Re NZ being missing from maps, I recall in Cold War days seeing a map with no NZ in the background of a Kremlin speaker. I was very pleased.

According to Māori oral traditions and archeological evidence some waka arrived much earlier than historians believed, some descend from the fairy tribes who used to occupy this land and others are remembered to have come on the backs of whales, stingrays, and the like.
You briefly touched on te tiriti o Waitangi but even before that was the he whakaputanga which was a Declaration of Independence written by the chiefs of he whakaminenga in 1835. 5 years later the British came to Russell in the bay of islands to establish an official presence for the empire and hastily write up a contract that would take away the sovereignty of not just the chiefs but the self determination of all Māori and our right to rule ourselves. The treaty established the rules for purchasing land from tribes with an official appointed by the queen, but the process of land acquisition was taking too long and costing too much for the queens liking so in response to growing hostilities between the crown and tribes from the spread of diseases, the raping of women and human trafficking, drug and alcohol trade, and the disregard for tapu, these compiled and in the 1860s war broke out in the north and spread like wildfire engulfing the whole country. To fund the war the crown confiscated Māori land. This was a breach in the afore mentioned tiriti o Waitangi. It is important to note that te tiriti o Waitangi and the treaty of Waitangi do not say the same things. This was untruthfully written in this way so that Māori would sign something they wouldn’t have, interestingly though almost all Māori signed the te reo Māori copy and according to international law the indigenous language version is the legal binding document. In te tiriti we cede kāwanatanga (a word translated from governance) in the treaty it says the chiefs cede their sovereignty to the queen as the sole sovereigns of their territory. But te tiriti says Māori retain our lands, our settlements and all our taonga or treasures
