      Lumiere can't keep track of how many years have passed (not surprising with the weather all messed up near the castle--notice how it's always either snowy or rainy) and/or just said ten for dramatic effect
      Or, "his twenty-first year" meant his twenty-first year as the Beast, and no one in the castle would age while the castle was under the spell. The torn portrait that must have been painted before the prince became the Beast looks no younger than his human form after he changes back.

    • @tsukihimeyfan
      @tsukihimeyfan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@dbseamz hmm 🤔 now you’ve got me thinking. Even if Lumiere is exaggerating or mistaken, I don’t think he would go over double the time they’ve been cursed for, so at least 5 years must have passed. The wiki states Chip is 7yo, which means the beast would’ve been 14-16 years old when he was cursed, still a teen, probably not cool to curse him like that. If we assume the curse meant “21st year as a beast” instead, and no one has aged in that time, that would make the Beast… actually 42 years old?? (if he was “frozen” at 21 and it’s been 21 years) I don’t know if I like that, considering Belle is 17 😅

    • @dbseamz
      @dbseamz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tsukihimeyfanthe idea of “frozen ages” is always kind of strange, especially when there’s characters with non-frozen ages that they interact with. Under this theory, when the Beast turns human, he’s whatever age he was when he became a beast (let’s say 18-I’ve known high school seniors who look like him), but he’s had ten years of beast-hood as well as his first eighteen years of human life. Does that “count” towards his maturity? Does that make him the mind of a 28-year-old in the body of an 18-year-old? Or would it not because he really wasn’t maturing during that time?
      Of course, that means that the rose petals fell faster than the enchantress said they would, if we are assuming she meant 21 years as a beast. I do sort of have a theory for that, although I’m not sure how much sense it makes: when Belle first discovers the rose there are a lot of petals still on it and not many already fallen despite the time being half up (again, assuming Lumiere was right and ten years have passed). Petals start falling like crazy during her time with the Beast, which seems to span the length of a single winter (it’s autumn in the village when Maurice goes to the fair, then looks like early spring in the village when Gaston is rousing the mob). So my theory there is that Beast’s actions influence the petals; when he acts like a jerk toward Belle his time runs out faster because he’s acting against what he needs to do to break the spell. That’s how the rose is almost out of petals by the time he does change his ways and fall in love with her.

    • @tatsudragneel4761
      @tatsudragneel4761 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dbseamz It's because Beast was a living creature and the others were turned into objects, so he aged and the others didn't. The portrait is also very easily explained, many royals who became monarchs at young ages had portraits that made them look like they were adults. The original screenplay also mentions he was 11 when it happened, tho I wouldn't take that as confirmation since things change between screenplays but it does line up with what's said in the movie.
      This misunderstanding is why they made it overcomplicated in the live action remake. Everyone calls it a movie about Stockholm's syndrome but she had the chance to leave after just one day and she choose to stay. Not because she fell in love but because she could seen behind the imagine of him. And the beast for first time prioritized someone else because he fell in love.

    Belle is included because she saved the Beast and married him after he became a prince again.

    Great reaction! This was Disney’s first use of computer animation, the Little Mermaid being the last fully hand drawn movie. To this day nothing can beat the Disney Renaissance movies! The story takes place before the French Revolution and based on the art style it probably takes place in the 1700s. The only scene not in the original was the song human again. They intended to put it in but it was ultimately cut.
    You know you’re getting old when movies from your childhood are considered old! 😏😆

    As about the brooms: indeed, in Fantasia there is a segment (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) based on an old tale. It is about a boy who studied magic, but mostly helped his teacher with the household needs. One day the sorcerer went on a trip and told the boy to fill up a large barrel with water before he returned in the evening. The boy decided to make it easier for himself and brought the broom to life, having told it to bring water. But it appeared that he was unable to stop it when the barrel was full, and even chopping the broom in halves didn't work, because the halves turned into full-size brooms that went on bringing the water. This continued until the sorcerer returned and reversed the spell... Man. That is some moral without anybody getting killed

    Check out Doug Walker's Disneycember entry for Beauty and the Beast, as he does a pretty good job breaking down why the relationship COULD work.
    Main point is that A) She doesn't start respecting him until he mellows out. And B) It's pretty ambiguous as to just how much time is passing. Could easily have Been months, instead of the classic 3-Day romance.
    Edit to add: "Human Again" was a cut song that was re-added and animated for the special edition. It originally cut straight from "There May Be Something There" to Beast's baths scene.
    As for Gaston, there's a cut scene somewhere of him surviving the fall with a broken leg... only to be eaten by the wolves (rule of 3). This was instead used for Scar's fate in Lion King.... spoiler.

    She’s amazing.

    18:37 Want to make a minor correction in your list of movie horses- the horse in Never Ending Story was Artax; Atreyu was the boy who rode him lol
    25:46 Growing up I always thought the way the movie did Belle's reunion with Maurice made sense, but you bring up a good point with two alternate options- 1. Beast probably could have gone with her to rescue Maurice, if it didn't seem like he was confining himself to his castle and grounds; or 2. Belle probably could have brought Maurice back to the castle (which had become almost like a second home), she just figured she could take care of him better back at their house (though she could have had more help nursing him at the castle). This leaves the main reason why Belle rescued him alone and took him back to their house in the village was so that the Gaston subplot could catch up to her, making the climax happen.

    The music and the animation is always so impressive in this!! It's so inspiring how this was hand drawn! Also the Disney Princess thing, that is alike a title franchise thing. It isn't for every single Disney movie, but only a select few. It's a title given to the women in the Disney movies who either are already a princess (Moana, Rapunzel, etc), marry a prince (Belle, etc), or preformed a heroic deed (this is specifically for Mulan lol). There are a few other rules what classifies a "Disney Princess" but it is fun to learn about. Whatever hand drawn movie you wanna watch next I will be excited to see!

And it also blends better with the cgi. It is the only way I can imagine watching this movie. You should definitely do the 2D but you should also do the older films before the 90's. The radio single of the “Beauty and the Beast” song featured Peabo Bryson and Celine Dion. (She sounded kind of like Mariah in the early 90’s… so, close!!)
    ALSO. Disney turned this movie into a Broadway musical in 1994. I saw it in previews with the original cast and it was AWESOME. A lot of new songs were written for it - including a solo love-ballad for the Beast called “If I Can’t Love Her” that I am STILL obsessed with to this day! The point is mostly about someone who respects your vs someone who doesn't. Gaston never respects Belle, he doesn't even care for her, only for himself. The Beast kind of starts out the same way, caring more about lifting the spell than Belle herself, but he eventually puts her happiness over his own, hence eventually deserving love.
    On a side note, it is also about what makes a "beast". While the Beast becomes more and more human, Gaston becomes more and more beastly, but the REASON why Gaston changes this way is largely because society encourages him to act that way. Sadly Beauty and the Beast is still extremely topical.

    This was also I think the first main time they used CGI asking with handdrawn animation for the ballroom scene and it blew everyone's mind. Then they took it to another level with three flying carpet scene in Aladdin. It was such a big deal. I literally remember them showing that scene on my TV for the first time as a kind of behind the scenes thing because it was such a big thing.

    Answering a couple of questions you asked (not sure if anyone else has answered them yet): No, the Disneyland teacup ride was not inspired by this but by the tea party scene in Alice in Wonderland, and was one of the original rides when Disneyland opened. The movie's time period is eighteenth century, which is when Perrault recorded the original fairy tale. And the computer animation in the ballroom scene was pioneering stuff in 1991: nothing like it had ever been done in an animated movie before.

    Of the "classic" princess movies, Beauty and the Beast is my favorite.

    Interesting that you watched the version with Human Again, that was initially a deleted song so it went straight from Something There to the famous ballroom scene

    What's lovely about this movie and why it's so compelling is that one of the main people who made it was a closeted gay jewish man who not long after it was released died to aids
    It's why the mob song is so poignant because it's literally from experience

    The second movie is my favorite. It follows Belle and the Beast through how they fell in love. It was a magical winter movie when I was little and had a crush on beast
